I lived in München for a summer as part of a studies abroad program and traveled extensively in Bayern and Austria but could never make it north to Berlin much to my lasting regret. Can't wait to get back to Germany and check out Berlin and the rest of the northern states.

When I was in Berlin the wall was still standing and we went through Checkpoint Charlie to East Berlin for the afternoon. We couldn't take East Berlin currency out of the country and tried to give it away, but no one would take it. My friends and I just left a big tip at a restaurant on our way out. It would be nice to go back now and see how things have changed. Congratulations on your purple star.

  • boshemia Jan 22, 2010 @ 9:05 pm | delete
I'm so glad you were awarded a purple star, I would have hated to miss this lens. I was born in Germany (Stuttgart) but we left when I was seven months old. I now have a 16 year old daughter finishing school there, and my younger two children spend summers there with their father.

I am planning a trip to Europe, and plan to spent as much time in Germany as we can, getting to know my birthplace once again. So from the bottom of my heart, than you for a glimpse into both my past and my future!!!

I discovered Berlin through a German TV series and wanted to visit the town. Now I just made sure the town really exists. Next step: going to Berlin! I add this on my "to do" list for the upcoming years. Well done, and nice to look!

I grew up in Munich, but I spent weeks and weeks in Berlin, visiting my friends and doing business. I've been many times to the former East Berlin. My uncle, Peter Schweitzer, was one of the top architects in charge of the Stalin/Lenin/whatever-it's-called-now Allee.

It's great to see pictures and stories of the new Berlin here, Ulla. Danke! Blessed heartily by a SquidAngel. :-)

  • BarbRad Aug 4, 2009 @ 6:33 pm | delete
I've been to Bonn, to Darmstadt and to some other cities. I have to say that one thing that impressed me about Germany in 1972 was that during a hike up a hill, I used an outhouse clean enough to suit a queen. I have never seen such a thing in the USA. I love German culture and the language, though I've lost most of what I learned of it in college because I've had few people to practice with her. I love seeing how the cities are surrounded by country and that you can tell them apart -- especially from the air. Here in Central and Southern California cities turn into suburbs with very little open country. It's hard to tell where one city ends and another begins.

You keep adding and it just keeps getting better and better. GOOD JOB! I'll be back to see you again.

Back before WW2 my father had a pen pal, Hermann... they cut off communication after the war because of the political situation but started writing again in the 1960s. Hermann and his family lived in East Berlin. I exchanged a few letters with Hermann's daughter, Marika, who was my age. My father went to visit them in the late sixties and had to go through Checkpoint Charlie. He brought back home movies of both East Berlin and West Berlin -- an amazing contrast as East Berlin wasn't able to remove all the war rubble and rebuild like West Berlin did. I remember when the wall was finally removed they send a photo of the family crossing into West Berlin and celebrating. Well, thanks for the trip down memory lane and for the update on how the beautiful city of Berlin is doing now! 5* lens... blessed!

I sent this lens to my mother and she corrected my earlier post - she and her cousins were not able to include a visit to Berlin on their recent trip. I guess they'll need to go next time they're in Germany.
  • AndyPo Jul 21, 2009 @ 8:52 am | delete
Great lens and pictures. I was in Berlin just a couple of weeks ago. It is indeed a beautiful and interesting city.
  • Pastiche Jul 21, 2009 @ 8:49 am | delete
My grandparents were born in Germany and immigrated to the USA in late 1920s. My mother was born in the US but visited Germany just before the war to meet her grandparents and other relatives. In the late 1970s our family lived in Mannheim for 2 years. We couldn't visit Berlin then, but Mama did go to this great city 2 years ago when she toured Germany once again with her cousins.

This lens is a most welcome new member of Senior Geek Squids group! 5*

Hello Ulla, very nice lens !
I am one of those many (or rare ?) West-Germans that have NEVER seen the wall in their life time and it does not occur in your lens :).
Berlin is great, that is what I hear from my daughter who is visiting the city this week again to see and hear a musical!
  • Marelisa Jul 20, 2009 @ 1:51 pm | delete
I've been to Germany, including Berlin, but it was many, many years ago. I remember thinking what a beautiful country it was. Now you've inspired me to create a similar lens about Panama. :-)

Wow great lens! My mom was stationed in Germany before I was born. I hear they keep there streets and sidewalks really clean. My one suggestion is just to lengthen your personal story a bit and add some personality to each of the sites. Other than that this is a very nice lens. Come see how you did at The New Squidooers Contest!
  • FarAwayJoe Jul 4, 2009 @ 7:12 pm | delete
Nice city lens. Since I plan to write lenses about some of the cities I do know something about this your lense is a welcomed template for me :). It's also nice to 'meet' some fellow Europeans here at squidoo.

I've been to Berlin 2x. Once when the Wall was up and I took a 3 hour tour of the East. Fascinating city. You have a good start here.

Hi Ulla, if you have pictures of one of the park I would love to see them. I have heard that Berlin is the "lung" of Eastern Europe because of all the parks and trees, it that true?
