Are You Establishing an Online Reputation?

All of us as lensmasters are looking for ways to increase our Squidoo traffic. One way that we can increase our traffic to our Squidoo lenses, home websites, and blogs is to write articles about our Squidoo topics on other article writing sites. While the articles on those sites may not always directly feed to our lenses, the links in our signatures and profiles will. Each website has a core group of followers that will learn about us, our topics, and our writing and begin to follow our work.

At the same time, we can increase our clout and online reputation as we write more highly regarded articles on different websites. If we consistently right quality articles and lenses, more and more people will want to follow us.

Lastly, we can write complementary articles on other sites that increase our reputation as an expert on that topic. By showing our expertise in various forums, we broaden our fan base.

The best part of all of this is that we can earn money from our articles on each site simultaneously.

Pictured above left:

Speedball No. 5 Artists' Set

Writing Complementary Articles

What do I mean about writing complementary articles?

Let us say that your topic of choice is "how to have a career as an artist in the United States." You can choose three or four article sites including Squidoo to write related articles on your topic. When I say "related articles," I do not mean writing the same article with different words. That is spam. What I am saying is to write three or four distinctly different articles talking about different parts of your main topic.

For example, here are four article titles on related topics:
Can artists make a living in the US?
Full time careers for artists are tough to come by.
U.S. artists as entrepreneurs
How I live as an artist daily

These are four separate article titles which can generate related articles that would be of interest to the same target audience, but would show more than one side to the subject. You can drive traffic from one article to the other by adding in links either in your signature or the article itself depending on the article site's rules.

These distinctive, soft-bound books look and feel handmade. Each book contains 150 natural paper sheets and is surprisingly lightweight. The heavy paper cover has a leather-like texture on both sides, plus inner pockets at the front and back. An attached black elastic band runs lengthwise to keep the book securely closed. Signature binding keeps the sheets secure despite constant flexing. Handmade in Nepal.

Like Squidoo, Many Article Sites are Free to Use and Give You Another Stream of Income

A writer or business person can never have enough streams of income. By building an article base in each site, you will increase and strengthen your stream of income from that site. Many article writing sites, including Squidoo, allow you to increase your income by inviting others to that site as referrals. Each site does this a little differently, but in essence you can add to your income stream through your referrals as well as your own work.

Since web traffic naturally ebbs and flows, each site will go up and down in traffic but often at different times, so that your income becomes steadier as you add more income streams.

On Writing Well, 30th Anniversary Edition: The Classic Guide to Writing Nonfiction

Whether you write an occasional professional letter or a daily newspaper column, William Zinsser's On Writing Well should be required reading. Simplicity is Zinsser's mantra: he preaches a stripped-down writing style, strong and clear. He has no patience for excess (most use of adjectives and adverbs, he writes, just adds clutter) or tired phraseology (for instance, he'd like to outlaw all leads involving those "future archaeologists" most often found "stumbl[ing] upon the remains of our civilization"). He recommends that all writers of nonfiction read their work aloud (don't commit something to paper that you wouldn't actually say) and write under the assumption that "the reader knows nothing" (not to be confused with assuming the reader's an idiot). In addition to the chapters on the expected--usage, audience, interviews, leads--Zinsser also focuses on such trouble spots as science and technical writing, business writing, sports, and humor.

Take Turns Writing on One Site or Another

It is a good idea to spread yourself around a bit, and take turns writing on the various article sites in an organized fashion. You can even take shorter articles that you have written on straight article sites, and rework them or expand them to create your Squidoo lenses.

Suggested Article Site: Hubpages

Hubpages is a site somewhat similar to Squidoo in that the hubs (articles) are built of capsules (modules). Hubpages also allows you to sell items related to your topics on your hubs although you have to have your own account with Amazon, Ebay, and Adsense.

As a site, Hubpages has a very different feel that Squidoo, and therefore lends itself to different kinds of articles and subject matter. The rules on Hubpages are different than Squidoo so before you use the site make sure that you read the terms of service.

One of the things that makes Hubpages different is that they seem to want more straight article or content writing vs. different kinds of modules. So if you like to write straight informational articles, this would be a good site for you. If you are completely comfortable with Squidoo, allow yourself enough time to get used to Hubpages before you decide whether you like the site or not.

Bird by Bird: Some Instructions on Writing and Life

Think you've got a book inside of you? Anne Lamott isn't afraid to help you let it out. She'll help you find your passion and your voice, beginning from the first really crummy draft to the peculiar letdown of publication. Readers will be reminded of the energizing books of writer Natalie Goldberg and will be seduced by Lamott's witty take on the reality of a writer's life, which has little to do with literary parties and a lot to do with jealousy, writer's block and going for broke with each paragraph. Marvelously wise and best of all, great reading.

