Inkheart the Movie

Meggie's father has an unusual talent - the characters from the books he reads aloud come to life in our world. Unfortunately, he's just read a villain into existence...

Inkheart is the first book in Cornelia Funke's Inkworld Trilogy featuring the adventures of Meggie and her dad, Mo.

Inkheart, the movie, was released in the UK on 12 December 2008, and is due for release in the US on 23 January 2009, and Australia on the 2 April 2009.

Eliza Bennett as Meggie

Meggie Folchart is twelve and loves books. However, her father never reads aloud to her following an incident when he accidentally read his wife into a book, and read some of the characters of the book out of it. Meggie doesn't really remember this, and she's also not really aware that she has the same ability as her father.

Brendan Fraser as Mo

Mortimer Folchart, known as "Mo", is Meggie's father. He is a bookbinder with the special skill of reading characters out of books and into the real world. Unfortunately he lost his wife, Teresa, when he read her into a book.

Paul Bettany as Dustfinger

Dustfinger is one of the characters read out of the book that Mo accidentally read his wife into. Dustfinger wants to get back into the book, to return to his wife and daughters, and comes to ask for Mo's help and warn him that another character, Capricorn, is searching for him.

(Did you know? - Actor Paul Bettany's real life wife, Jennifer Connelly, plays Dustfinger's wife in this movie.)

Helen Mirren as Elinor

Elinor Loredan is Teresa's aunt - Meggie's great aunt. Elinor is a book collector, and Mo and Meggie go to stay with her hoping that Capricorn won't be able to track them down there.

Andy Serkis as Capricorn

Capricorn is the villain read out of a storybook by Mo. He is bent on gathering as much power as possible and has developed a strong following in the real world due to his cruelty and ruthlessness. In order to stay in the real world, Capricorn must find and destroy every copy of the book out of which he was read.

(You might recognise Andy Serkis as Gollum/Smeegol from The Lord of the Rings.)

Outrageous things happen in a real way. Real things like book fantasy become surreal. Moody, atmospheric and literate. This is a film without an audience. Too serious for kids and too childish for adults... with exceptions. Amazon.com

Inkheart a magical tale with a look at humanity
*Caution: Some spoilers*

The movie sometimes flashes to shots of the medieval world of "Inkheart" and they are breathtaking - fairy tale castles, lush countryside and colorful attire. They are enticing glimpses that help you understand Dustfinger's longing for home, as well as the fascination that the world holds for characters in the novel who leave the modern world behind to enter the beautiful, but perilous world in the sequel "Inkspell."
