Free Inkscape Resources

More goodness than you can imagine

I've recently discovered the fabulous and amazing open-source Inkscape vector drawing application which runs on Linux, Mac OS and Windows.

For what I hear it's already giving Adobe Illustrator a run for its money and the current version in only 0.46. The upcoming 0.47 release is bound to have many new cool features. All that just to say that when Inkscape approaches 1.0 it might become the best graphical design application around. And all that for free.

I've collected the free resources I've discovered around the web and that I use in combination with Inkscape. Most of them are related to fonts and textures and palettes because those are the supplies you need to feed you creative urges.

Enjoy.

Inkscape resources

First of all there's the Inkscape website where you can download the application. To install Inkscape on Ubuntu just open a terminal window and enter: sudo apt-get install inkscape. I'm on Ubuntu 8.10 and I got Inkscape 0.46 which is the current stable release.

Then there's the great Inkscape manual where you can find all the details about the program. On the different pages you'll also find many examples which have been very inspiring for me so far.

And then the cherry one the cake: the amazing Screencasters' series of Inkscape screencasts. These guys are great and I've learned an awful lot about Inkscape and about graphic design by watching about 20 of these screencasts. And importantly, I've redone all the examples in these screencasts to really get the hang of it. Education without action is entertainment. So take your time, watch the screencasts and repeat the examples yourself.

Free textures

Here I've used two sources so far apart from Flickr and Google Image search.

The first one is CGTextures which has a nice stock of textures that can be downloaded in high resolution without any hassle.

The second one is Grunge Textures which has an amazing gallery of really great textures.

Here you'll find enough textures to get started with Inkscape. If you know other great texture sites please leave a comment below.

Free color inspiration and palettes

Colourlovers.com is the place to be inspired by what seems to be millions of user contributed colors and palettes. People are touched by colors and now they have a place to show it.

Search and be inspired. Also check out their beautiful and inspirational blog.

Free fonts

So far I've only used this site: FontSpace.com. I probably haven't looked any further because they have an amazing collection of free fonts.

Follow these instructions if you want to install new fonts in Ubuntu that you've downloaded from FontSpace.com.

Free vector graphics

I've found this great site that has all the brand logos you can think off in vector format available for download. Just search what you're looking for.

The thing is though these logos are only available in EPS format which Inkscape doesn't support. So I've found this great site that allows you to upload these EPS files and converts it to PDF format which can be imported by Inkscape. I choose to be alerted via e-mail which usually takes a few minutes.
