The United States Indian Head Cent
The U.S. Indian penny replaced the U.S. Flying Eagle one cent coins and was produced by the United States Mint from 1859 to 1909. These one cent copper coins designed by James Barton Longacre feature a bust of Lady Liberty wearing a Native Indian head dress with a band containing the word Liberty on the front or obverse of the coin.
Indian cents minted from 1859 to 1864 have no mark referring to the coins designer. In 1864 Longacre made some detail modifications to the front of the coin and the letter L standing for his last initial was placed on the ribbon located on Liberty's neck. Coins were minted at the Philadelphia mint and also at the San Francisco Mint during 1908 and 1909. In 1909 the Indian cent was replaced by the Lincoln Head penny.

Key Date Indian Head Pennies
The 1909 S Indian cent minted at the San Fransico Mint has the lowest mintage of this penny coin series with a total of 309,000 minted.Although it has the lowest number of coins minted, the 1909 S is not the rarest coin of the series. The 1877 Indian Head with a mintage of 852,500 coins produced at the Philadelphia Mint is much harder to find than the 1909 S and can be quite expensive especially in high condition grades.
