Health, Fertility and Pregnancy
Following your decision to try to get pregnant. The first productive move you should make is to visit your Doctor for a general check-up.
From a fertility point of view your check-up appointment, needs to include the following;
Blood pressure check.
Urine test for infection, also test for Glucose. As up to one in twenty women is predisposed to diabetes, and can temporarily develop it in pregnancy.
A cervical smear to ensure your cervix is healthy.
Blood group test, to see if you are Rhesus negative.
Discussion in regards to any long term health conditions e.g. diabetes, multiple sclerosis, early onset arthritis, etc. And their implications for both pregnancy and motherhood.
An immune system check, especially for rubella and toxoplasmosis. You need to be vaccinated for rubella (German measles) at least three months before you begin trying to conceive.
Discussion regarding any medications you may be taking. To check out that it is definitely safe to keep taking it during pregnancy. Also that a medication will not affect your fertility.
An investigation for silent genito-urinary infection. That could affect your chances of becoming pregnant. Or could affect the pregnancy itself.
It is interesting to note just how much body weight affects a women's fertility. In fact it has been recognized that being the right body weight can give you a flying start in the conceiving stakes.
For example for a women of average height - say 162 cm (5ft 4inches) & a medium frame. The ideal fertility weight for getting pregnant is about 55-66 Kg (122-145 lb). Though for this same height & frame the ideal weight for general health is lower - between 50 and 63 Kgs (110-139 lb).
The news here is that a healthy degree of body fat is indeed essential to a women's fertility. Women are supposed to be fatter than men for a very good reason - we need it to ovulate.
It is also for this reason that young girls do not begin to have their periods until they have at least 17% body fat. The average women has 27% of her weight as body fat. We can take from this information that it is a healthy balance for a women's individual height & frame which is optimal for good fertility.
Being overweight or clinically obese can stop a women ovulating. Causes for this may be that too much extra body fat produces a little extra oestrogen in a women's system, causing an imbalance in the ratio of reproductive hormones needed for egg ripening and release functions.
