Can You Increase Conversion Rate Like The Gurus?

Two years ago when I was starting to play around with internet marketing, I was pretty sure I could "earn millions and fire my boss" in weeks..... Just like everybody else, I bought that latest and greatest ebook or system or whatever it is and started to "sign up for adwords, buy a hosting service, bid on 1001 keywords and wait for money to come in". No mention of ANYTHING about conversion. Sounds familiar? If you are like me, you probably tried enough of those "guru" products to know what I am talking about. Did you make it big?

Everybody was talking about driving traffic and drive traffic I did. But you guessed it, just like every other ameteur, my conversion rate was poor and I couldn't even break even let alone "raking it in". In my opinion, conversion rate is everything in any kind of business. Better conversion = better profit. Better conversion = better ROI. Simple. Most important though, better conversion allows you to STAY in the game. Affiliates come and go and if you can't CONVERT, you are not here to stay.

Today, I have a decent conversion on my websites - average of 4%. Learn from my mistakes. So before you go out there and start learning on everthing and anything you can about eMarketing, really GET the basics of increasing conversion rate BEFORE everything else.

And THAT is what this lens is all about.

 

P.S. I am not posting a link to my website because it WILL be deemed inapproriate for most. It contains highly controversial materials. Conversion rate of 4% may sound low but it is actually the conversion for sales from ALL traffic sources, affiliates, blogs etc, who landed on my squeeze page and bought a product. Utilizing The Different Nature Of Traffic To Increase Conversion

Traffic generation seems to be the only subject people are talking about these days. What they didn't realize is that you need to treat different kind of traffic differently if you are concerned about increasing conversion. Most people don't even know there are different kinds of traffic. They send ALL of their traffic to a single page and hope for best! Is it a wonder conversion rate is at 0.5% or less?

Here's what you should do. I'm sure most of you advertise on adwords or any other kind of ppc. Not all keywords are of same value.

1. A product's model name or trademarked term often convert higher. In other words, they help you achieve your "increasing conversion" goal. People looking for these keywords have already decided what they wanted and are looking for the cheapest price or the best deal. If you have either of them, they are probably very easy to convert. Send these traffic straight to your sales page and squeeze them later! They are not interested in your "free report" or "review", they want to buy and you should make it easier of them.

2. General term such as "making money" probably isn't going to contribute to your "increase conversion rate" campaign. If you must bid on such terms, send them to your "free report" page where you can capture their email and promote your product later. Another way you can do is to send them to an article page with other ways to monetize them, maybe adsense or Adbrite... Be creative.

Generally, it is best to bid less on general terms and as much as possible on trademarked and highly targeted terms. For example, if you have 15 targeted keywords, bid on all of them but if you have 10,000 general term, bid only 10 or so more specific ones. Of course, this is only an example. Bid only if it is profitable. You get the point.

Higher conversion is always the goal, not more traffic. Traffic cost you money, conversion puts money into your pocket. Always focus on your goal.

Messing with the Mind To Boost Your Conversion

People like to think that they are in control of everything, especially their own mind, but the truth is they have hardly any control of anything - including their own mind. You see, most of the activities we do everyday is being done in our subconscious. The subconscious mind is much more powerful than your conscious mind. If you find someone unattractive, can you make yourself attracted to him/her? What you want to do then is motivate them to buy by speaking to the subconscious mind. Control their mind and increase your conversion rate!

Now, exactly how do I "speak to their subconscious mind"? There are a lot of ways but I'm going to just show you 2.

1. The 2 most powerful human motivators are fear of loss and desire for gain. When presenting an offer, be sure make them LIMITED. Limited quantity, limited time, bundle offers etc. SCARCITY is key in creating demand. People always want what they can't have. Look at the iphone and playstation 3. By limiting the number you can quadruple your price AND your conversion rate.

