The Indian Premier League cricket seris is the latest offering of the Board of Control for Cricket In India. Eight teams representing the top cities in India will play against each other in a series of 59 matches to win the championships.

The matches will be played in April and May and feature the top 80 ICC ranked cricketers from around the world. BCCI has auctioned off the top 8 teams to the highest bidders.

Big name industrialists, businesshouses, moviestars and others have bought out the city-based teams for millions of dollars making the Indian Cricket Board richer. according to BCCI the similar league is being for the women's cricket too.

The owners of teams now have to buy players for their respective teams and over 80 players have been offered contracts by the BCCI to play in the series. These players will be bought by the higest bidders and will then play as part of their city teams.

The twenty20 format of cricket has already caught the fancy of Indian fans with India having won the inaugural Twenty20 world championship in 2007.

Cricket is big business in India with billions of dollars being made in TV and broadcasting rights, advertisements, endorsements by players, sponsorships and much more.

The amount of money in cricket in India is mind boggling. IPL is set to capitalise in on this fervour and devotion of the Indian fans for thiw game.
