How to Choose the Perfect Halloween Costume for Your Baby or Toddler
Take it from me, a stay at home mom to a toddler and an infant, choosing the right costume for your little one requires a lot of thought, creativity, and maybe even a little luck!
Choosing the Right Costume for Your Baby
Finding the Perfect Infant Halloween Costume
There are so many cute costume out there for babies. It can be so exciting buying your baby's first Halloween costume. When you look through the adorable costumes you are probably thinking how great your little bundle of joy is going to look in all the pictures you're going to take. But, before you buy the cutest Halloween costume you can find for your baby, there are a few things to keep in mind.
- Choose a costume that is appropriate for your climate. I live in Texas, and so many of the adorable warm and cozy one piece infant Halloween costumes with the hood would just be way to hot for my climate. It can be really tricky to buy the right costume for my climate because Halloween here is always really hot or it's cold I've suffered through many a Halloween in the 80's and even a few in the 90's. I've also seen Halloweens all the way down in the 30's. My solution? I buy my children the onesie inspired costumes that are legless and armless. If it ends up being a hot Halloween, they where the costume as is. If it ends up being a cold Halloween I add a matching turtle neck and pants underneath.
- Be sure the costume is soft and doesn't have any thick seems. Your little one has very sensitive skin. You might find an absolutely adorable costume, only to discover it's scratchy and your baby cries the entire time he or she is wearing it.
- There are many adorable costumes for tiny babies that are like sleep sacks. Most of them are gender neutral and they cover your whole baby and fit like a sleep sack with a hood. These kinds of costumes are great for young babies, but if your baby is rolling over or sitting up, he or she will probably not like this costume at all. If you have an older baby (probably about 4 months to 10 months) a costume with legs would be a much better choice.
- If your baby is walking, be sure not to purchase one of the footed costumes. Think of them like the one piece sleep and plays that have the built in feet. If your little one is walking, he or she will slip and fall in this costume. This can be a real concern since many infant costumes have the feet and I've known babies that have started walking as early as 9 months old.
Choosing the Right Costume for Your Toddler
Finding the Perfect Toddler Halloween Costume
It can be so exciting buying a Halloween costume for your adorable toddler. They're now old enough to walk and hold your hand and even enjoy some of the Halloween treats they collect. But, before you buy the cutest Halloween costume you can find for you baby, there are a few things to keep in mind.
- Listen to what your toddler wants. You may have your heart set on your little girl being Cinderella or you may think your little boy would make an adorable Superman, but if that's not what your toddler wants then it's probably not a good idea. My littler girl is 23 months old and she is still very flexible what she wears. As long as it's comfortable and doesn't have anything on her head (she won't even wear bows) then I can put it on her. But, sometime after age 2 kids start to develop likes and dislikes and interests. If your kid wants to wear a costume that you think is ugly or boring so be it. Just remember that Halloween is for kids and let your kid be whoever makes him or her happy.
- Since your toddler will be walking around, and let's face it he or she will probably take off running a few times before the night is over, be sure the costume you purchase is visible and night time. If it isn't, add reflective shoes, wristbands, or put some reflective tape somewhere on their costume.
- It may be worth spending extra money on your toddler's costume. Why? Toddlers love to play dress up. If you get your little girl a Disney Princess costume or your little boy a Batman costume that washes and wears well, they are sure to enjoy it well beyond Halloween.

- Excellent suggestions! I especially like the idea of getting a costume to use later to play dress-up. I definitely support nurturing imagination! Blessings from a SquidAngel to you today!