2. Engage buyer's emotion. The more emotion you engage, the more you will sell. Emotions are anger, happiness, sadness etc. To engage your buyer's emotion be sure to list your product's BENEFITS (not features) that will enable them to ACHIEVE or AVOID (motivators) the emotion they DESIRE. This is one of most utilized technique used by all great marketers to increase conversion.

Increasing Conversion - Lead Capturing Secrets You Wish You Knew 

A Whole New Conversion Game For You

Did you know capturing emails from your visitors AND buyers can increase conversion rate? While the latter's email addresses are much more valuable to the formers, it is still very important to capture both. Capturing leads open a whole new game for you. If you don't capture leads, your conversion is definitely MUCH lower than your competitors who does AND therefore your profits are most definitely also MUCH lower because you don't have a backend product.

That basically kicks you out of the game.

Now, when you do capture leads, make very sure your page is clean and simple. Make it short so that your visitor do not need to scroll down to the form. Nothing kills a visitor better thank dark, unattractive sites that look like the last "guru" site you visited. Put a picture/image near the form where you want capture email addresses to draw attention to it. That is very very important. Studies has shown people often browse through a page when it appears long. If they don't see anything that captures their attention at that time, they will just click the back button. Many people put pictures of pretty girls to capture attention. The ethnicity of that is for you to decide, but it does work. I will discuss more about attention grabbing copywriting in the next module.

So what now? I went through all those trouble capturing their email, what for? I don't want to name names here. (I will get sued if I do, and I'm just not in the mood to go to court)

1. Do NOT just send your precious subscribers from affiliate links to affiliate links like gurus. That isn't going to increase your conversion rate. Give them something of value. Teach them a free lesson. It doesn't have to be long. If you don't have anything to teach, you can email them when something new comes up in your site or something exciting you just discovered. (not a new affiliate stuff)

2. Do NOT include a lot links to different sites. "Click here to go x, or here to go y or here to go z". That looks plain unprofessional and spammy. Don't tell your life story in the email. People have another 107 emails they need read before they eat breakfast, do you think they will read your whole mail? Keep it short and to the point. If they are interested, they will click on your link where they then can read about your "life changing offer", or know more about what you have to say (maybe a blog).

The Single Easiest Way To Boost You Conversion

Remember I mentioned images can be used to grab attention and make readers focus on whichever part of your sales copy? Well, the headline is the only part of the page that rivals images for attention grabbing. Your headline is the single most important factor in your sales copy and so you probably know this already but....MAKE SURE YOUR HEADLINE IS INTERESTING. A dull headline and readers click the back button. My own testing showed that a story-like headline has the best conversion. A headline like "I use hire ridiculously expensive copywriters until...." actually out-convert a normal headline like "Copywriting Secrets that boost sales by 2836234%" by 57%. Notice the "..." at the end? Make sure you come up with a really good headline and leave it incomplete...

It tingles the readers curiosity and that gives you a higher chance the reader would continue to read your sales copy. Thus increasing your conversion rate.

In addition to a good headline, equally important is the color of the font you use for the headline. I know it sounds cheesy, but red is the best color to use. Attention grabbing = increase in conversion. Just make sure your background isn't red too.

This module will be short. I think the title says it all. Why do some people sell more and some sell less? Is it the bonus? Is it copywriting? There is so many factors influencing why some sell more and some sell less.

But I think the most important factor, of all factors is trust. If your potential customer trusts you, he/she is as good as sold! Try selling a health supplement to your parents. Is it difficult?

So why do people you are close to trusts you? Why not the many strangers you see on the street? How to get people to trust you?

Sure you can get seals of approval from authorities. Sure you can get testimonials. But the most important activity you must engage in everyday is communicate with your customer. Constant communication = equals more trust. Let them reach you too. Have a two way communication. This is a very important reason why people with a list converts much higher than someone who don't! A list lets you communicate with people frequently. You communicate frequently with people close to you. You communicate frequently with people you trust. This is important.

Other than a list, participate in your forum, reply to emails etc. It builds trust. And once your name is ingrained into people's brains, they can never forget you! Every time they hear something about "health supplement", they think of you! They approach you first!

