Independence Day Around the World - Celebrate Freedom in Other Countries

Celebrate Independence Day in Your Country - Or Someone Else's!

As an American, I think of Independence Day as July 4th, when the United States signed the Declaration of Independence and declared its freedom from Great Britain.

Of course, we're not the only ones who have won our freedom from another country or power, and so I wanted to honor all countries who celebrate their independence by listing them here.

This list is by no means complete and is constantly being updated. If you know of a country not listed here that also celebrates its Independence Day, be descriptive with any information you have. If you know dates, countries and other circumstances of independence, post at the bottom.

Each country listing below shows the name of the free country or republic, the date of its declaration of independence and the country from which it gained its freedom. In the event that a country was freed more than once (Georgia, for example, which declared itself a Republic from Russia and then later broke away from the USSR), the dates will appear in the appropriate month category.

I've also tried to include as much information about each country's struggle for independence when I have the information or done the research.

Let Freedom Ring!

Who was controlling these countries in the first place?

All of the nations listed below were taken over during times of war and exploration, or have always existed, and at some point, the people within rose up to change the way things were in their country.

Some nations contained warring factions of people with different government views and ethnicities that split the country or drove out aggressors, others were taken over during expansion and were eventually reclaimed as their own, and others overthrew governments or rebuked colonial control so as to form their own nation.

The list shows many claims lost by England/UK, Spain, France, Portugal and Belgium. These were the major territorial powers up to the mid to late 20th century, and as time went on, more and more countries rose to their own rule.

Some territories and countries broke away from others as is the case in Africa, Europe and Asia as new boundaries were drawn and new countries were created.

A great deal of line re-drawing occurred after the fall of the Soviet Union, allowing the satellite nations that had been absorbed into the USSR to regain their previous sovereignty.

Some nations now cease to exist as they have either been absorbed by other countries, or have been carved up to form multiple new countries. In some of these cases, the loss of a nation is mourned, but to some of those people, it is the opportunity to celebrate the rise of a nation for a particular race, class, ethnicity or religion.

Very good, indeed! But a minor complaint: ¿Did you ever heard of Argentina? Is not a very important country, but due the richness of its soil, can produce enough food to feed about 400 million people. China is buying now practically all of Argentina Soy beans harvest, that is million of dollars in income. But right now, due to the corrupt government in power, the situation for the people, in terms of liberty of opinion, or economic stable future (the real inflation rate is around 30 %) is dismal. Anyway the independence date is July 9. Interesting site.

Duly noted! There are now entries for Serbia and Romania, although there is more than meets the eye. Serbia has gone through many changes including territorial disputes and arrangements with Hungary, Austria, Transylvania, Yugoslavia and others, including absorption by the Soviets. If you are referring to Statehood Day, I have included it. Romania is similarly conflicted, having been under several thumbs since the ousting of the Ottomans, including Soviet control. I found two different days to celebrate including one in December.

I have not forgotten any country...I simply haven't gotten to it yet. There's alooooot of countries out there, many of which don't exist any more. If you have information, please let me know. Thanks!
