Lullabies and Training The Mind
In some of my worst moments of loving someone with an addiction, I would lock the door to my bedroom and put on my Shaina Noll tapes. I had heard of Shaina Noll from my women's group, In those days, I did not know about the healing power of song from a physiological perspective. I just knew it worked to take me away from the pain of the life of what I call "Second Hand Addiction" (see link above)My life in those days was a madhouse, roller coaster of conflicting emotions and powerlessness, with no ability to get off the ride.
My favorite of Shaina's tapes called SONGS FOR THE INNER CHILD, and you can hear about it at http://www.shainanoll.com/ The tape was of lullabies, soft and sweet and comforting. When I heard them- laying on the bed with a comforting blanket- I would revert back to the state of being a little girl. I was being hugged, loved, comforted. Soon those songs would take me out of that personal hell place that I lived in and bring me back to a place of love.
We often forget the power of music to affect the human brain in a positive or negative direction. It is an important thing to remember- the brain being comprised of electrical circuits and impulses, and musical vibrations being converted to electrical impulse in the brain. So there is a strong connection. If you have never seen it, it is fascinating to watch a video of music's affect on the cells of the human body- realigning them and literally changing their physical shape.
After this lullaby realignment, I could then go back the real world, able to function. The music had worked its magic on the very cells in my body- in much the same way that mind entrainment works.
Later, when I was escaping that life, I would sing those same lullabies to my children. In this way I passed on the peace and healing in their life of turmoil with a disintegrating family. Once I even sang the Shaina Noll songs to a group of adults at a retreat. To sing them as a singer had become even more healing than to listen- if that was possible.
Today, as a budding teenager, my son still asks me to sing him a Shaina Noll lullaby once in a while. The one he loves is called You can be Anybody That You Want to Be, and it sets the tone for him to have a great life.
Because to tell the truth, lullabies should not only be for children.Or perhaps they should always be for a child- the child within us all.

Training The Mind with "Easy Does It"
If you've ever been to a 12-step meeting dealing with your own or someone else's addiction you will hear the slogan "Easy Does It. Just three small words, but very powerful- especially if you can train your mind to remember to use them in the right context. I remember sitting in meetings, hearing people talk about "Easy Does It." I remember making note of how people were able to make use of the slogan when the chaos of their mind became overwhelming. For a person who was then addicted to "mind changing mood altering men," hearing these victories over self was inspiring. At the time I too began using the slogan 'Easy does it." I would bring it to mind when I was overwhelmed. I would think it or say "easy does it" with a nice deep breath. Then I would get back to the one small thing that I was doing- willing my mind to think of nothing else. People often call this 'being in the present,' and Eckart Tolle calls it "Living in the Now." The more I did this, the more my life began to shift and change.
So make a practice of saying Easy does it, coming back to the present, and training your mind to live in the Now. Do it over time and see what this one small step does for your world and your life.

So let us take a better look at Jesus, since he was our role model as Christians. Jesus said that we, like him, are sons of GOD, and children of GOD. With this in mind, consider that Jesus was not teaching people that HE was special, and made in the image of and likeness God (which he was, of course)... but rather that we ALL are special, and made in the likeness of GOD. Consider that Jesus was saying that there is God in each of us. Now if that is true it follows that if Jesus can perform miracles, walk on water, feed the masses, etc, so can we all.
You Can Increase Mental Power by Training Your Mind
Or does increasing mental power happen some other way?
Well Ekhart Tolle and some of the great minds of our time would say that obsessive thinking was exactly the opposite of what it takes for the mind to perform at ts optimum. Mr. Tolle calls compulsive thinking a 'disease.' And what many people of our enlightened times are beginning to see is that what we actually need to do is slow the mind down- and have it be still and quiet. And from this stillness, genius can arise.

Some might equate the mind to an out-of-control computer that refuses to turn off, but churns away at some problem you never put in. This computer never solves the problem. It just churns. And many of us have known this to be true in our lives, especially in times of great tribulation. We try to stop thinking about a problem, but we can't. We run, jog, put on the TV, go to a movie, take a hot bath, and finally maybe even pop a sleeping pill in desperation. But through it all our mind churns away- and never reaches any solution. The mind, simply put, has a 'mind of its own.'

