Tolovaj says:

It is easy to use and fun and has a lot of educational potential.

jessi says:

where do u get the movies???

Jadine says:

My daughter loves her Innotab. She can play all the games, loves the e-reader, and watches full length movies (which helps when mom is shopping). The picture quality is incredible for it's size and price. The videos are clear and the sound is great. My older son is a little envious of little sister's new toy.

Marlo says:

My daughter seems to like her InnoTab but I am taking it back because it eats batteries. I don't know what they didn't make it a chargable product like the DS. Way to expensive to be putting 4 batteries in every second day.

Dawn says:

After much deliberation, we decided to get my twin 6 year old girls the Innotab. I think it was a good choice. The 3 main reasons I went with the Innotab was 1. The MP3 player 2. You can download and play videos 3. The added memory you can purchase. My girls love them both; especially the music player.

Brandy says:

I decided to go with the Innotab for my 7 year old daughter and I'd like to clarify...YES the games for the Innotab are more expensive BUT each one comes with 3 games, an e-book, and a creative activity!

Melda says:

Innotab--hands down--"only thing missing is a camera?''--well if you read and do the "homework"---the Vtech Kidizoom camera that my son got at age 2 will be able to sync with Innotab and be used to take pictures and then be transferred to the tablet where he can touch the photos application icon and edit, add funny backgrounds or overlays etc.to it.!!--Plus the camera has games on it too!!--(this year at age 5 he is getting the Innotab)--Leappad has less apps on to begin with and the online apps cost double the price of Innotabs online apps--I bought 12 apps for only 20 bucks on the Vtech learning lodge navigator--plus the cartridges are on ebay already for way less than in stores--I got Scooby Doo and Cars for only 30 bucks!!--as for older kids--If they are already 7 or 8--I would have gone with a regular tablets-but--these kids ones are made especially for rough and tumble boys like mine--AS for Durabilty of Leapfrog versus Vtech--well we have thrown away 3--yes 3 broken Leapfrog electronic toys over the last 2 years which have lasted less than 6 months in our house--Vtech--however--we have had 6-7 different electric and electronic toys including the Cyber pocket V. SMile portable handheld game system--and the camera--which he has has since age 2 and they are still going strong--my 5 year old is 49 inches tall and 73 pounds of pure muscle and energy!--as rough and tumble Bear/Bull of a boy as they come--and I would buy Vtech over Leapfrog any day based on personal experience alone. The Vtech Kidizoom camera has withstood way more than I ever thought it could, been on trips --dropped out of car--thrown against wall and more--and still works like the day it was new!! I am an older -(over 35 mom)--and am wise enough to know that a lot of what you pay for is the Leapafrog Name--and well yes, Vtech is their competition-- but its what America is all about--the spirit of competition in business and customer service--its what attracts and keeps customers--BUT, the price is also important!!

mildred ramirez says:

The inno Tab and I believe I made a good decision

Jen Reyes says:

Glad I got my sons innotab earlier for 80 bucks. Man has the prices gone up and there are only so few stocked! When I went to get it there was no doubt that I'd go for the innotab! Both leappad and innotab were fully stocked at the walmart shelves 80 for innotab and a 100 for leappad. Just because of the price difference some people tend to go for the more expensive without even really trying to see what's best for them because they think the more the better quality. Leappad nd innotab probably both have great quality.. Yes leappad has a camera but most the time the kids are going to be more into the games and apps and to learn and read depending on age. I've read a lot that leappad is More expensive with apps and innotab is cheaper and it already comes with many great apps. I'm very happy and excited that I got my son his INNOTAB! I know that I chose the best one for my 3 year old. he will love it! :) I can't wait until he opens it cuz man does this boy drain my phones batteries.

Nashville says:

Either one is on my child's wish list. We have two children so we got one of each. But after reading and doing some research I think that we are going to try and sell the leappad and buy another Innotab. The graphics were better and the art was better and it already came with more apps than the leappad whose apps are pretty expensive. The innotab is our choice

Heather says:

hands down Innotab!! The ONLY thing missing is a camera..everything else beats out the leappad. Mine is for a 2 year old who wanted an iPad...I'm sure she won't miss the camera!

Grandpa says:

Inno Tab

Karen says:

I saw the leappad an was very very excited. However after a two day scavenger hunt i stumbled on the innotab. My daughter loves music...the bieb need i say more and shes only three! Anyhoot, after ready this very helpful blog i think im leaning towards the innotab. Help!!!

