Insomnia Solutions | You Don't Always Need A Doctor!

Insomnia is not something you need to loose sleep over!

It is a serious condition, to be sure, but serious insomnia solutions exist. And, they don't always come from your Doctor!

The truth is, however, that insomnia is not a disease in itself! Rather, it is the result of something else that is wrong with your body, and the only true insomnia solutions are those that eliminate the underlying cause. Doing that one thing will cause your insomnia to go away naturally.

Here we are going to examine some of those underlying problems that will cause insomnia, and see what we can do to find insomnia solutions for all of them...

The 3 Categories of Insomnia 

Health professionals have determined that there are 3 major types of insomnia:

  • Transient, or mild, insomnia is temporary and normally lasts less than one week, with no sign of any resulting daytime fatigue or dysfunction.

  • Short-Term Insomnia lasts from 1 week to 1 month and will probably have some affect on your daytime functioning. Often, it is also accompanied by fatigue and irritability.

  • Chronic Insomnia causes sleep problems for more than a month, can severely impair your daytime functioning, and is most likely accompanied by strong feelings of restlessness, irritability, anxiety, and fatigue.


Some underlying causes are common to all three types, but, more often than not, the more serious the insomnia, the more serious the problem causing it.

As I've stated before, insomnia is the result of another condition in your body. In short, something else is wrong! For the most part, you're likely to find the cause in one of these areas:

Temporary Events include things such as jet lag, a shift change at work, noise, an argument with a loved one, or, even too much caffeine or liquor. Usually these things cause transient insomnia that will go away in a short time.

Melatonin is Mother nature's gift to sleep. The melatonin level in your system at any given time is directly responsible for your ability to fall asleep easily, and, more importantly, to stay asleep.

Melatonin regulates your circadian rhythm, or sleep cycle. As melatonin levels rise, you become drowsy and fall asleep easily. Conversely, low levels of the hormone make falling asleep more difficult (if not impossible), and, if you do fall asleep, staying asleep for any decent period of time is out of the question.

Mother Nature, in Her infinite wisdom, designed your pineal gland so that it is actually stimulated by darkness and suppressed when you are in the light. This is Her way of telling you that you are supposed to sleep during the nighttime hours, and to be awake and productive during the day.

And, if you're a farmer, I'm sure this works very well...

But, for the rest of us, staying on Mother Nature's timetable is difficult, if not impossible.

Insomnia Solutions | The Causes Of Low Melatonin Levels 

Low levels of melatonin are caused by a number of factors, the two most common being:

  • Age: Melatonin levels produced in the pineal gland naturally decrease as we age. This is a normal body function, and some researchers believe it is the reason that seniors go to sleep earlier and wake up earlier than they did in their younger years.

  • Light and Dark: The pineal gland is stimulated by darkness and releases more melatonin in a dark environment. If, however, you are somewhere that has a high level of light (working late, etc.) during the evening or night hours, melatonin levels will remain low, and insomnia could result.


Well...as for age, there's not a whole lot we can do about that (except, of course, pray that we get a lot older!).

And, as for our day-to-day schedule, if you find that you must work (or play) at night and sleep during the day, make sure that your home is dark when you get there. Perhaps putting blackout curtains on your windows is all you need. At any rate, being in a dark environment will stimulate melatonin production and help you to sleep.
