With more than one-third of the country protected (or exposed :P) to water, India has one of the finest collection of beaches in the world.
With soaring temperatures in summers across India, they are not only the fav destinations for international tourists; but also the fav picnic spot for local weekend visitors.
Goa is the Beach capital of India. With more than half a dozen beaches in the top 10 beaches in India, Goa needs no intro for a visitor. But there are other virgin, beautiful beaches across the country.
Marari Beach, Kerala
Marari originates from " Mararikulam ", one of the local fishing villages, where life still goes on much as it did a hundred years ago, with the men going out to sea each day to earn a living bringing in the daily catch. Completely new to the holiday maker. Marari offers endless miles of superb sand beaches backed by swaying palms, virgin territory where you can experience the local charm and traditional Kerala Hospitality at its best. After an active day of shopping at nearby places, rush back to Marari simply sit and relax, watch the sun go down over the horizon and get ready for a leisurely dinner at the resort. After dinner you can rediscover the art of conversation with your fellow holidaymakers. Have a relaxing drink at the bat or just enjoy a quite moment on your veranda reflecting on the day's events. Until now Marari has been one of India's best kept secrets.
Dona Paula Beach, Goa
At the place where two of Goa's famous rivers meet the Arabian Sea is the secluded bay of Dona Paula with a fine view of the Marmagoa harbour.Named after Dona Paula de Menezes, the Dona Paula beach is popularly known as the "Lovers Paradise" due to a myth that has been attached to this place. According one legend the Viceroy's daughter after facing objections from her family about her love affair with a poor fisherman jumped of the cliff.
The Dona Paula Beach offers an opportunity to the tourists to have a sunbath and enjoy water scootering and motar boat rides.
Shopping can become a much more enjoyable experience at the beaches of Goa. Dona Paula is one such place where several shops are located along the beachside, selling variety of goods ranging from eatables to clothes. Fishermen-turned-local vendors also sell straw hats, lace handkerchiefs, and spices in these shops. Feni and port wine, which are the two Goan liquor specialties are a must buy and local liquor is easily available.
Gopalpur on Sea, Orissa
This is the one beach that is as yet, not exposed much to tourism and hence still unspoiled. If you are looking for a quiet holiday in the lap of nature, the beach at Gopalpur awaits you. A golden beach fringed by sand dunes and ruins of an old jetty from where, in medieval times, sailors set out to Indonesia, make this an ideal place for a relaxing holiday. A perfect beach, fairly isolated and undisturbed by the day-trippers.One can still see the crumbling walls and pillars of the jetty, witness to its past glory of commercial activity. The pleasures of the Blue Beach and the Blue Bay of her backwaters continue to lure the water babies. Gopalpur-on-Sea is a surfer's delight and excellent for sailing.
Also, Chilka lake, situated at a distance of 45-km from Gopalpur and spreading over an area of 1,100-sq-km, is the largest brackish water lake in the country and attracts large number of migratory birds.
Kovalam Beach, Kerala
Situated on the Malabar Coast along the Kerala shoreline is a small village of Kovalam. This quiet town of Kovalam came on the tourist map, when its beautiful and secluded beaches were discovered.Today Kovalam has become one of the most popular beach hangouts in India. Kovalam means a grove of coconut trees and truly the coconut trees along the beaches gives it a ravishing look.

Vendors ply on the beach calling attention to their wares, which are mostly souvenirs like T-shirts and cute little Indian dolls made from seashells.
Baga Beach, Goa
Baga beach offers the perfect escape for those looking for peace and quiet unlike the larger beaches in Goa.Essentially, Baga is a fishing beach and its russet sands are now a top draw among tourists for sun-bathing and watersports. The Baga river flows along one side of the beach, which drops steeply to the water. Fishing canoes make use of the good boat launching conditions and now-a-days provide rides to tourists too.
Crocodile and dolphin spotting down the backwaters of the Mandovi and Zuari Rivers is an alternative attraction for visitors to Baga beach. The banks of these rivers are covered with mangrove trees, inhabited by crocodiles in these swampy regions. Dolphins can be spotted at the mouth of the Mandovi River.
Besides this, Baga's nightlife is one of the liveliest in Goa and is the perfect expression of the Goan and Western mix of culture. Live music and a free flow of booze makes the beach very attractive to youngsters. The tattoo shops and massage bars offering Ayurvedic body and foot massages are quite popular with the foreigners.
Marina Beach, Chennai
Though it is debatable to call it the second longest beach in the world, Marina is surely one of the longest beaches in the continent (13 KM). Its a sandy beach unlike other rocky beaches in the west coast.A famous characteristic of the beach is the set of stone statues that adorn the roadside area of the beach. Most statues are of Indian/local legends like Mahatma Gandhi, Kannagi, Thiruvalluvar, while others have symbolic significance like the Statue of Labour.
Close to the Marina beach is the aquarium, which has some of the most exotic collection of tropical sea fishes and fresh water fishes. The Ice House, which was used to store ice brought from Great Lakes in North America, is south to the Aquarium.
With its natural sandy beauty and spacious promenade and beautiful gardens, the Marina beach is a major attraction for tourists visiting Chennai. One can even shop around the beach, with local vendors hawking wares ranging from shell and glass baubles to kites and fruit juices. There are also facilities of pony rides at the beach site, which attract the children's interest the most.