Bird by Bird: Some Instructions on Writing and Life

Amazon Price: $10.20 (as of 12/28/2009)Buy Now

From Publishers Weekly
Lamott's miscellany of guidance and reflection should appeal to writers struggling with demons large and slight. Among the pearls she offers is to start small, as their father once advised her 10-year-old brother, who was agonizing over a book report on birds: "Just take it bird by bird." Lamott's suggestion on the craft of fiction is down-to-earth: worry about the characters, not the plot. But she's even better on psychological questions. She has learned that writing is more rewarding than publication, but that even writing's rewards may not lead to contentment. As a former "Leona Helmsley of jealousy," she's come to will herself past pettiness and to fight writer's block by living "as if I am dying." She counsels writers to form support groups and wisely observes that, even if your audience is small, "to have written your version is an honorable thing."

Suggested Article Site: Associated Content

Associated Content is a well established article and content site that is a great place to network with other writers. You can write articles about whatever you wish or choose topics that Associated Content lists.

Associated Content will pay you for your original articles with upfront payments of $1 to $20. Articles get judged by real people so it takes a couple of days for them to be approved. They need to be totally original and at least 400 words. You can also earn money for the same articles with page views (called performance payments).

Do You Write Better Directly on a Computer or With a Pen and Paper?

Computer

AddaptAbilities says:

In some ways I prefer the feel of pen and paper, but my motor dysgraphia makes that impossible. I have to type.

ElizabethJeanAllen says:

I'm a faster typer than writer and I when the ideas come I can't write fast enough.

italianheart92 says:

Computer...its easier too

Plume says:

techmom says:

Computer for me - I also can't read my handwriting and I type much faster than I can write.

Adrienne says:

Often times computer but if I'm on the metro pen and paper. Depends on my mood.

jaye3000 says:

I think it's more formal on computer. In a letter or something, a lot more of my personality comes out- you never know who I could offend ;)

Ron Rink says:

Can't read my handwriting any more -- arthritis has put an end to that -- so it's all computer writing for me from now on.

luvmyludwig says:

I like to use the computer most of the time. I like using a pen and paper to journal, but my hands get tired easier when I write than when I type.

roysumit says:

I prefer computer although Pen and Paper are also useful at
times.

Pen and Paper

j_barnhart4 says:

I prefer to write down my notes on paper first and then draft it on the computer later. It's easier to get the order straight and change things that way.

aj2008 says:

I do both, but sometimes if I get a block then I leave the PC, pick up a nice pen and note things down the old fashioned way. It usually frees up my thinking. Perhaps, because I do not touch type and have to keep my eye on the keyboard as I type, when I am using pen & paper I can see what I am writing as I write it?

If it was not for the fact that I would have to type up anything I write with a pen afterwards, I may do more the "old fashioned" way! I certainly often feel more creative with a pen in my hand and I love the feel of writing on good quality paper.

boshemia says:

Both, if I am writing fiction or any other free-form type of writing I prefer to write longhand, then transfer to computer to edit. It keeps me from over editing until I am finished. If I am writing Squidoo lenses or about info I already have a grasp on I write on the computer.

WendyKrick says:

Both. I prefer to write with the computer, however I keep a notebook with me and jot down thoughts when they come to me otherwise they will often excape me. I find my best thoughts and ideas come to me during dreams and during meditation. So I keep a dream journal and I keep a notebook near so I can write after meditation.

I prefer pen and paper...

Suggested Article Site: Helium

Helium is somewhat similar to Associated Content, but I think it is a little less confusing to navigate. On Helium, there are lists of titles to write about, or you can suggest a title and if it is approved, write about it. It takes about a day to get a title approved.

Once again, Helium is looking for original content that is at least 400 words. There are a few exceptions to this in the Creative Writing and Recipe section. Helium pays a minimum of $.50 per article except for a few exceptions, and also pays a $1.00 bonus for any empty title you fill. The easiest way to do this is by submitting a title, then writing the first article for that title. On top of these payments, you can earn money for page views.

You do need to rate articles in order to get paid, but no more than 100 rates within 90 days. Another way to earn money is through inviting other authors to Helium, but you have to send them an email directly to invite them. When your invitees start to write articles, you can earn five percent of their article earnings. If anyone is interested in this site and is not already a member, I would be happy to send you an invitation.

