Through the many years I suffered with chronic insomnia, Along the way I met and made friends with fellow sufferers on a internet forum. SHere's a few causes of and tips used as cures for insomnia:
1) Stress: Easily the number one Cause of insomnia, trying to sleep while worrying about the bills, or weather that assignment will be finished on time will only lead to another night of counting sheep.

2) Bad eating habits and a poor diet: One of the most important b> Foods eaten at the wrong times can effect your sleep cycle and cause insomnia, so too can having the wrong kind of diet.
Cure it: Ideally you should aim to Eat 5 small meals a day. Avoid eating for at least 2 hours before bed. As for the types of foods, Eat plenty of fruits and veg, avoid red meat and stick to white meats instead. Whole grain foods are good too (cereals, bread, pasta). Also keep yourself well hydrated by drinking 2 litres of water a day. You could even try a nice warm glass of milk each night.
3) Lack of exercise: Not getting enough exercise during your awake hours prevents your body's temperature from rising properly which is a key ingredient for when to feel wide awake and when to feel sleepy.
Cure it: Getting the right amount of exercise as long been suggested as one of the best cures for insomnia. I'm not demanding you go make a membership at your local gym. A 30 minute walk or maybe a little ride on a bike. Moderate exercise like this should help keep your internal temperature rising as it should. Avoid though exercising up to 3 hours before going to bed.
4) Body Toxins: These include cigarettes, alcohol and drugs or anything else that doesn't belong been in your body. Toxins in the body are a cause of insomnia because when we are supposed to be relaxed going to sleep, our body is working overtime trying to flush out the toxins doing harm to us.
Cure it: If your suffering from chronic insomnia, or any type of sleep disorders. Then ask yourself which is more important, getting a good nights sleep and helping as a cure for insomnia or poisoning your body?? I think you know the answer. If it is a serious addiction you have, then seek help. There are people out there who want to help you beat your addiction. I know as i've been there myself (see number 5 below)
5) Sleeping pills: Maybe sleeping pills should be in the above catergory but because of my own experience I wanted to highlight the dangers of them. Too many doctors give sleeping pills and other pills as perfect cures for insomnia, but nothing could be more wrong. At first you wonder how you ever managed without them those first few weeks/months worth of sleep is pure bliss, but it doesn't take long for a tolerance to build and your needing twice-three times the original dosage. You also pretty quickly become addicted to sleeping pills and the withdrawal from them are just HELL.
Cure it: In the case of sleeping pills, prevention is a lot better than the cure. If its too late and your already taking them, seek out help from a trained drugs councellor. And above all GOOD LUCK.