Ana says:

The leapfrog leapPad was way much, at $100 for the pad ONLY , plus the case. Also, target was having the vtech games on sale. And to be honest I could not find the leapPad so I bought the innoTab, BUT i'm glad I did because once I looked into it the innopad is wa worth it.

cheapee says:

Any electronic tablet or DS is on my daughters mind. But we went with the Innotab because we lucked up on a new one in a goodwill store for half the price. So even though it looks like most kids will want the leappad I believe any child would like either one of these. It really is a neat device when I powered it on it has several apps built in. I'm and IT person so I would prefer to buy a cheap Android tablet but that will easily break in the hands of young kids.

Tanya says:

I was leaning towards the Leapfrog, but after being sold out the last week and the outrageous prices I seen on line, I am going to get an Inno Tab. I went to Fred Meyer this morning and my daughter fell in love with the InnoTab. The price was amazing with the sales, the coupons and everything its a much better avenue for us. I found this site to be extremely helpful and would recommend the InnoTab.

Lien says:

Katrina, can you elaborate more on how you purchased them? At $130 for 2, i'm definitely choosing the Inno Tab! Affordibility means more to me.

wendy says:

i have just bought 1 of each, for my daughter and my son, i am leaning more in favour of the innotab for the education side of things. plus the online downloads are cheaper. but unfortunately it does not have a camera like the leappad, which i know my son will love taking photos, but as a bonus it does have an mp3 player built in. they have both been great fun so far.

Carleoni says:

I have bought an InnoTab for my nearly 3 year and I think he will love it, I have also bought a Leappad for my 7 year old which he will also love,.
I think the Leappad should come with better apps installed and have cheaper ones available to download as all the good ones are expensive £15-£20.

Katrina says:

I debated a lot whether to get my 4 year old twins the Innotab or the Explorer. The reviews for the Innotab seemed to be better plus the price is awesome! I went on Vtech's website, signed up for their mailing list, received 20% off of my order for doing so and ended up paying $127.98 for two! No shipping or tax either. I'm excited for the free download aps that come with it also.

Crystal says:

and FYI the v tech innotab cartridges are 19.99 at toys r us not 24.99 :)

Crystal says:

I am so happy i came on this site! I wanted the innotab from the beginning and my husband was leaning towards the leappad. Now that I know that the Innotab has the music and the movies I'm glad I was going with my gut feeling. Its educational but kids will be kids and when they are int he car they like entertainment! Thank you for all your help!! happy holidays!

busymom says:

I bought my 3 yr old son the Innotab after extensive research, mostly because of the fact that you can use SD cards on it, as well as download movies (although this is proving to be very difficult unless you are an IT specialist!). He absolutely loves it and very quickly mastered navigation. I haven't even bought an SD card for it yet, but he has spent hours just playing with the apps already on it. I also wish that it had Angry Birds...

Carmen says:

I THINK I've decided on the InnoTab but see that the LeapPad has applications that help with math and numbers. I've seen reading and tracing for the InnoTab. What about math and numbers?

Sue says:

HELP: I am thinking of getting an 8MB SD card for my daughters new innotab - in the instruction book it recommends a 4MB card but it does state that it will work with bigger SD cards, is this true? and does anyone know how many movies / photos or music tracks I should fit on a 4MB SD card?

Stasia says:

I got my son the inno tab for christmas. The screen needs recalibrated already and I have to wait up to 3 days for tech support to call me back due to the high volume of calls they are getting. Does anyone know how to recalibrate the touch screen? I am very unhappy with their customer support and my son wants to play his game. He love the inno tab, but until it gets fixed he cannot play it. Any help would be greatly appreciated. We had similart issues with his sisters leapster 2 but was able to get customer service within 10 mins. Wish I got him the leappad

Liz says:

