Inflatable Hot Tub Review

Ranked #456 in Home & Garden, #6,627 overall

A Party in Your Own Back Yard

Hot Tubs are cool and popular additions to backyards, patios, pools and even indoors, but they can be expensive, time consuming to maintain and are not portable.

Some time ago some smart people got together and said "Hey, why can't we have an inflatable hot tub that would move around?" So, the inflatable, portable hot tubs were invented and have given everyone the opportunity to own a quality hot tub for a fraction of the price and physical investment.

Check out a range of hot tubs and help us determine which one is the best for your needs and budget.

Portable Hot Tub Features

Important features for your portable hot tub:

Cost - With a full sized hot tub, you can easily pay $4,000-$10,000, and many Cadillac models go much higher. An inflatable hot tub will save you money and should run you more in the $500-$1,500 range.

Durability - Your hot tub should be made of durable materials for the outer shell, and connect well with the motor to inflate it, or inner or outer skeleton for support. In the event that your hot tub fails on you, the next best thing to have is a good warranty that will allow you to trade in for a new unit, or at least get repairs.

Capacity - Although you may want to just soak alone, let's face it - Hot Tubs are for parties!. Whether it's all of your rowdy friends, or you're having over that special someone, the right capacity for your needs is important. Consider children 12 and under as half an adult for capacity purposes.

Accessories - All tubs should come with a cover to keep out debris and to prevent kids and pets from falling in when not in use. Other tubs benefit by having mounts for music or tv, or by serving you with the ever-useful cupholder.

Inflatable, Portable Hot Tubs

Lay-Z-Spa Portable Spa

The Lay-Z-Spa features a heavy duty terylene skin and digital controls on the pump to regulate temperature. Just attach the pump, inflate, and fill. Easy to operate and use.

Inflated size is 81" x 31". It claims to be suitable for 4 people, but is really ideal for 2.

$600 price tag makes it affordable for the quality. No other bells and whistles except for the strap-down cover, but the system includes an instructional DVD if you fail to understand the directions.

Spa-2-Go

Continuing the hyphenated glory of portable hot tubs is the Spa-2-Go. With 250 gallon capacity and 69 x 106 x 20 inch dimensions, it larger and more suitable for 4 people than the Lay-Z-Spa. Another model where you simply attach the pump and inflate, the Spa-2-Go also has digital controls for ease of use.

The Spa-2-Go features built in cushioned seats for greater comfort and is built from K80 vinyl so you can take it to some rapids as well (just kidding).

Also includes a cover. $900 price tag.

Voyager Portable Spa

Although not an inflatable hot tub, it certainly is portable. Consisting of rigid outer sections that seal together to keep water in, the Voyager can be set up permanently or broken down into sections for transport (although even broken down it's a little cumbersome).

Comes complete with 2 speed pump and heater, internal seating and sturdy plastic steps

The Voyager is a behemoth at 6ft by 3ft and seats 5 adults comfortably.

The price tag is also a behemoth - $1950, but then you're paying for the highest end model, resistant to punctures and capable of being party ready.

InstaSPA

The InstaSPA measures in at 100Lx77.5Wx25.5D", big enough to comfortably seat 4 adults. This is a more standard inflatable spa, which can be inflated and then hooked up to the digital control unit.

For its $1,299.99 price tag, it better be big enough to entertain 4 people, and it does it well by adding space designed to hold your drinks! There is a lack of cupholders on other models, and the InstaSPA comes through giving you some place to put your cool beverages as the tub heats up to 104 degrees and is circulated by 8 jets.

Hot Tub Results

Cost - Regarding cost, the three best models analyzed were:

Lay-Z-Spa
Spa-2-Go
InstaSPA

with Lay-Z-Spa coming in at #1 with its downright cheap $600 price tag.

Durability - Durability allows you to enjoy your hot tub longer, with less downtime.

Spa-2-Go
InstaSPA
Voyager

The Spa-2-Go features high density vinyl and has everything built in for reduced difficulty in setting up and breaking down.

Capacity - Whether soaking alone, or throwing a party, you want a good sized tub.

InstaSPA
Spa-2-Go
Voyager

The InstaSPA is a monster, bigger, deeper and doing it in style.

Accessories - Easy-to-use controls, cupholders, useful build-ins and water jets make a difference in your hot tub experience.

Spa-2-Go and Insta-SPA - This is a toss-up. The Spa-2-Go has a simpler heater and pump, but features built-in seats and a locking cover, while the InstaSPA has places to put your drinks on its big console center.

Winner
The Spa-2-Go places in every category, and wins the durability category hands down. It may not have the fanciest heater and pump, but the quality is hidden in it's tough coating, 100 jets, built in seating and surprising capacity. At less than $900, it's also affordably priced.

Caring For Your Inflatable/Portable Hot Tub

Cleaning and maintenance are not like an in ground pool. You need to be a lot more careful with letting debris get into your hot tub, and not using strong chemicals or harsh abrasives.

Here are some links to caring for your hot tub. Always follow the manufacturer's instructions in the manual, and when in doubt, contact the manufacturer.

I want one! I have a built in pool but it doesn't have a hot tub. We have a jacuzzi in our bathtub. I would love one outside.

If you keep the inner bladder and cover on when not in use, it will help retain heat, and you won't need to run the power on all the time. Depending on model, you'll have to see how long the tub retains heat, and when you should turn it on to refresh the heat to the level you want.
