one golf teacher told me to "lead with my legs" instead of just using arms. That helps me (when I can actually do it)

Think about your swing and technique during practice on the range. When on the course, just play golf - do not play golf swing, which makes you tight. Try to relax and focus on the challenge of scoring low. I know it can be difficult when things are not going right, but it helps to free up your swing.

You hit the nail on the head. Being relaxed and using the core muscles is key to long drives. Author of "Triangulate Your Gold Swing."

The arms and hands must be easy and loose. When you tighten the hands and arms the muscles tighten, tight muscles are slow muscles. The arms follow the turn of the torso and the torso follows the hips. The hips turn to the target before the backswing is completed. In other words the sequence is hips, torso and then arms. The wrists hold the angle (lag) and are the last segment to fire at impact. The Golf Pilates exercise "Arm Floats" is a great one to teach the arms to be "easy"in the downswing.
