Welcome to the Insider Internet Radio Show where we look at mental treatment from the view point of both consumers and practitioners.

Whether you are a consumer looking for a therapist or a young therapist trying to open your own practice, negotiating the complicated mental health maze is difficult. It surely would help if you had a guide or insider to show you the ropes. The Insider Internet Radio Show is designed to do just that. Each show will discuss a topic critical to both consumers and professionals such as confidentiality, fees, records and who can see them and many others. We will examine the laws and standards of practice that protect consumers and that therapists are bound to uphold.

Albert Einstein once said, any theory worth anything should be able to be explained in a manner that a reasonably intelligent 10 year old child can understand. Therefore practitioners need to learn to explain what they do and can do in plain simple language.

We will have invited guests including other professionals and consumer advocates and listeners can invite themselves and ask to be on a show to discuss an topic of concern. Do you have a topic or issue you want to discuss? Contact Dr. Riolo at johnr@psychjourney.com

 Who am I?

Over thirty years ago, I entered the helping professions as an advocate for the homeless. I soon moved on to clinical practice, obtaining a PhD and to higher education with a hand in research. I have worked for psychiatric hospitals, HMOs clinics, colleges and in private practice But wherever I worked and whatever the specific responsibilities I have always combined clinical practice with advocacy in one way or another. I happen to believe that good clinical practice and advocacy can and in fact must go together. I believe that to be helpful one must address someone's private troubles, however every private trouble is also an example of a public issue. Doing one without the other is only half the job.

Over the years I have been both an advocate for my colleagues and consumers exposing abuses of managed care as well abuses by professionals in the mental health field. In short I call it like I see it.
