America's Independence Day - The 4th of July

One of the grandest holidays celebrated in the United States is the 4th of July, Independence Day. This is America's birthday. The USA is a young nation and will be just 234 years old this year.

How do you celebrate the 4th of July? Firework displays are keynote events for this holiday. I'll show you some videos of past firework displays from some of America' s great cities. You'll learn little history and have fun along the way. You can even shop for great 4th of July cards and gifts to show your American pride.

Let's get started.

What Is Independence Day?

When Did It Occur?

Spirit of '76

Independence Day commemorates the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4,1776, declaring independence from the Kingdom of Great Britain. Commonly known as the 4th of July, this holiday is associated with fireworks, parades, barbecues, picnics, concerts, baseball games and various ceremonies celebrating the history, government, and traditions of the United States.

The actual legal separation of the colonies from Great Britain occurred on July 2, 1776, when the Continental Congress voted to adopt the resolution of independence proposed by Richard Henry Lee of Virginia. Then the work began on the actual Declaration with Thomas Jefferson as the principal author.

One of the most enduring myths about Independence Day is that the Congress signed the Declaration on July 4, 1776. This myth became so firmly established that even Thomas Jefferson and John Adams (2 of the signers) came to believe it. Most of the delegates actually signed the declaration on August 2, 1776. In a remarkable series of coincidences, both John Adams and Thomas Jefferson, the only 2 signers of the Declaration to become President, died on the same day: July4, 1826, the United States' 50th anniversary.

I haven't made any plans yet. i know there will be lots of options to choose from, but sometimes I just celebrate quietly at home. We don't have any family close by. Sometimes it seems wise to just watch out for our property, since it's the height of fire season and we live on a main highway en route to one of the local celebrations.

I won't be anywhere in the USA on July 4th, I don't presume. However, I intend to be in a large Canadian city for Canada Day on July 1st. I look forward to seeing a parade and seeing fireworks.