I did a LOT of comparison shopping. I was trying to be fair even though we've had 3 Vtech products die after less than a year. Yet, we have a Leapfrog word builder that is over 2 years old still going strong, a Leapster 2 that was still working after 2 1/2 years that I just sold (since my son mastered the games), and a Tag reader that is over a year old and still working. After much debate I came to the decision of the LeapPad Explorer. Here are my personal reasons: 1) More space starting out on the LeapPad (yes, I can't expand it but my child will have PLENTY of room with 2 GB and at least he can put a lot on it without having to pay for a bigger SD card), 2)my LeapFrog products have never broken after years of use and wear and tear 3) it has a camera and video camera on it (apparently the InnoTab has an address book and calendar...ummm, how many children do you know that will use that? Not mine...he's 5 and LOVES the camera and video camera) 4) While I haven't seen the InnoTab say they do or don't have this feature, the LeapPad proudly claims that the stories grow in difficulty as the child learns more words and gets better at reading and he LOVES the Pet App it has!! 5) The stylus is tethered to the LeapPad AND still comes with an extra loose stylus as a back up or for a child who may want one that isn't tethered 6) Leapster Explorer games work with the LeapPad leaving more choices for games and expansion if you combine them with all the games and apps available on LeapFrog.com, 7) I think it says something about quality and options when the LeapPad is sold out everywhere (is was still VERY hard to get this year) and the InnoTab was in every store I walked in to...just saying. My child was given his LeapPad early because SURPRISE his Vtech MobiGo broke. No biggie, we were going to get rid of it anyway on Christmas. And he hasn't stopped playing the LeapPad for 4 days (which is when we gave it to him).

Becky says:

Joy-this is more for younger kids. I think a 9 year old would get much more use out of a ds player. It is more expensive but can be used for years.

wendy says:

both need a charger with them. the leappad is more fun, but the innotab does have some fantastic aps, it really does depend on the child. The accessires should definately be cheaper, it has worked out very exspensive, with the power mains, rechargable adapter, extra games and apps, not to mention the case.

Kam S. says:

LeapPad. My 4-yr old son has had a lot of LeapFrog products, they are all in excellent condition to pass on to his 7-month old sister. The only exception was a phonics pad game that partially melted by the on/off switch when it fell behind a heater; it defied death and still functions, but looks like it should be thrown out. I recall receiving VTech gifts, and sadly recall throwing them out after they broke. My son is not even that rough with his toys!

I find it annoying the Explorer didn't come with chargers and you have to buy them separately. But I can use rechargeable batteries and the camera & video on the Explorer is quite good, so I know it'll be good on the LeapPad. I'm not bothered by this device not having the ability to download other videos or music, this is intended to be a learning device, for entertainment there are other tools I will use.

I'm excited to get this for my son, and expecting that his sister won't break it, but push its limits.

Yvonne says:

We had originally purchased the Vtech InnoTab for my 2 kids (One device each) and upon opening the first package to set it up and install apps I will admit I was not impressed at all especially after looking at the Leapster Leap Pads on commercials. I sat back and thought about it every single Vtech item we have purchased doesn't last yet Leap Pad has been outstanding and with 4 boys total our toys have had a good work out n Leapster is great. I returned the Vtech and I'm so glad I did because I got the Leap Pads instead and upon setting them up my husband and I played on them for about 6 hours. They were fun even for adults and I know my kids are going to have a blast with these. The Inno Tab was very boring in comparison. How do you know? Well black Friday yesterday I was the 7th person to enter the store and no Leapster Leap Pads in Stock but more InnoTabs than I cared to count. That should tell you the quality as should the price. Spend the extra money or wait til after Christmas as they are basically sold out everywhere and get the Leapster Leap Pad Explorer! Well worth your dollar and very durable! Mom of 4 in Wisconsin.

El says:

I'm leaning towards the leappad, but can anyone answer this question, with the leap pad story's, it can tell your childs reading level and gets harder as needed. Does the inno tab do the same?

Nangaye says:

The LeapPad is compatible with Leapster Explorer games cartridges.

jce00 says:

does anyone know if the leapster games I already own will work with a new LeapPad?

Rick says:

I say the LeapPad. My daughter has had the Leapster Explorer for about a year now (last christmas) and it has served both myself and her very well. As a 3 year old, she has learned great phonic skills, slowly learning to read and recognize many basic vocabulary skills, She has learned how to write her entire alphabet, and generally, has done a ton on it. It is quite annoying that it didn't have any camera feature, but the LeapPad has fixed this issue, while giving her great dexterity, writing, and now a camera function so she can leave my camera alone. To fix the battery issue, I bought some high end rechargable lithium cells from sony, and swap them out. It cost about $30 for the setup, and each set lasts her about 5-6 days depending on how much she plays. I have never bought an AA battery for this game system since.

