Industrial Pollution: History

The United States Environmental Protective Agency estimates that up to 50% of the country's pollution produced by industry. Developing countries excitedly forge ahead adopting new industrial ventures, creating jobs and revenue. But as evidenced by the Industrial revolution of the late 18th and 19th centuries, industrial progress is not without consequences. During the Industrial Revolution pollution was rampant, destroying the environment and causing adverse health.

Today, our country has standards and rules about proper industrial emissions, disposal and operation. However, preventing industrial pollution is an ongoing process. As new processes are developed to improve plant efficiency and reduce hazardous waste output, industries need to modernize their pollution prevention efforts.

Pollution from VOCs

Volatile Organic Compounds

Industrial pollution originates from many of the varied processes. The result of industrial work is often VOCs.

Volatile Organic Compounds are defined as compounds with a high vapor pressure and low water solubility. These compounds evaporate easily at room temperature. VOC's are often produced in industrial settings such as paint manufacturing, printing processes and pharmaceuticals development.

You might be surprised to know that VOCs can exist in your home from common cleaners, dry cleaned clothing and wood varnish. The EPA estimates VOC concentrations indoor can be up to 10 times higher than concentrations outdoor.

Pollution and Contributing Industries

The leading contributor to pollution globally is industrial processes. Newspaper printing, cement mixing, pharmaceuticals and coal mining are all industries which contribute pollution to the land and air. New EPA standards will strengthen the regulatory power of the government to insist factories and manufacturers adhere to environmentally friendly guidelines. From monitoring emissions of chemicals to improving energy efficiency, preventing industrial pollution will improve our world and enhance industries' bottom line.

The Commercial Printing Industry includes roll and paper handling, web drying and conditioning and other processes that produce VOCs and pollution.

Pollution Prevention

The systems for managing toxic emissions

In industry heat and pressure are used to manufacture a wide variety of products. When heat and pressure combine gases are emitted. Some gases are inorganic and some are organic, or VOCs. Those fumes and smoke escape into the air and are responsible for acid rain, smog and air pollution. (Source)

To prevent air pollution industries employ the use of thermal oxidizers, bioscrubbers and solvent recovery systems. These systems help capture harmful emissions and clean them before they are released into the atmosphere.

Thermal Oxidizers

Because VOCs are organic in nature they have a heat value. Essentially, they are a fuel which can be burned. Thermal Oxidizers accomplish the burning of VOCs effectively breaking them down into a water and carbon dioxide which are non-harmful to the atmosphere.
A regenerative thermal oxidizer RTO enables VOCs to self-combust, with some help from natural gas. The resulting emissions are water and CO2, safe for release.

Solvent Recovery

Another method for preventing industrial pollution is through solvent recovery. A solvent recovery system captures VOCs and directs them through a condenser or an adsorbent. If sent through a condenser the solvents are recovered directly from the condenser. In solvent adsorption the VOCs absorb and then are desorbed, and then finally condensed and recovered.

Bioreactors and Bioscrubbers

According to the Environmental Protection Agency, bioreaction is the use of microbes to consume pollutants from contaminated air.

It is a natural process for organic compounds like VOCs to decompose in the presence of microbes. Bioreactors and bioscrubbers harness their degrading abilities to break down various pollution emissions.
