Free Radicals and Inflammation and Their Role in Disease

Neuroscientist James Joseph of Tufts University warns, "Inflammation is the evil twin of oxidation. Where you find one, you find the other." The list of inflammation-induced health concerns is a long one, including allergies, asthma, osteoporosis, rheumatoid arthritis, gout, psoriasis, lupus, inflammatory bowel disease, Alzheimer's disease, heart attack, congestive heart failure, bronchitis, and diabetes.

Poor diet plays a major role in provoking inflammation. Our diets contain an overabundance of omega-6 oils which cause prostaglandins and leukotrienes. Re-balancing the levels by reducing omega-6 oils and increasing omega-3 ratios is a key factor in keeping inflammation within the normal range. I use a product from Young Living called Omega Blue which disburses in the intestines rather than in the stomach for better results.

Five Major Grades of Oils

It is important to know that there are five major grades of essential oils, all having different degrees of quality: 1) industrial; 2) food-grade 3) fragrance-grade 4) perfume grade; and 5) therapeutic grade.

Pure therapeutic grade essential oils are the only grade I recommend for healing ourselves (body, and mind) and our environments. I endorse only Young Living Therapeutic grade oils for this reason. Therapeutic grade oils are distilled as a slower speed and a lower temperature so they take longer to make and thus are more expensive. All the other grades of oil have had their molecules fractured during the rapid distillation process. The pure extracted oils carry the essence, life force, and distinctive "finger-print" of that particular oil without any major damage to it.

Lesson: Don't just buy a cheap oil from the grocery store and expect therapeutic results and then complain that oils don't work. Of course, they will not work unless they have been distilled carefully and properly.

Essential Oils Which Are Anti-Inflammatory

According to Floyd H. Chilton, PhD. "By my estimate, approximately half of all Americans suffer from an inflammatory disorder, and even more of us are at risk." Young Living therapeutic grade essential oils have potent effects against inflammation. The following essential oils work well against inflammation (see the orange box below if you want to purchase any of these oils).

Frankincense This essential oil is recognized throughout the world for its anti-inflammatory action. Japanese researchers found that triterpene compounds in Boswellia carteri "exhibit marked anti-inflammatory activity," while a study at the University of Maryland School of Medicine showed that frankincense's boswelic acids alter production of the inflammation messengers interleukin-2 and gamma interferon and also have immunomodulatory activity.

Ginger A Danish study determined that ginger inhibits prostglandin and leukotriene creation with no adverse effects reported in the patients, some of whom were in this study for 2.5 years, ginger is a potent anti-inflammatory; and strongly affects the biomarkers of inflammation.

PanAway reduces pain and inflammation, increases circulation, and accelerates healing. Relieves swelling and discomfort from arthritis, sprains, muscle spasms and cramps, bumps and bruises. It is a Young Living blend of helichrysum, wintergreen, clove and peppermint.

Rosemary oil was found to "have a therapeutic potential in treatment or prevention of bronchial asthma, spasmogenic disorders, peptic ulcer, inflammatory diseases" and other conditions.

Relieve It is a Young Living blend that is high in anti-inflammatory compounds that relieve deep tissue pain and muscle soreness. It contains spruce, black pepper, peppermint, and hyssop.

Geranium A study at Teikyo University Institute of Medicine showed this fragrant essential oil can "suppress the inflammatory symptoms with neutrophil accumulation and edema (swelling)."

Trauma Life is a Young Living blend which is anti-inflammatory and helps one to release buried emotional trauma (i.e., accidents, death of a loved one, assault, abuse). It combats stress and uproots traumas that cause insomnia, anger, restlessness, and a weakened immune response. It contains Frankincense, Valerian, Geraniam, Sandalwood, Rose, Helichrysum, Spruce, Davana, and citrus hystrix.

Essential Oils Which Are Antioxidant

Free radicals cause oxidation in our bodies. Dr. Bruce Ames of the University of California at Berkeley estimates that the DNA of our cells is attacked by free radicals over 10,000 times per DAY. And then add in the free radical insults that come from pollutants in our environments and you will see how important antioxidants are!

Here is a list of oils which are antioxidant:

Clove, Thyme, Oregano, Rosemary, Ginger, Myrtle, Melissa, E. globulus, Laurus nobilis, Coriander, Geranium, M. alternifolia, Mountain savory, Fennel, Citrus oils, Basil, and Tarragon.

I also recommend Ningxia Red juice which is VERY high in antioxidants.

Essential oils have tremendous benefits when inhaled, ingested, or applied topically. I highly recommend Young Living Essential Oils for natural wellness. See the orange box for ordering instructions.