As for Vtech. . . What can I say. I have owned their phones, and had them stop functioning too early which my panasonic phones have fixed. Their kid learning stuff like the V.kid game console... my little one just didn't get into it, and when I made her she hated it. She had fun with some of the other learning games like the alphabet drawing pad, numbers game, kidizoom camera, but alas all of them lasted less than 8 months with her use, while the Explorer still is running strong with no problems (except I had to clean it out from sticky buttons which the leap pad will fix) almost a year later, I'm even planningon passing it on to a friend for her little one to use.

There is a possibility that Vtech makes great products, but I haven't experienced it too much, and I have given both their kid products and adult electronics a fighting chance, but overall, my experience with them is that they make a decent product, which has awesome features for the price ... but tends to fail in terms of longevity of product life.

Sorry for the long post, I don't want people to think I'm randomly making a vote. I have tried products from both companies, and I will side with the Leapster name any day. They have become this successful for a reason, and other companies are copying the benchmark to try and dethrone them.

Colleen Winn says:

I have a set of 9 year old twins boys that i am thinking about getting the LeapPad for and then my 3 year old daughter the InnoTab.. Im wondering if there is enough for the twins to do on the LeapPad or not?? I hope that my 3 year old is not to young for the InnoTab!! Its a lot of money to spen but its worth it if these are as good as they say they are.. Thanks Colleen

Pam (mom of TT&E) says:

I'm getting them both! I have two children a boy and a girl, my son is very much into music and while he loves picture too he likes viewing photos more so than taking photos so he's getting the InnoTab for the mp3 and the sd card reader feature. My daughter on the other hand is not as much into music but loves taking photos and will no doubt love shooting videos so she's getting the LeapPad and I'm sure at some point they'll swap devices and experience the best of both products. But for the sake of this topic I'll choose LeapPad becuse it's quality is tried and true.

Carrie says:

Vtech quality typically is not as good as LeapPad though I am not completely sold on either yet. It is a lot of money so I will be doing a little more research but jsut to clarify a few things I did find out from the Q/A section on Leapfrogs site on the LeapPad are:
It does no have expandable memory but:
Do you know if the memory will be expandable? For example, will I be able to purchase a separate SDHC flash memory card to increase the memory capabilities? The memory on the LeapPad is not expandable, but the device includes 2 GB of memory built in – this is enough memory to hold 30,000 pictures or over 2 hours of video, or 30+ apps.

In addition to the content that you can store on board the device, the LeapPad is compatible with the full library of Leapster Explorer cartridge games for additional play on the go.

Also it does work with headphones.

I am still doing more research. I am dissappointed that the LeapPad won't accept I-Tunes Music and doesn't have expandable storage space.

Mark says:

Both. Yep that's right. Both. I couldn't decide, so I bought the InnoTab for my 3 yr old and the LeapPad for my 7 yr old. I will let everybody else know how they perform side by side, ofcourse this won't happen until after Christmas.

Nangaye says:

Hi Aundrea, thanks for your comments - this debate is looking a little more even now!
Anyway, just to clarify a couple of points for you. The cost of the InnoTab game cartridges is $24.99. LeapPad cartridges are similarly priced. Individual InnoTab apps downloaded from Vtech start at $2.99.
The on-board storage of the LeapPad is 2GB.
I hope this helps you decide, I can only agree in that it's a tough decision.
Thanks again,
Steve

Aundrea says:

I'm leaning toward the leappad for a couple reasons:
1. The camera. Outweighing the mp3 function the innotab has. My kids have mp3 players and For us, that just makes sense.
2. Size. I looked at them both side by side in the store, and the leap pad has the same size screen in a smaller housing.
3. I have yet to have anything I have purchased from leapfrog break. Although, to be fair, we have our one and only vtech gadget, and that is still functional.
4. The apps can be shared on 2 leappads. I couldn't find any info on whether or not the innotab has that capability, but if you are buying for 2 kiddos, it definitely was an important feature for us.
5. The apps are less expensive. Innotabs are all 24.99 each. Leap pad had varying ranges from $5 to $20. I'm sure it will add up quickly either way, but I know leap pad can share on 2 devices, and at a cheaper rate to start with, a big selling point for me.
6. The stylus is tethered.
7. Storage on the leap pad is 20G, and innotab is 64Mg. Even though I can add storage to the innotab, I highly doubt my kids are going to come close to the max on the leap pad. And if the do, I can always upload it to my computer
and start fresh.

