The U.S. Five Cent Indian Head Nickel

These popular and highly collectible five cent U.S. coins are often referred to by many as a buffalo or Indian head nickels. I began collecting these nickels when I was a kid and today these are still one of my favorite coins. The American Indian Head nickel was designed by sculptor James Earle Fraser and depicts a bust of a Native American Indian on the front of the coin and an American bison on the rear of the coin. This five cent coin was the first United States coin to feature a wild animal on it other than the Bald American eagle. These coins were produced by the United States Mint and minted from 1913 to 1938.

These beautiful U.S. coins were minted at the Denver, San Francisco, and Philadelphia mints and will feature a 'D' if minted in Denver, an 'S', if minted in San Francisco and feature no mint mark if minted in Philadelphia. The American Indian Head five cent nickel was later replaced by the Jefferson nickel in 1938.
