As website owners, we are always looking to increase on line traffic to our sites and blogs. In general, more website traffic equals more money.

But we shouldn't limit ourselves to on line methods for generating traffic. Let's think of some offline techniques that we can use to increase on line traffic.

1. Advertise in the Yellow Pages. Even if your business is totally in cyberspace you can advertise your products and services in the Yellow Pages, which is still used by millions of people.

2. Direct mail advertising can be a highly effective way to build your website's brand name. Send a letter or a small gift to prospects, making sure your website's name is placed prominently. If you give them a calendar they'll be looking at your name all year. If you give them a coffee mug they'll see it first thing every morning. Be creative.

3. Bumper stickers are an inexpensive way to promote your site. The guy sitting behind you in traffic may be looking for exactly what your website offers.

4. The Super Bowl may be out of your price range, but you can advertise on many local radio and television stations for as little as a couple hundred dollars. Choose your time slot carefully and you can see a highly targeted increase in web traffic.

5. Have a contest. The prize can be a sample of your product or a free service call, depending on your type of business. People love contests. Plus, you'll quickly build a mailing list of prospects to follow up on.

6. Wear your domain proudly. Print it on t-shirts and baseball caps and wear them. Wherever you go you'll be a walking advertisement for your site. Give them away to friends and family so they can help you increase on line traffic too.

If you haven't seen the movie, I highly recommend it as it's one of my all-time favorites. Kevin Costner plays an Iowa corn farmer struggling to pay his bills. One evening he hears a voice from the cornfield that simply says "If you build it, they will come."

He goes on to build a baseball field over much of his land and despite all odds, people do indeed come.

Obviously this is just a movie and not the most realistic when you figure it also stars ghosts of long dead baseball players.

They assumed all they had to do was throw together a website and wait for the cash to start pouring in. Well, it doesn't really work that way.

Getting serious traffic isn't all that hard, but it does require a little bit of work...at least in the beginning. Once you're up and running (and if you do things right) you can pretty much leave it on auto-pilot and just go back and tweak things a bit here and there.

When I first started building websites, I was like most newbies. I desperately wanted to increase on line traffic. And I wanted to do it quickly and easily.

One option I looked into was buying hits. I'm sure you've seen ads somewhere promising "10,000 unique visitors for only $9.95" or something along those lines.

Sounds like a great way to get tons of traffic to your site for almost nothing. And I almost did it.

But then I did some research and I found that nearly everyone that used these types of services was disappointed. Yes, there traffic did get a temporary surge. But there sales did not.

Why?

Because the way these services work, the traffic is not at all targeted. The visitors you get are not looking for what you're offering so there's very little chance they will buy.

In fact, its unlikely anyone is really looking at your site. Most of these services bring you visitors as some sort of traffic exchange or reward system where web surfers receive points for clicking on your link. But if you check your stats you'll see most of the visits last only about a second. They're not interested in discovering what you have to offer. They're just looking to collect some more bonus points.

If you think I'm wrong, you can try one of these services out for yourself. They are pretty cheap so at least you won't have much to lose. But if I'm right, don't say I didn't warn you.

Increasing online traffic is something you should always be looking to do, but you should also remember to look at your stats to determine where your traffic is coming from. (You do use a stats program to track traffic don't you?)

Analyzing your traffic is absolutely vital to determine a plan for increasing on line traffic. Seeing where your traffic is coming from will help you indentify what you need to improve on your site to boost traffic even more.
