The MLM You Know...How to Beat Prospects into Submission and Burn Out in the Process

 

I'm gonna jump right with both feet and lead off by saying "network marketing works".  My basis?  Well...let's just suffice to say that every legit MLM of note has distributors making US$ six-figure incomes.  And plenty of MLM heavy hitters have accumulated earnings reaching $10, $20 million and more.

If you want to argue about that part then there's little point in going further down this page.

Let's go straight to the chase and identify the #1 problem with MLM...or should we call it "challenge"?

Let me guess, ok?  How about?...Sure, some people seem to be able to do it.  But you?  Well, you've been beating your head against the wall trying to find new recruits and customers.

Welcome to the team, cause that is the issue that's been plaguing network marketing since Adam was a boy.

And the approach doesn't matter...friends and relatives, 3-foot rule, purchased leads.  They all turn out the same for the majority, because you are chasing people that are not qualified, not serious and just not interested. 

If you're getting stressed just thinking about the process, then you know what I mean.  Take a few deep breaths and think about something pleasant for a moment.  Are you ok now?  Good, now let's look at the flipside.

There are 300 million people in the US and 6 billion in the world.  And, somewhere amongst all that humanity, there are competent individuals that are open, looking and eager to take action on an opportunity...if and when they become comfortable.  Is that a fair statement?

So, how about if we learn to attract these eager prospects rather than chase the hopeless causes?

Ok, so we said 6 billion people on the planet. With that in mind, where's the one place to find the most of them? Well, it's not North America, not Europe and not even China or India. But you already knew ...it's the Internet. 2 billion people online.

If you're not a techie, the goods news is the Internet is no longer just a hi-tech craze or even a media trend: it's become a social phenomenon.

And social interactivity is changing everything. Social networking media is getting people's attention in a big way. The term is Web 2.0...where visitors are encouraged to join in, have conversations and to be part of the community.

If you and I were sitting together right now, I'd ask you how familiar you are with YouTube, FaceBook, MySpace and other social media sites. Well, you're on Squidoo now so you're probably a leg up on most.

These days, almost everything that's exciting online is some form of social media. From blogs to social networking sites to social bookmarking, the world is forming communities and sharing their opinions, their messages and their emotions.

So, a marketer's instinctive reaction might be "Attack!!...Web 2.0 here we come"

Well, let's throw a monkey wrench into the works. Maybe a marketer's biggest challenge in today's world of info-overload.

In order to do business, you must first convince your prospects to give you their attention. But attention - yours, mine and the rest of the world's - is becoming increasingly hard to come by. Because...faced with a bombardment of ads and offers and spam coming out the wazoo, all of us have become very selective about who and what we pay attention to. And the net effect is a radically changed competitive landscape when it comes to attention grabbing.

In other words...prospects don't like marketers. They don't trust marketers. And when you send the message that you're a marketer, they don't like or trust you. They're not going to search for your website, click your ads or respond to your emails...and Web 2.0 is exactly the same.

So, when you intrude on a Web 2.0 community with hypey sales copy and a me-too product, you're crashing a party you weren't invited to... and you're going to get thrown out on your ear.

Believe you me, doing business via social media is not a matter of knocking your prospect out with your message and dragging them back to your cave. It's about being a part of the community, bonding, establishing credibility and a position of authority. So, when you talk; they listen.

Let's call that part My Story Marketing. Most network marketers were taught to tell their story from day 1. Similar concept, only now we use Web 2.0 media to leverage our efforts and thereby reach some of the largest audiences on the planet.

And when our message strikes a cord, an eager prospect will start the investigation process by following our Web 2.0 trail. And, If that person is the right person, at some stage, they will become comfortable and respond to our call to action.

I don't think you'll find many MLMer's prospecting that way.
