(Some of the) Islands of Indonesia
- Bali
- The island of Bali is the cornerstone of Indonesia's tourist industry. Despite the devastation of tsunami, attacks by terrorists, horrible nigh club fires, air disasters, and the global economic climate, Bali continues to be one of the major tourism destinations in the Pacific. Before becoming a province in its own right, the island was the westernmost portion of the Tenggara region. The island is also the center of Hinduism in Indonesia. The capital of Bali is Denpasar..
- Java
- Java is an island of Indonesia, and is divided into several provinces. Jakarta, the capital of Indonesia is situated towards the Western end of the north coast of the island. It is the most populous island in Indonesia and the most populous island in the world. The (in)famous volcano, Krakatoa, lies to the West* of Java in the straits between the islands of Java and Sumatra.
As to 1969 Maximilian Schnell film, Krakatoa, East of Java. some regard the title as an error [ the studio ran it as "The Volcano" for a while], others suspect it was part of a complex self-send-up by the screenwriters of the film's improbable plot - Kalimantan (Borneo)
- Kalimantan is the Indonesian name for the island of Borneo. Four Indonesian provinces take up 3/4 of the island, and the remaining quarter (the North-West of the island) is shared between the independent country of wiki/Sarawak">Sarawak..
- Maluku Islands (Moluccas)
- The Maluku Islands (Moluccas) or the Spice Islands*; were at one time the world's only source of nutmeg and mace. These and many other spices available on the islands attracted the attention of the European colonizing powers to the region, especially the British, Portuguese and the Dutch. [The Dutch traded Manhattan to the British for one of the smaller islands!]
There are reputed to be 999 islands inthe Moluccas. They are now divided into two Indonesian provinces - Maluku and North Maluku..
*The islands of Zanzibar, of the coast of East Africa, were also called the Spice Islands. - Papua (New Guinea)
- The Eastern part of the island was under Austrlian administration and is now the independent country of Papua New Guinea. The Eastern portion is divided into two provinces, Papua, and West Papua, which at one time was the focus of secessionist activity as "West Irian Jaya"
- Sulawesi (Celebes)
- The Celebes is the Portuguese name for the island of Sulawesi (they thought it was an archipelago). The Indonesian name is possibly derived from the sources of iron (besi) on the island. It is now divided into six provinces. The cross-shape of the island was probably created by two arrow-shaped land masses colliding, at the boundary of the Asian and Australian tectonic plates..
- Sumatra
- Sumatra is the largest island wholly within Indonesia. The middle third of its north-east facing coast runs parallel with the Malay peninsula to form the a>, one of the most important shipping lanes in the world. Sumatra is the seat of severa significant ancient kingdoms, notably Srivijaya and Samudra.t is in
One of the island;s most significant provinces is Riau, which is an exemplar of global conservation issues. It is rich in oil and gas resources, and is losing land rapidly to the sea as a result of extensive logging.. - Tenggara
- Tenggara mean "South West" in both Malay and Indonesian, but the Lesser Sunda Islands that make up a significant portion of Tenggara are actually about mid-way East-West in Indonesia, to the south of Sulawesi. Perhaps most significant is the presence in the Tenggara region, of East Timor, East Timor was a Portuguese colony, invaded immediately and annexed by Indonesia on obtaining independence from Portugal, and now newly independent again as a result of self-determiniation under UN supervision.
