Infra Red Cameras

A camera which forms an image using infrared radiation is known as thermographic camera, forward looking infrared camera or simply infra red camera which detects black body radiation of an object and converts it into an image. Its capacity of working even in total darkness has made it tremendously useful for military, police, detective agencies, fire fighters, law enforcement and anti terrorism operations as well as for rescue operations in smoke-filled buildings, dark undergrounds, astronomy related telescopes, night vision instruments, security equipments, engineering/automotive application, medical testing and diagnosis purposes, quality control systems, research and development purposes, pollution control, aerial safety operations and controls, search and rescue operations, wild life related activities, cracks detection in civil structures. The list is endless.

Infrared camera images are generally monochromatic except images captured by a sophisticated color camera with more complex construction/mechanism/system. Infrared cameras work on the theory of temperature measurement where brightest/warmest areas of the object are shown as white, intermediate temperatures as reds or yellows and dimmest/coolest areas as blue. Cooled and uncooled infrared image detectors are two major types of infrared cameras.

Though infrared cameras are manufactured as user-friendly equipments yet infrared thermography is not a "simply point and shoot" technology. So its users must be trained to understand the object or system being inspected as well as various aspects/concepts of infrared theory, heat transfer concepts, equipment selection/operation and how to eliminate or overcome common error sources and specific applications. Most important of all the above is that operating it requires utmost care, precautions and perfect training. Only trained personnel must be allowed to handle it.