I just need to compare the screens

Nangaye says:

There seems to be some confusion arising in these posts as to whether or not the stylus has to be used with the LeapPad, i.e. it is not a touch-screen device.
This is incorrect. The LeapPad is a touch-screen device, and you can see this in action in the LeapFrog video below.
There is at least one stylus supplied with both these devices, which would be used for some of the apps and games, or as an alternative for fingers covered in peanut butter, jelly, etc!
Hope this helps clear things up, and thanks for visiting.
Steve

Judy says:

This is a hard one. After reading your reviews, I'm leaning towards buying the LeapFrog LeapPad for my granddaughter, although the Vtech Inno Tab has the MP3 player. Both of my grandchildren love to play with the camera on my daughter's i-Pad and alter the pictures. They spend hours doing this. The built-in camera feature is probably going to be the winning factor for making the LeapFrog LeapPad my choice.

Heather says:

I went with leapfrog. I have faith in the quality they deliver. My 3 yr old daughter can work my android smartphone better then me!! Now we don't have to share, come Christmas she'll have her own :)

Mandy says:

I am buying my kids the LeapPad. We have about 9 leapfrog products with some being 6yrs old and all are still working properly. We have 4 vtech products and only 1 of them will turn on at all. The vsmile handheld was constantly breaking and the one that went with the tv quit working a month after purchase. I Do wish it had the mp3 player but I feel better investing in the quality of lepfrog.

LeapFrog LeapPad Explorer Learning Tablet

LeapPad Explorer

"Kids of all ages love tablets, but not every tablet is suitable for fingers covered in peanut butter and jelly. We're thinking the latest from LeapFrog would handle that situation without complaint and, with its chunky construction, should make it home undamaged after show and tell."
(Endgadget.com Technical Expert Review)

The LeapFrog LeapPad Explorer Learning Tablet was launched in August 2011, one month before the Vtech InnoTab. LeapFrog are another award-winning manufacturer of electronic learning toys, so these two companies really are going head-to-head.

The look, the approach to interactivity, the apps and the specifications of both tablets are largely the same. In reality, you would expect this from similar devices. However, each tablet has one or two features that make them unique.

When it comes down to it, the choice between the Vtech InnoTab and the LeapPad Explorer may well be just a preference based on experience of other toys from the same manufacturer. Personally, I wouldn't be able to decide because I think they are both great and have so much to offer.

A look at some of the technical specifications of the LeapFrog LeapPad Explorer:
  • 5" color touch screen, 480x272 pixel resolution.
  • In-built camera with video recording capability, embedded microphone.
  • Tilt-sensor for portrait or landscape viewing.
  • 2GB onboard memory.
  • Connects to PC/Mac with included USB cable.

Learning Apps on the LeapFrog LeapPad:

  • Pet Pad

This is the only one of the four apps supplied with the LeapPad that is pre-loaded onto the tablet. This game app allows children to create their own pet and then care for their pet by feeding it and bathing it. Children can teach their pet tricks by learning to write different letters.

  • Story Studio

This app can be downloaded at no additional cost when you first download the LeapFrog Connect application then connect and register your LeapPad. Story Studio lets children create their own stories about themselves using the photos, art and audio they create, including pictures from the in-built camera and audio from the embedded microphone.

  • Art Studio

Another app which can be downloaded at no additional cost when you first download the LeapFrog Connect application then connect and register your LeapPad. Children can unleash the budding artist in themselves when drawing and creating their own masterpieces.

  • Downloads

Sync to any PC or Mac with the included USB cable. Once connected to the web, you can easily download even more games, eBooks, apps, and other fun activities from LeapFrog's online Learning Path. Parents can also use the Learning Path to check their child's progress and track achievements. Parents can choose to receive regular e-mail updates on their child's accomplishments, which provide insight into where the child may need additional support, and then providing new ideas for even more learning fun.

“What people are saying about the LeapFrog LeapPad Explorer”

LeapFrog LeapPad Explorer"One of the coolest things about the LeapPad is all of the things that allows my son to be creative."
(Amazon Review)

"We brought this for our daughters 6th birthday and it's brilliant she loves it! Takes photos videos plays games and lots more."
(Argos, UK Review)

"If you are thinking of purchasing a good educational toy this is one you will want to consider. Putting the price aside, my girls have learned so much from the leapfrog games that they got with their explorer and since we can continue to use them and add some to our library, the learning is going to be endless."

