Natural Insomnia Cures

It is thought that around one in every 4 people suffers from insomnia. That's an awful lot of sleepless nights.

If you go to your doctor, chances are that they will recommend a medicine to help you sleep. Of course, if your insomnia symptoms persist you should obviously get a check-up.

But there are lots of natural insomnia cures which work to cure insomnia and don't have the side effects associated with most pills and potions.

Before you start to take an insomnia cure, here are some tips that may help you get to sleep completely naturally:
  • Go to bed at the same time each night. Your body likes routine. Help it to know that it's time for bed by keeping to a routine.

  • Is anything else disrupting you? Stress, worry, depression, anxiety, that kind of thing. If so, work on that and you'll likely find your insomnia will go away at the same time.

  • Cut down on the caffeine, alcohol and nicotine. Cut down gradually. Don't drink coffee, cola or tea shortly before you go to sleep. And skip the nightcap or glass of wine - you'll benefit from less disruption when you do get to sleep.

  • Get regular exercise. This can be going to the gym if you like doing that but equally it can just be a brisk walk during the day. Don't exercise late at night though.

  • Take up a relaxation technique such as yoga or meditation. These will help your body relax and help relieve the stresses we get in our modern lives.

  • Keep your bedroom cool and make sure your curtains don't let any light in either, so your bedroom is dark.

  • If your feet get cold, wear socks in bed!

  • If you really can't get to sleep, stop trying so hard. Take a break and do something else that will take your mind off - often we stress ourselves out and think we can't get to sleep, which then becomes a self fulfilling prophecy.

  • Get hold of some relaxing music to help you get to sleep.

Give these tips a trial to see whether they'll be a completely natural insomnia cure for you.

More Ways To Cure Insomnia

My personal favorite way of falling asleep is to listen to a meditation track at bed time. I find it relaxes me and sets me up for a good night's sleep.

Other people prefer to use a specially designed sleep CD, based on techniques discovered by a German research scientist way back in 1839.

An unconventional way of curing your insomnia is the onion cure for insomnia:
  • Cut up an onion and place the pieces in a jar.

  • When you go to sleep, open the jar, sniff the onion and then close the jar again.

  • I've not tried it personally, but it's reckoned you'll fall asleep with the onion cure in less than 15 minutes.

Some more ways to cure your insomnia naturally:
  • Take a nice, long, relaxing bath before you go to sleep.

  • Drink a glass of warm milk. Many people find this relaxing even though scientists have no idea why.

  • Stretch and yawn before going to sleep.

  • Let your thoughts drift. A bit like a watched kettle never boils, it's the same with sleep. The more you concentrate on "I must go to sleep" the less likely you are to actually drift off.

  • Take long, slow, deep breaths. These will help your body to relax and slow you down, making it easier to get to sleep.

Alternative Cures For Insomnia

EFT or Emotional Freedom Technique is another way to cure your insomnia.

At first, EFT may sound a weird thing to do. You tap various points on your body with your finger. At the same time you concentrate on what's bothering you (your insomnia in this case, but EFT works for lots of other things as well).

After a set amount of "taps" you move onto the next point and repeat the process.

The whole sequence is described in a lot of detail for free at this website.

And there's a very complete EFT program here.

EFT works with the same pressure points as acupuncture and acupressure. It's not as precise as these techniques but surprisingly that doesn't matter. So watch the video below to see how to tap your insomnia away using EFT.

Personally I sleep better by using earplugs to not have to hear the noise outside.
