The headline of the sales copy is the most important aspect of any sales page. The headline is what grabs the attention of the visitor and makes them want to read more, which makes it the most important part of any sales page to get right.
There is an excellent tool called Google Website Optimizer, which allows you to run any number of split tests on your content and automatically send traffic to the most responsive copy. This tool is completely free to use. BUT in order to get data, you need responsive traffic. And that can be expensive.

I want to start this lens by telling you the story of something that happened to my good friend Dan Blackburn way back in 2003. At the time, "downline builders" were just becoming popular, Dan was one of the first marketers to set one up. The program that he set up is now defunct, but that's not important to the story.
This story is about how changing one word in a headline, increased sales by over 100% and sign ups by over 400%
But let me set the scene first.
Back then, Dan was new to online marketing, he wanted to make some money online and foolishly thought that the best way to find out how to do that was to type "make money online" into Google. After doing that, Dan went down a path of misinformation and delusion that he eventually became a part of. He signed up for this program and that program and they all promised to make him rich... if only he could get 2 people to join, who also got 2 people to join and so on.
So Dan set up a site, with the headline... "I want to join your program" and started advertising it on start page programs (which were all the rage back then). However, Dan figured that the only people actually using the start pages were people trying to promote their own "opportunity"... The same opportunities that Dan had been signing up for.
The page was targeted at them... and it he tells me that it did really well with that headline.
Then one day someone said... You should say We instead of I... "We Want To Join Your Program" instead of "I Want To Join Your Program".
And with changing that one word, sales and sign ups increased dramatically!
That is the value of a good headline... Dan thought that he already had a good headline with "I want to join your program" and he did... but changing one word of it made it over 4 times better!
The moral of this story is that changing a headline, even slightly can make a massive difference to the ROI that you get from your advertising.
I tell you this story because it is a really good example of how to smallest change to a headline can make a massive difference.
Dan worked hard promoting these "scams" and often got more than the 2 people he needed to "get rich", but he never did "get rich", he made some money for sure, but the tens of thousands of dollars that EACH of these "companies" (scams) that he joined promised, never materialized. One reason for this, he tells me is that not one of them still exists!
Dan did not make money by trying to "get rich quick", not even after setting up his one "downline group" and not even after increasing his conversion rate by over 100% and sponsoring hundreds of people into into his "downlines".
A lot of people make the same mistake that Dan did... Fortunately, I met him before I fell into the same trap and he advised me not to go there.
The Cost Of Testing

Get rich schemes aside, getting the right headline for your sales copy is crucual, especially when you are spending top dollar to advertise. The example above is quite extraordinary, it's unlikely that you are going to see that kind of increase in response by changing one word of your sales copy... but even if you can increase sales by 5% or 2% or even just 1% it can make a massive difference to your bottom line.The only way to really know which headline will convert the best is to test. You never know until you test, you may think that you know which headline will perform the best, but until you have tested all your headline ideas, you will never really know which headline will make the most sales for you.

However, it is not free really, because in order to use it effectively, you need good, responsive traffic. The kind of traffic that Google sell through their Adwords program. And you need a lot of it. When doing a simple A-B split test to find out which of 2 headlines is the best at making sales, you really need to send enough visitors to your page to generate AT LEAST 100 conversions. If you page has say a 10% response rate on average, you'd need to send 1000 targeted visitors to your page in order to complete the test.
If you're paying say 50 cents per click on Google Adwords, that traffic would cost you $500, if you were paying $2 per click it would cost you $2000. (You could pay a lot more).

How To Run Marketing Tests Much Faster
The more responsive your sales page is, the faster and cheaper it is to run marketing tests. If for example, you are getting a 50% response rate on your sales pages, instead of a 10% response rate, this makes a massive difference to the amount of traffic that you need to send to the test in order to find a winner.With a 10% response rate, we need to send 1000 visitors to the page in order to complete the test. This costs $500 at 50 cents per click, but if the page has a 50% response rate, we only need to send 200 visitors to the page in order to get the 100 responses that we need to complete the test. This only costs $100 at 50 cents per click.
So the more responsive your page is, the cheaper it is to get the data that you need to complete your A-B headline split test.