Do you think that both of these are better as a learning tool for preschoolers or I can use the IPAD for the same tasks?
  • Nangaye Mar 30, 2012 @ 1:04 pm | delete
    Hi HealthierTips, good question.
Well... it all depends on the needs and abilities of the children. My opinion is that these are both great devices that would definitely give preschoolers a head start. If you check out the Vtech and LeapFrog websites, they describe the developmental benefits of the games and apps that are available.
However, many parents who already own an iPad may choose to find apps for it that provide enough of a resource for preschool education. It's all about weighing up the options and deciding which is better in the long run, as you should also consider how much mileage you hope to get out of the device.
    Thanks for the contribution,
    Steve

Karen, I hope you bought the extra warranty (is good for anything electronic) but I wasn't impressed with the one time I called customer service with leap frog and had to be firm with the guy who wasn't listening to me to answer a question I had and told him to stay quiet and listen before responding, only then my question was answered properly. He might have been in a bad mood.

Keep your faith with leap frog products as I have bought vtech things in the past and they never made a year and there was never any extra warrenties to purchase as well and even jumping through the hoops with vtech, Products were never replaced by them. Since then I never looked back.

Hi I purchased my daughters leap pad for a Christmas Present. She started using it right away, then she stop for a couple of weeks. Now when she want's to play with it the screen doesn't respond. Does anyone know how good of costumer service leap frog is? Has this happened to anyone else? I am very Disappointed with the product.
  • Sara Mar 17, 2012 @ 4:22 pm | delete
Same situation - although no break in usage. The screen doesn't respond exactly 90-days after purchasing.

Hello, I live in Mexico and my son is 6 years old, I give her a tablet, and has the Vtech camera and Kiddizoom of this if you have the Spanish language, also has the option Innotab the Spanish language?.
  • Tolovaj Jan 18, 2012 @ 11:58 pm | delete
Both deices are great. I think best option is to try both and after that decide which is better buy for specific costumer. Thank you for interesting resources!

Hi I bought my 2 year old son the Leappad (which he loves by the way, kids are WAY too tech savvy nowadays) but I found out like everyone else that it eats up batteries like crazy. After searching every store in my area I couldn't find the AC adapter for the Leappad but I did find one for the Innotab, my question is will it work with the Leappad? I didn't want to buy a generic one or one compatible with more powerful devices thinking it might burn out the Leappad. I'm I ok with this AC adapter?
  • Nangaye Jan 8, 2012 @ 6:22 am | delete
Hi Vivi, thanks for your question.
No, my advice would be not to use the InnoTab adapter on the LeapPad. As far as I'm aware, there isn't a specific adapter for the LeapPad, but it is compatible with the LeapFrog Leapster adapter.
    Hope this helps.

how can I recalibrate the screen on the inno tab. Only had this for 4 days and when I called tech support, they took my phone number and said someone will call in the next three days. Please help
  • Nangaye Jan 8, 2012 @ 6:33 am | delete
    Hi Stasia,
Apologies for not getting back sooner with a response, but holidays have gotten in the way...
The instruction manual for the InnoTab should tell you how to to reset the tablet to its factory settings. However, you may find that since the calibration is off, this is easier said than done as you could find it hard to type correctly.
Keep trying Vtech technical support on this one, because I've heard a number of people having the same issue and other than a reset, there may be an alternative solution.
If you have already solved this and are reading my reply here, then please get back with how you fixed this frustrating problem, as other visitors to this site would find it useful.
    Thank you very much Stasia,

I think the Innotab is the "must have" for this Christmas. It seems to be out of stock everywhere at the moment. I was thinking of getting one for my daughter but I'll probably wait until after Christmas in the hope that they'll be on sale then.

Hi...I've been reading the comments and I must say I am torn...I have a 3yr old girl who LOVES to play games on mommy and daddys phones/ipod...I had my mind made up for the leap pad and was going to wait to see if anyone just so happened to have a great sale on it for black friday...then of course it was sold out before it came...I'm just wondering if anyone has the slightest idea if the stores may get some back in before Christmas? I have already bought 2games for it. So now that the Leap pad is sold out I'm wondering if I should jst go for the innotab. I really want her to have it in time for Christmas. Thanks so much!

  • maria Dec 8, 2011 @ 9:54 am | delete
If you get the Innotab you can download movies, you can change the SD card to a higher capability.
  • Erin Dec 9, 2011 @ 1:56 pm | delete
Is there a limit on how high of capacity you can put in the SD slot?
  • Nangaye Dec 10, 2011 @ 6:00 am | delete
    Hi Erin,
The InnoTab will take SD and SDHC cards. If I remember correctly, the user manual says up to 8GB, but I've heard of people using 16GB and even 32GB without any problems.
    Thanks for visiting.

