Anklets are a curious aspect of Indian culture, often made of precuius metals, some having tiny bells attached.
An anklet is like a bracelet, but worn around the ankle, i.e. it is a piece of jewellery worn around the ankle.
Anklets are traditionally worn by unmarried women in India, and became fashionable in western countries in the twentyith century.
While in western popular culture both younger men and women may wear casual leather anklets, they are more popular among women.
Anklets made of precious metals, or those containing precious or semi presious stones are almost exclusively worn by women.

Indian Anklets
Metal anklets are of two types - flexible and inflexible.
Flexible anklets are sometimes called pajeb / jhanjhar in and are made creating a chain.
It is these flexible chain type anklets that are sometimes fitted with sonorous bells. These are simply linked onto the ankle chain so that the wearer can make pleasing sounds while walking.
These precious anklets with sonorous bells attached are often worn by dancers.
Inflexible anklets are created by working metal sheet to create a hoop of appropriate size.
Indian bangles are often made from glass, however, this material is not suitable for producing anklets, so this technique is not used.