Moleskine Large Plain Notebook

Review
I became interested in the Moleskines from reading (all of) Bruce Chatwin's books. I use the small Cahiers (pocket notes, ever-ready for jotting and aide de memoire for everything); the large, plain notebooks - the perfect journal, cannot be beaten; and the extra-large, square-ruled Cahiers for working on guitar designs, design ideas, construction ideas, floor plans, mechanism sketches, etc., etc.: they are my design journals.

This large notebook opens flat, the binding doesn't break, the covers are tough without being too heavy (for carrying), the elastic closure and page marker are very handy, especially the elastic. The weight of the paper is nice and its quality is wonderful: absolutely uniform. The pages feel good in your hand; writing on them is smooth and even - effortless. The size is just right, enough pages but still very compact. (The cahiers are perfect for your pocket.) Very tough and well-made. Just a joy to use. The Moleskines are a bit more expensive than cheaper options; but they are well worth it -- for anything that you intend to retain for a long time (why else write a journal?)

The feel, the sense of perfection, the knowledge of picking up and using the PERFECT TOOL for the job are intangibles that quietly enrich life. (Not to mention the feeling of touching history.) It's like the the perfect chef's knife in the kitchen or a perfectly-balanced razor-sharp chisel effortlessly peeling away wood. They are beautifully, simply elegant in their perfection.

Suggested Article Site: Bukisa

Bukisa is a new site that is still in beta. It is another site where you can write articles on any topic, and on this site you are paid on page views and page views of your referrals. Bukisa still has a lot of kinks to be worked out, but it is another place to write articles that will link directly to your other articles or lenses. On Bukisa, you can add the links directly into your articles.

What Do You Have to Gain?

Most article writing sites are absolutely free to use, and the only thing it costs you is a little sweat equity. You certainly have nothing to lose but some time, and a lot to gain. If you are serious about gaining a reputation and traffic to your various sites, including Squidoo, then the more paths you can set up leading to your sites the better off you are. Even better if you can set up pathways that will attract targeted traffic to your lenses.

Targeted traffic is traffic that is already interested in your topic, and therefore primed to be interested in your lens. They are the most likely to buy an item from your lens, read it all the way through, click on links to your other lenses or articles on the same topic. All of these activities are what earn you income. These are the best readers to attract to your lenses, and as your online reputation grows, you will continue to attract more and more of this type of reader.

Online Markets for Writers: How to Make Money by Selling Your Writing On the Internet

In 1993, Anthony and Paul Tedesco published one of the first 'zines on the Web--the Trincoll Journal (HotWired was the other). Now, a mere seven years later, the Tedesco brothers have produced the "first-ever database of pay-and-policy information for more than 200 paying online markets." Whew--we've come a long way, fast. The Tedescos' Online Markets for Writers is an indispensable resource for anyone wanting to write for the Web, not to mention anyone wondering how to recycle all those yellowing clips. While some of the book's listings are more thorough than others, all include basic contact information, and most describe a given publication's editorial needs. The best listings offer pointers from editors, as well as inside scoop from contributors (it would be nice if there were more of the latter). Duly armed, you'll know what you're up against when you submit to Epicurious ("We have never accepted an unsolicited submission"), Family.com ("It will be a rare exception if we respond at all"), or Business Week Online ("Not worth all the aggravation," says one writer).

Accompanying the listings are hints on writing for the Internet (make it short and personal, and provide links); profiles of Internet writers and editors; a sample Internet writing contract; the contract the National Writers Union would like to see used; and the Tedescos' 10 favorite places to be published online. At book's end, online writers and editors divulge their favorite Web sites--as if we needed more excuses to procrastinate.

The problem with all this burgeoning technology, I hear you thinking, is that so much of it is fleeting. By the time a book like this is released, half the data is obsolete. Perhaps. But the Tedescos are one step ahead of you. They plan to update the book via a free e-mail newsletter. --Jane Steinberg

The bottom line is, this book should be on the shelf of every writer who writes or wants to write for an online publication. It gives you hundreds of places to go, tells you what the editors are looking for, and shows you what to do and what not to do in clear quick easy-to-understand language. It's the book to get, period: I did, and believe me, it's worth every cent.

Excellent list of resources and ideas for article marketing. I think Ezinearticles.com is well worth exploring further. It often ranks on the first page of Google results for searches I do. I have 40 articles with them now. It has superb training resources which are free. It's a bit slow to get started - you have to wait a while to get published (it's the largest article directory). However, once you have published 10 articles with them you are deemed an expert author with a guarantee publication time of within 48 hours - not a bad time limit to land on page 1 of Google.
