Independent Game Developers Need Love Too

You won't find info on the newest console, or the blockbuster commercial game here. This is a place for all those games that you have probably never heard of, all those unknown developers.

Support Indie Developers

Indie games are a unique experience that you usually won't find in commercial games. Support the developers in any way you can.

Why Play Indie Games?

When developers make games for commercial companies, they are somewhat limited to how much creative content they can put into the game. They have to think about what will sell to the widest audience possible. Much to the chagrin of hardcore gamers, the industry is being taken over by "casual" games geared towards soccer moms and grandparents. I don't blame them, they need to make games that appeal to a big audience.

I'm not saying that there are no good commercial games either. But indie developers can do whatever they want with their games. They aren't limited in the least with their content. Some of the most creative and original games are made in some guy's basement. A vast majority of indie games are free to play too, so you get killer games without the price.

A Guide to the Best Indie Games

My Opinion:

There are many games on the internet that could be considered "indie". Everyone and his brother has access to free game engines, and can start making a game. But it takes true artistic talent to make something that truly stands out. This lens is devoted to showcasing the best games that indie developers have to offer.

Cave Story

The only ay I can describe Cave Story to someone who hasn't played it is this: if you don't play it once in your life, your life is unfulfilled. It exemplifies all that is great about video games. The game takes place underground in an island that is floating above the sky. The plot is very full and satisfying, if you complete all of the games 3 possible endings. The route you take is decided by what choices you make throughout key points in the game.

The gameplay is very smoothly polished, and you can tell that the author, Pixel, took time in planning and programming every aspect. It's a mix between a platformer, shooter, RPG, and adventure game that is neatly packaged into a perfect ride. There are a total of nine possible weapons in the game but it is only possible to have six at a time due to the multi-route nature of the game.

In short, Cave Story is what all indie developers want to accomplish. You won't find any publication about independent games and not find this superb game mentioned.

Knytt and Knytt Stories

While this game, like Cave Story, is a platformer, Knytt and it's successor Knytt Stories is totally unique and different from what you will ever experience. The focus of the game is on exploration, and exploring the beautifully drawn world of Knytt is as awesome as complex gameplay.

In Knytt, you control a small creature who was abducted by an alien. The alien's ship crash-landed on a strange world, and it is up to you to find the ship's scattered parts to escape. The game is quite short, but some parts can seem drawn out and tedious when you are searching for an elusive item. The massive non-linear world is quite easy to get lost in.

Knytt Stories is very similar, with the addition of a few new abilities. But the awesome part about Knytt Stories is the level editor. There is a thriving community on the developer's forums of level expansion packs made by fans. There are also some official level packs made by Nifflas.

Get Into Indie Games

Want to get involved in the indie gaming community?

There are many sites and blogs devoted to spreading indie games. Here are a few.

YoYo Games

Mark Overmars, the creator of the game development software Game Maker, had a site for a while that had a forum called the Game Maker Community. The community grew, and pretty soon the site became yoyogames.com, a huge site full off great games submitted by users of Game Maker. Anyone can download a copy of Game Maker and start churning out games, and you can set up an account and start submitting. Hundreds of talented game designers hang out here, and the next big web games usually start out here.
