Great stations online
- The Current
- The Current from Minnesota Public Radio has been my favorite since soon after they launched in early 2005. And to think the good people of the Twin Cities get to listen to this over the air.
- SomaFM: Listener-Supported, Commercial-Free Internet Radio
- The granddaddy of internet broadcasting. I mostly listen to Indie Pop Rocks. Elise Nordling, who DJ's this channel does a great job of keeping the music fresh.
- KCRW.com
- Alternative, Eclectic, World, Pop, Jazz, Electronic, House and Hip Hop music and NPR, PRI, BBC and VOA news. Listen live, via podcast, or on-demand with RealAudio, Windows Media, and iTunes.
- Radio DavidByrne.com
- The ex-Talking Heads singer puts out an eclectic mix that seems to change up pretty often. It's nice when people who have good taste in music decide to share with the rest of us.
- KEXP 90.3
- Another great station, this one out of Seattle. They also put out a podcast of music from the Pacific Northwest (rss feed included below). Thanks to Emily for putting me on to this one.
- little radio
- L.A. Based internet radio
KEXP Podcast
KEXP now offers full-song podcasts of an eclectic mix of artists from the Pacific Northwest and around the world, making it the first radio station in the U.S. to offer music podcasts of this scope. Some recent artists include: Spoon, 50 Foot Wave and Clap Your Hands Say Yeah.
NOTE: Squidoo's RSS module seems to be having problems, so the links below don't go where they are supposed to. I have contacted them about this, but in the meantime the podcasts can be downloaded via iTunes using the following link to subscribe -- http://www.kexp.org/podcast.xml

- VLC media player - Overview
- Some stations (The Current, Somafm) have started to stream using aacPlus, which allows for high quality with much lower bandwidth. Unfortunately many of the most popular media players don't yet support aacPlus. VLC is the one you want to use if you're on a Mac or Linux.
- WINAMP.COM | Winamp.com: Media Player, Skins, Plug-ins, Videos, Songs, Riffs, Jams, Grooves
- Winamp is what you want to use to listen to aacPlus streams on Windows.

Sample question --
"My iTunes plays AAC, but your stream doesn't work. Is something wrong?
Unfortunately, iTunes can't currently play aacPlus streams. The first three letters may be the same, but aacPlus is very different from normal AAC. The significant improvements found in aacPlus mean that the makers of audio players (Windows Media player, iTunes, etc.) will need to update their software to work with the new format. We have no power over Microsoft, Apple, or RealNetworks, but we have every indication that broad-based adoption is coming soon."