I was thinking of buy one of these for my almost 7 yr old. However, I am seeing alot of purchases for 3-6 yr olds. Do you think that she is too old for it?
  • Nangaye Dec 8, 2011 @ 3:07 pm | delete
Hi Erika, thanks for the question.
It all kinda depends on how tech savvy your 7-year old is. You have to weigh up wether either of these devices would be suitable in comparison to an 'adult' tablet device (with an Android operating system, for example). So, I think the decision might possibly be between one of these devices and something else.
As with all visitors here with similar concerns, you also need to think about how much mileage you will get from the tablet. For an InnoTab or LeapPad, I would personally hope that my kids got at least two years worth out of it.
I hope this helps a bit, and thanks for visiting.

I went Innotab. After seeing many reviews on both it just seemed like the better choice. It has a better response time and can add memory. Plus the whole nnot having a camera thing doesn't matter cause you can still view them on an innotab. Aslo it comes with more apps. I just think you get more bang for your buck.
  • G. Pope Dec 7, 2011 @ 2:52 pm | delete
Just received the Innotab and trying to set everything up for Christmas. Downloaded the Learning Lodge Navigator. A tab on top of the homescreen said I had to download Adobe Flash player. Went through all the prompts, downloaded latest Flash player. Still the screen is covered by a tab stating I need Adobe Flash Player. I've uninstalled both the Learning Lodge and Flash player and re-installed 3 times on two different computers. Disabled the anti-virus in case that was blocking something and talked to Vtech tech support three times(no help and no ideas). Still when I open the Learning Lodge Navigator, I get the tab superimposed on top of Learning Lodge that says I must have Flash Player to use Learning Lodge.
As it is, I cannot access any downloads, free or otherwise, from V Tech Kids. Thinking of returning everything and going to Leap Pad.

    Any ideas?

hi, i just read all the coments and i clarified my mind. I just have a cuestion, we are mexican(so, sorry about my writing mistakes) and we came here 2 months ago, i have a boy 4 years old he doesnt speak english and i would like to buy him some tap, or anything that you suggest, that help him to learn your language easier and dont be hard his first schoolyear.
  • Nangaye Dec 8, 2011 @ 2:36 pm | delete
Hi Maria, thank you for visiting.
I think that either of these tablets would be good for a 4-year old to help with learning English. If you visit the Vtechkids and LeapFrog websites, you will be able to see many of the learning e-books and games they have for each one. You can then look at the games and e-books that you think may be suitable to help him learn.
You should consider some of the learning games and e-books aimed at 4-6 years old and maybe something that includes his favorite cartoon characters, so that he has something familiar to start with.
I've had a few questions like this before, and would welcome other visitors in similar situations to share their experiences here.
Thanks again Maria, and I hope you all have a great Christmas.

Does anyone know if it's possible to transfer a photo from my computer to the leappad?
  • Nangaye Dec 8, 2011 @ 2:20 pm | delete
Hi Star537, thanks for the question.
Unfortunately, the LeapPad doesn't really allow for the transfer of media content from home computers in the same way that the InnoTab does. I think this is partly due to the fact that you can store those photos, music, video on the SD card, which is a functionality that the LeapPad lacks.
I don't know if any of the other visitors here have found a work-around for this, if it's possible, but from what I've found you are restricted to only being able to transfer LeapFrog media (including photos taken with the LeapPad itself) to and from a pc.
I hope this helps, and thanks again for the question.

I read a few question on the site that were not answered and Im curious. First I read that on the leap pad you could DL you childrens spelling lists (not sure if this is true or not) but if it is can you also do this on the innotab.
    2. is there some type of protective screen you can place ont he screen like you can with an iphone?
  • Nangaye Dec 6, 2011 @ 3:57 pm | delete
Hi Nicole, thanks for the questions.
In answer to the first one, yes, you can customize some of the LeapPad games by adding your own spelling lists and even math skills. As for the InnoTab, I'm not sure about this. Again, it would be game based, but my advice here would be to check with Vtech directly. They'd be able to tell you whether any of their current apps included this functionality, or whether there were forthcoming releases for this.
In answer to your second question, also yes, there are screen protectors available for both the InnoTab and the LeapPad. You should be able to find these online, I know that you can currently get them through Amazon.
I hope this helps a bit, and thanks again Nicole.

