The Common Thread Project: Raising Infertility Awareness and Communitiy Connectivity

Infertility is a disease which can leave its victims feeling very isolated in today's society, with our strong emphasis on having children and the prevalent notion that without kids, one does not have a "family." A women or couple struggling with infertility can often feel alone and disconnected from friends and family who don't understand what they are going through, emotionally as well as physically. Even a simple trip to the supermarket or department store can be difficult for a woman fighting infertility when it seems like everywhere she turns, all she sees are pregnant women, mothers with toddlers in tow, or happy families of children and parents out enjoying the day. The internet is a good source of support for the infertility community on-line, yet away from the computer and in the "real world," it can be hard to find similar refuges of help and understanding.

The Common Thread Project began as a way for those who are currently or have in the past coped with infertility to subtly but surely find each other in the day-to-day world. A simple thread tied around the wrist the color of pomegranate is a way to mark one's membership in the sisterhood of infertility. If you've defeated the disease and are now pregnant or have a happy and healthy child (and if so, congratulations!), wearing the thread can help show other women currently struggling that there is hope for success to be found - and so they know, if they see you, that you understand their pain and struggles.

This page is dedicated to providing more information on the Common Thread Project. It includes links to cool products including jewelry and clothing you can wear to join in the movement and resources to infertility support communities on-line. Of course, you will also find out where to get the "official" thread of the Common Thread Project, for the simplest way to take part!

What Does the Pomegranate Have To Do With Infertility?

The Symbolism of the Pomegranate Fruit

PomegranatesWhat does the pomegranate fruit have to do with infertility? The fruit's link to the Common Thread Project, as well as the mission statement for the project, is explained at The Stirrup Queens' History of Infertility's Common Thread, posted by Lollipopgoldstein in September of 2006:

"Pomegranates, a longstanding symbol of fertility, serve as a strong analogy to those suffering through infertility. Though each pomegranate skin is unique in colour and texture, the seeds inside are remarkably similar from fruit to fruit. Though our diagnosis is unique-endometriosis, low sperm count, luteal phase defect, or causes unknown-the emotions, those seeds on the inside, are the same from person to person. Infertility creates frustration, anger, depression, guilt, and loneliness. Compounding these emotions is the shame that drives people suffering from infertility to retreat into silence.

"In addition, the seeds represent the multitude of ways one can build their family: natural conception, treatments, adoption, third-party reproduction, or even choosing to live child-free.

"The pomegranate thread holds a two-fold purpose: to identify and create community between those experiencing infertility as well as create a starting point for a conversation. Women pregnant through A.R.T., families created through adoption, or couples trying to conceive during infertility can wear the thread, identifying themselves to others in this silent community. At the same time, the string serves as a gateway to conversations about infertility when people inquire about its purpose. These conversations are imperative if we are ever to remove the social stigma attached to infertility.Tie on the thread because you're not alone. Wear to make aware.

"Join us in starting this conversation about infertility by purchasing this pomegranate-coloured thread (#814 by DMC) at any craft, knitting, or variety store such as Walmart or Target. Tie it on your right wrist. Notice it on others."

At The Stirrup Queens' website, you can learn more about how the project developed through conversation and brainstorming, as well as find buttons you can add to your website to bring awareness to the project and many more resources.

I had no problems conceiving children but I do understand the heartache of those who cannot or who have difficulty with infertility and conceiving a child.
  • KonaGirl Jul 9, 2011 @ 1:06 am | delete
Infertility was never a problem in my life, plus I have 2 sisters who have chosen not to have children, but I do know how heart wrenching it can be for couples facing infertility. Knowing about the problems of over population, I am more of an advocate for saving planet earth by having less children rather than trying to figure out how to have more. With that being said, you have done well as an advocate for the cause of raising infertility awareness with the "Common Thread Project". I am leaving you with a Squid Angel blessing and added your link to My Squid Angel Wings to be featured in your neighborhood.

Thank you for taking the time to comment and for the blessing, KonaGirl! Very appreciated for your thoughtfulness.

It is a complicated situation to be sure, and one that can leave those with infertility feeling very conflicted about how to handle in their own lives, and when discussing the matter with others. Overpopulation is certainly a major problem in the world, and at the end of the day many infertile couples do end up either adopting (if they can navigate that complicated and expensive process) or not having children at all because treatments don't work, are too expensive, or they just don't want to put themselves through such invasive and difficult procedures with no guarantee of success. The frustration and pain often comes from having the simple *choice* to have even one child of their own taken away from them, from the beginning. Something that most other couples can do without difficulty or thought, we are often criticized as being "selfish" for wanting - and situations like the "Octomom" do little to help with how the world perceives infertility & infertility treatments.
