Introduction to Indie Music
According to popular culture the most common and widely recognized definition of independent or Indie Music is that it is music that is not connected with a major or corporate recording label.
Indie music can contain any of a number of genres, scenes, subcultures and stylistic and cultural attributes. Indie musicians and bands set themselves apart by a do-it-yourself approach, therefore appearing independent from commercial pop music and mainstream culture.
Many artists now choose to release their music on independent record labels. This usually gives them the ability to keep more creative freedom and control over their music then major labels would allow. These independent labels still provide some business support to the musicians and bands although on a much smaller scale than the large corporations. Unfortunately independent labels sometimes lack the finances to compete with corporate labels. Though some independent labels offer a royalty rate of 10-15% like the major labels, it is becoming increasingly more common for independent labels to offer a profit-sharing deal in which as much as 40-75% of the net profits go to the artist. That makes it much more attractive for the musician or band to go with these small independent labels.
I have included in this lens two rss feeds dealing with Indie Music. They fall directly after the information about Tuneflow.
There are a growing number of Indie Labels on the market today. One of these that I have taken notice of is out of Lincoln Nebraska where I live. It is Tuneflow and it is a creation of Gery Carson of Carson Services, Inc. In just over six months they grew to over 400 artists. Tuneflow is a purely independent label and is not affiliated with a major label in any way. The music that is part of Tuneflow is distributed by independent affiliates. If you would like to get involved in listening to music from independent artists or if you and your band want to enter contests and sell your music through an independent label I would encourage you to click on the graphic below to get more information.