If you haven't do so, start capturing names and email addresses using Aweber. Aweber is best autoresponder ever. Period. It will boost your conversion rate to where you never thought possible.

You have seen it, I have seen it. Pages after thousands of pages of website so cluttered, it just makes people want to leave. It is very important for you that a customer STAYS when they arrive at your site. The reasons are 1) every click may cost you money. 2) it decreases your conversion rate when customers leave without buying. Therefore 3) more expense + less conversion = less profit / more loss. Simple.

Therefore what you want to do is to focus all your resources on one particular goal you want a web page to do. A lead capture page should only capture leads. No adsense, no affiliate links, no nothing except for your short form and your short story. Maybe a small little image. Devote spaces on your webpage only when it will increase conversion rate of whatever that page is meant to do.

By focusing your attention into one goal per web page, you immediately tell the potential customer what is the purpose of that page is. You immediately tell them what they can find on your web page. Most importantly, you show them exactly where to click to get more detailed information.

That is very powerful. If your customer do not know what they are looking at, there is a very high chance he/she will leave without ever turning back. Well, I wouldn't call it exploiting. Let's call it... "make use of". Everyone wants to be a part of something bigger. A group, a club, a COMMUNITY. It's a basic need! When you create a community, people can pro-actively participate in whatever you have to offer. They can vote, comment, enter contest blah blah. People feel important and they come to trust you. When they trust you, they listen to you when you recommend something. That's exactly how Squidoo take off so fast! Squidoo has a very vibrant community. The founder of Squidoo, Seth Godin obviously wants you to do the same. That's why you can add plexos, poll module, guestbook. These are perfect ways to improve conversion!

Ok, that's all good, but what if I'm new and people just plain don't trust me? The most important thing to do when you create a website, especially a commercial site, is to include an "about me" page. This page alone has been shown to increase conversion by 40%. This page shows your potential customers who you are and that you are a legitimate business. Include a picture of yourself, if you have staff include them. Include also a brief history of your business, if you have a business registration number, include them. There's obviously much more to the "about me" page. Browse a few website and look at their "about me or us" page to get a better idea.

What if my visitors are really suspicious of everything? I want to say forget about them, but if you are asking this question obviously you are either pretty desperate or greedy. (Who isn't?) To get more people to trust you, get a "seal of authority" from well.... the authorities. BBB (better business bureau), verisign, hacker-safe and etc. Simple and easy. Bad news is, you have to pay for these services. I see many sites without it and still did well. So if you don't have enough resources to get one of these seal, don't get it.

Increase Conversion Through Lesser Barrier 

This one will be short. Create less barrier for your customer. Don't make them register before they can buy. Don't make them go other pages just to purchase or look for more information. The lesser clicks they need to purchase, the higher chance they will buy. That will increase your conversion further.

Better Conversion Through Positioning 

People listen to you when you are an expert. If your construction worker came and teach you how to make millions online, would you believe him? But what if he teach you how to build your table?

But I'm no expert! Being an expert is not that difficult. For you to be an expert, you just SAY you are an expert. No degree, doctorate, not even a diploma needed. Appear as an expert. Then get someone, anyone, to say you are an expert. It can be your brother, your parents, your girlfriend, whoever. This is important. Your customers will eventually follow the chorus and say you are an expert...... IF your product is worthy of that title.

Make very sure that you do not abuse this. Do not lie about being an expert. It will only kill your reputation. Believe me, you do not want to try it.

Increase Conversions By Utilizing Your "Thank You" Page 

When someone just paid you for a product or service, that shows they trust you. A trusting person is the easiest to convert. Don't just display a "thank you for you purchase" note and "click here for your download".

This is the time to promote your other services or affiliate products you have! They convert much higher than new customers. Promote products and services that compliment the product you have just sold.

For example, if you sold an adwords guide, you might want to promote a keyword research tool.

To crank it up a notch, offer a discount in your thank you page BUT also set a limit to it!
