Infertility Support
If your fighting infertility then there is really no easy way to say this other than it sucks! Perhaps the most important part of dealing with infertility as an individual a couple or a family is get the right infertility support group around you. Hopefully over time I can find more information and links to helpful fertility sites and bits of information that we have come upon over the years.
Infertility Support Basics
I will start at the beginning since that seems to be the most logical place to start for this infertility support lens and it's ultimate purpose. I will begin with our situation we have been fighting infertility for almost 10 years now and needless to say it has taken quite a toll on both myself and my wife. Physically and emotionally infertility has managed to kick our booties up and down the infertile block so to speak. Which is where the idea for this lens and a site my wife and I are trying to build up as another resource for infertility support.
Here are a few vital things to remember if you are new to this whole infertility thing. This will be an emotional battlefield that will drag you and your partner down into the mud. I know that may seem harsh to say but unfortunately that is the reality of dealing with fertility issues.
So here are a few tips to get you started now that I have put the fear into you ;-) The best support advice that my wife and I ever got and followed through with was finding the humor in the daily grind of awkward tests of poking, prodding, filling up cups and becoming mechanical in those intimate moments because from this point forward it will be all about making a baby. When you realize the odds of all the right things falling into place and what your medical issues may be that are standing in your way then all that will remove any sexiness between you and your partner. So what is the great equalizer?
Humor! You will have those moments of frustration, anger, despair and all the other emotions that infertility will bring on and through it all it has been our ability to find the humor in the small things that have kept us grounded.
OK what else can I quickly share here....... Some basic risk factors that you should try and avoid if you are planning on trying to have a baby. First things first as I am sure most everyone knows by now but should still be mentioned is your age. There is an approximate age for both men and women when your chances of a successful pregnancy start to decrease. For women that begins in your early 30's and for men it starts in your early 40's.
Chemicals are high up on the list of things to avoid so you don't increase your risk factor for infertility. The two major chemicals that most doctors point out are smoking and alcohol and basically smoking I think we can all agree is really not good for anything health wise. Where as an occasional glass of wine has shown some significant health positives. Then you have all the chemicals we are exposed to in our daily lives, through our foods, drinks, hygiene and beauty products there really is no telling how all these mixtures of chemicals are effecting fertility rates.
Sorry if it seems like I am coming across as a downer there is just so many factors working against you and your fertility that I thought you should know. Besides humor though there are some great infertility support resources that are on the web today just in comparison to ten years ago when we began our fight against infertility. I will list some of the better online infertility resources with some links on the side of this page and if you have more that are not listed there by all means leave a comment in the guest book and share with the rest of us.