It is at times like this that we can feel that we have an enemy in our camp, and it is our very own brain. This is especially true since the mind loves to tell us disparaging and discouraging things about ourselves- thinking, I suppose, that this will help to solve the problem.
So in order to increase mental power, what we actually need to do is train the mind. The mind needs to be trained that it turns on or off at our control, and focuses on the subjects that we desire at any given time- instead of following its own agenda. Which is easier said than done.
However I can tell you truly from my heart that this feat can be accomplished. To give an example, in my life now I am facing a whole host of crises at the same time. I am shifting careers, looking for work, losing my elderly father, and experiencing the regeneration of my old back injury. Most people would call this a recipe for insanity and a good reason to go to bed and not get up again for a while. But I have been very busy training my mind, and so I am living a stable, peaceful, and even quite happy life- despite it all. I have feelings and thoughts, and they come and go, but they do not dominate me.
There are many methods I have used to train my mind. Today for instance I focused on what could be done while lying down. This included a brain entrainment CD, a hypnosis CD, and a meditation CD, as well as some soft music. Later I took a walk in nature and kept calling myself to be present to the quiet. And when my mind jumped in with my cares and woes, I thanked it for sharing, and politely declined to continue the thoughts. In general, I try to be gentle with my mind. I know that my mind really believes, in some odd way, that it is helping me.
These are two phenomenal 'train the brain' tools that have met with great success.

Can We Make it any Easier to Increase Mental Power ?
In this day and age of information, we struggle to cram our brains with all the information that we can. Still we often can't seem to unlock the more than 70% of our brain's capacity that we don't use. And people are making fantastic claims every day- claims that we can have wealth, happiness, fulfilling love, and abundance. And we can have this just by choosing that we want it, and using our brains more effectively.
I have come across a myriad of powerful mind changing tools. In the twelve steps of Alanon, AA, or OA for instance, there are wonderful books and slogans that hope to instill in people a new way of thinking. Then too, there are Louise Haye's affirmations in the form of mini-books and daily reading cards. With these you can work everyday to replace the negative thoughts in your head with positive ones. There are meditations, yoga, and body-mind-spirit practices which seek to unlock the power of the mind by going within the body.
But how do you actually achieve this mind over matter? How do you actually increase mental power? It is a question we all ask ourselves- even those of us that believe it to be possible. And in this age of enlightenment, I think a lot of us believe in this much-talked-about phenomenon. Yet as we try to do it, we seem so far from our far-reaching goals. And since we are human, our many successes go largely unacknowledged, creating frustration.
If you are adventurous, you can take a life-changing course called The Landmark Forum. Here you will get to look at "mind over matter' from a very different perspective. You will delve into the question "What does it mean to be human?" You will look at yourself as a human being and see how your very 'self' was created. You can then dissect the process if you so desire to shift the very way you are, and become all that you want to be. During the process you will certainly look at how your brain operates, and when it empowers you, and when it (very frequently) dis-empowers you.
In this coming age of enlightenment, it has been said that the mind is a machine. It is a machine very much like a computer. When you input information into the mind's machine, the mind comes up with an answer. Unfortunately, sometimes what you put in the machine is intrinsically flawed information. Life gives the mind a scarring experience. Life gives it other people's words that cause pain. Life gives the mind physical and emotional trauma. Usually these events are not the average. They are not happening every day. But by their very oddity the machine that is the mind singles them out, and makes special note of them. It then outputs some negative thought into your brain that will stick with you for life- and may sometimes be so intrinsic that you can't even see it.
So then, are the claims true that the mind can accomplish any task if it truly believes it can? Are the claims true that the mind can produce overnight weight loss, mastery at any skill, no matter how foreign, and even the cessation of incurable illnesses? Is the mind truly that powerful? And if so, how do we tap into that other 70% so that our faith truly will move our own mountains? In my opinion, this faith alone would be a true miracle.
There is a lot of speculation that you can skip over the hard work of 'mind over matter.' They say that you can give up your daily affirmations and bathroom books and simply train the brain in any direction you want- while you lay there and relax, and listen to a CD or tape. What a wonderful idea? They call this method brain entrainment, and I am told there are no subliminal methods to worry about. Personally I am inclined to give this method a try, and stop working so hard.
Until then, my task as I look at brain entrainment, seems to be one and only one thing%u2026 to keep doing it, plugging away at a steady pace, for a few minutes a day, every day. This may very well be the key that has me permanently increase mental power- no matter which methodology I choose.
Don't miss this great 'train your brain' tool.

The Difference Between Perception and Reality
As you increase you mental power, you increase the mind's ability to make sense of
life and all that life includes. You increase the ability to see 'beyond the nose on your face.' so to speak- or at least to see that you often don't see beyond it. Follow this blog for more about this interesting phenomenon of being human.
