Inflatable Pool Float, Raft and Lounger Review

Ranked #9,147 in Home & Garden, #143,820 overall

Inflatable Pool Toys

When it's hot at the pool, the beach or the lake, you gotta have cold drinks, sunscreen, the perfect suit and maybe some tunes. Having your friends around too is important, or maybe you just want to float by yourself.

Either way, you're going to need an affordable, good quality, feature-filled pool float.

That's why I created the Inflatable Pool Float Review. Just a chance to see what features to look for and what products are available.

Have Fun looking around and Stay Cool!

Inflatable Float Features

Most people would think that all inflatable pool floats are the same, and there are a lot of cheap ones out there that get the job done, but like anything else you own, you want a float that will last a while, have places to put things you need when your at the pool, (and especially when you're away at the beach or lake), and won't cost an arm and a leg.

There are some features which I think are crucial to a good float:

Durable Construction - You want to find floats made with strong nylon or vinyl covers and for individual elements, heavy-gauge PVC bladders. Multiple chambers are also a plus. These features mean you'll get good long wear, and reduce punctures from rough storage and transport.

Head, Neck and Back Support - Although the whole purpose is to lie there in the pool, you still want some comfort. I prefer floats where you are a bit of an incline so you can see around, read a book or whatever while on the water. Lying perfectly flat is a bit too much when I'm trying to lay out and enjoy the sites, and floats with inclined structures tend to add more rigidity to the float so you don't feel every ripple and bump.

Cupholders and Storage - You gotta have cupholders! Where else are you going to put your drink? Although cupholders are the most important storage feature, some floats also have zippered pockets for suncreen, shades, books and the like, and they are just darn convenient.

Handles and Tie-Offs - Handles help you get on, off and reposition, but also serves as a tie off if you need one. Little reinforced handles and tie-offs allow you to attach a floating cooler to your float, or to affix to your boat, dock or poolside so you don't float off.

Value - Generally, you should be looking in the $20-40 range for a good float. Anything more than that is probably unnecessary for a pool toy, with a few exceptions, and anything less is skimping when you should be investing in a good float.

Multiple Passengers - Although you could certainly buy more floats, sometimes you want to float WITH someone, so having bigger capacity may be important to you. Some of these are just bigger rafts, and some are actually built for more people.

Miscellaneous - Does the float have cool styling or some other awesome feature? Sometimes you just see something and have to have it. Even inflatable pool floats can have "It".

Of the models listed here, these are my winners by category:

Construction - SportStuff Siesta Lounge - This thing is heavy duty, so you should get your money's worth from it.

Support - SportStuff Siesta Lounge - It's like a recliner in the pool!

Storage - SportStuff Siesta Lounge - It's got 2 cupholders for two-fisted drinkers and a zipped storage compartment. Pretty sweet.

Handles - Intex Floating Recliner Lounge - The handles were thoughtfully placed to not only get into the ergonomic float, but are also within easy reach if you have something tied on, or if you need to reel yourself in. No cupholders, but you could always attach this to it and you're good to go.

Value - Intex Floating Recliner Lounge - For around $20, this is a good way to go. Alas, no cupholders, but that can be fixed.

Multiple Passengers - There are some wacky floats (see next section) that hold multiple people, but they don't seem well thought out. The Face 2 Face Pool Float is just right, however. Big puffy headrests let you see your passenger and you have plenty of cupholders, slots for stuff and even an ice bucket.

Miscellaneous - With most floats, you have an issue of them heating up, where you splash yourself with water or put a towel over it as it bakes in the sun. The Aqua Leisure model has a cool-weave insert in the middle that doesn't heat up like vinyl and nylon do.

Winner: SportStuff Sierra Lounge - Just look at it! This could be in your living room, but in your pool it's just awesome. Comfortable, durable, practical, and just plain cool.

Honorable Mention: Intex Floating Recliner Lounge - Really affordable for the quality you get, and its minor setbacks can be offset.

The Other Candidates...Floating Oddity or Next Great Pool Accessory

Some of the products I checked out didn't seem like they'd work out too well. I included them here as a warning to float makers as for devices not to make or at least to plan better, because they are either just not good ideas, or good ideas were hatched but the execution wasn't carried out right.