is this good for 3yr old to help them learn
  • Nangaye Dec 6, 2011 @ 3:36 pm | delete
Hi Lil' Gal, thanks for the question.
Yes, I'd say that either of these would be ideal for helping a 3-year old learn. If you check out the manufacturer's websites you'll be able to see some of the games and apps that are available. Along with a description of the app/game, they also give some details about their learning and developmental benefits.
Hope this helps, and thanks for visiting.

does the leappad work well for left handed children. my 5yr old daughter is left handed and I do not want to hinder her writing by getting this if it is geared toward right handers..
  • Nangaye Dec 5, 2011 @ 1:12 pm | delete
Hi Jackie, this is a really good question that hasn't been asked here before.
I'd like to open this up to other visitors, who may have experience of this already.
But, from a usage point of view, I see no reason why the LeapPad would not be just as suitable for left-handed children as those that are right-handed. The only thing that I can think of that might introduce some bias would be the learning apps, and whether they'd been developed from a certain perspective.
Otherwise, can anyone else help Jackie here? If any visitors have something to share, then please feel free to contribute. Thank you, and thanks again Jackie.
    Steve
  • Lori Jan 31, 2012 @ 6:56 pm | delete
My son is certainly preferring his left hand and he uses his leapPad with no issues at all. I'm a parent who is wanting to support his left handedness, not one who wants to change it.

Hi, do any of the pads have an in-built German language setting? Or is it English only? And what about the conventional AA batteries? Can they not be replaced by an accumulator? It seems somewhat rudimentary for a toy that only came out this year and is not inexpensive?!
  • Nangaye Dec 5, 2011 @ 1:00 pm | delete
Hi Laura, thanks for the questions.
Both these tablets require AA batteries or will operate from an AC adapter. The batteries themselves can be regular ones (use once) or rechargeables. If using rechargeables, then they will need to be removed from the device beforehand and charged separately. Neither the InnoTab or LeapPad currently incorporate a fixed rechargeable battery so that they could be charged like a cell phone, for example.
As for German language versions, as far as I'm aware both devices only support variations on English (US/UK) and French (I think - not 100% certain on this). My only advice would be to contact the manufacturers directly and find out if they support German language. You may find that particular language settings may be specific to the country of purchase and that not all devices support all of the languages. Again, you'd need to check details like this with both Vtech and LeapFrog.
I hope this helps and thank you for visiting.

We have just bought rechargeable batteries as a quick solution to the battery 'eating' problem. I have chosen fairly expensive rechargeables with a good reputation (Energizers) and so far, have been very happy with the usage, versus buying great quality standard batteries.

Similar question to others, but not quite the same. My 13 yr old has an Ipod touch, my 10 yr old has a Nintendo DSi, My 7 yr old has used them both with no problem and he also plays and learns on the laptop with no problem. So, my question is, for a 7yr old boy who is kind of tech saavy and loves to read, play games, do the learning apps and watch movies, is either the Innotab or Leapster a good choice or should i get him something with more advanced features and options? If something more advanced, can u offer suggestions? thanks
  • Sue Dec 2, 2011 @ 10:59 am | delete
If you want my advice your 7 yr old will get bored with these if he is use to the other high tech things. Invest in something high tech, maybe a cheap tablet with android market or something like that. or buy him his own dsi.

I purchased the vtech innotab after reading many customer comments for my daughters birthday in November. I REGRET buying this I wish I would have bought the leap pad. The screen scratches very easy...if you do decide to get this I would highly recommend getting two sets of rechargeable AA batteries and a charger because the batteries last 10 or less hours also buy a big SD card it fills up fast. I feel that If I would have bought the leap pad she'd play more with it. She has already lost interest in the game system. Overall I do beleive it was a waste of my money.

Hi Amanda, thanks for sharing your experiences here.
I'm sorry to hear that the InnoTab hasn't really worked out for your daughter. But you've provided some more information to help other visitors make their mind up on which tablet device is the best buy.
I'm also really glad that you posted this because although both devices have many positive aspects, they will undoubtedly have a few weaknesses as well. Assessing against these is just another factor to be considered in the decision-making process.
I hope you have a more successful Christmas, in terms of gifts for your daughter, and thanks again Amanda for contributing to this site.
