Ok, so let's get this straight. To increase website traffic for free there are two steps you MUST follow. This will take some time and some effort but HONESTLY it's easy when you know how.

The first step is to work on the SEO of your website. Ok, ok, so you know that already. The big question is HOW. We'll come to that in just a minute. I'll give you all you need to know.

The big problem for most website owners is that despite all the effort put into SEO for their site they are completely unaware of the crucial second step.

What is this crucial second step? Surely the SEO strength of your website is the only important thing?

In a word BACKLINKS.

Now, even if you have heard about backlinks you may not really know why they are important. If you do, then your WAY AHEAD of most people. Backlinks are the double whammy to increase your website traffic.

Ok, this is all very well, but how do you build these two steps? Stick with me here and we will unleash floods of free website traffic to your site.

The first step to increase website traffic is to start with your website itself. The stronger the foundations of your website the more attractive your website will be in organic SEO terms.

The foundations of your website must be built on targeted keywords.

What do I mean by targeted keywords?

These are words and phrases that people search for on the search engines to find information on your website. If you own a website dedicated to golf then golfing fanatics will be searching the web using phrases such as "golf", "improve golf swing" and "golf clubs".

This is where it gets really exciting, there are free websites out there that not only tell you what phrases people are searching for, they also tell you how many times PER DAY people search for them.

Do a search for the phrase "free keyword tool" and use sites such as Wordtracker and Google's own keyword tool.

Today when I did a search for "golf" I got these daily search results:

Golf searched for 3745 times
Improve Golf Swing searched for 2251 times
Golf Clubs searched for 1418 times

Think about that. If your website had organic SEO for these three phrases alone you could, in theory, be receiving about 7500 visitors to your website PER DAY!!

Now how about that for improving your website traffic ?!!

Go and do it now! Go and get a list of your targeted keywords.

A word of warning first..... The high search keywords will probably have alot of competition out there. There will be lots of sites which are optimised for these keywords and you will struggle to compete.

Instead go for long tail keywords. These are keyword phrases which are much more specific and have much fewer searches per day.

What, fewer searches? What's the point of that?

Well, there will be less competition for that phrase so you are more likely to rank highly for that phrase. Would you rather have all 374 searches for "how to play golf" rather than a couple of searches from 3745 searches for "golf". Of course you would!

Make a search for these phrases in quotation marks "" and see which ones have fewer results.

Time to improve your website SEO for a constant stream of free website traffic.

Take your selected keyword phrases and pick just one first. You are going to create a webpage based around this one phrase.

The best way is to provide a whole webpage dedicated to information based around that one phrase. So, "improve your golf swing" would become an article about "7 Ways To Improve Your Golf Swing".

Use the phrase in the title as I just have. Then start your article with that phrase. Write about 400 to 700 words about this and include the phrase 3 to 5 times throughout the article at regular points.

Important. Do not be tempted to just repeat the phrase over and over again and 1000 times. The search engines do not like this. They also don't like it if the article does not make any real sense and it's just an excuse to put the phrase in lots of times. Trust me, they may use machines, but they can tell if your article makes any sense or not!

Final touches. Put the keyword phrase in the URL of your webpage.

Example www.YourDomainName.com/improveyourgolfswing

There are things you can put in the HTML code to add to this, but let's stick to basics for now.

Load your webpage up and the search engines will come and have a look at it and find these keywords phrases. Bear in mind this may take several weeks sometimes. You can speed it up by 'pinging' your webpage, which is telling the engines to come and look at your webpage. Try free services like pingomatic.

Rinse and repeat this with several keyword phrases. The more of these you have based around your chosen subject, the stronger it becomes. The effect here is of taking 2 + 2 and making 5.

Once these pages start being crawled by the search engines you will start seeing traffic coming to your website for free. This traffic will then continue without you having to lift a finger. It will be unstoppable!

WAIT!! Most people will stop here, telling you that's all you need to do.

This is only HALF the story.

BACKLINKS.

If you're like me, it's sometimes difficult to get the enthusiasm to put in the effort to achieve success online and far too easy to think that it's never going to work and just give up.

These are understandable negative thought patterns which hold you back and lead you to read emails and surf the web instead of building up your website and getting out there to drive traffic to your site.

By developing a positive thinking habit you will find you become much more productive and your successes will spur you on to more positive habits.

So what's all this about Backlinks ?

Think of it this way. You could spend all your time shouting about how great your website is and why people should come and visit it. How many people do you know will react favourably to that sort of 'sales' tactic? Not many.

What if you had a whole lot of other people shouting about how great your website is? This is better because it's now someone else saying that your website is good. This looks less like a sales tactic and more of a recommendation.

Now. What if you had a whole lot of people telling their FRIENDS that your website is good? That's MUCH better. People trust their friends and if they recommend your website then it MUST be good.

Search engines see it the same way.

If they see links to your website all over the internet, they see these as recommendations for your website and therefore give it improved ranking. If you can get these links on websites which have the same sort of keyword phrases as yours and on websites that already have a high standing in the search rankings you've hit the WEBSITE TRAFFIC JACKPOT !!

So, how do you get those backlinks. Well, here's the truth. If you want them for free, it's going to take some effort on your part. I'm not saying it's difficult. Actually it's really quite easy. It just takes time. Keep at it. It's worth it.

4. Forum posting and signatures
5. Answering questions
