I never count sheep, but I totally agree with Tip #1 - exercise does make a big difference. In Western society today people don't get enough exercise and instead depend on pills to help them get to sleep.

Sleep and Why It is So Important to Health

Do you know why we need to have a good night's sleep?

The average number of hours of sleep is generally considered to be 8 hours per day. However some people sleep for longer whilst others may function successful on 4 or 5 hours of sleep.

Why do we need sleep though? Here are some research that explains why sleep is so important to us.

1) Healing and sleep. When we sleep, and as the body rests, so our healing immune system can do some of their best work to repair damage and fight infection.

2) Sleep and mood. A lack of sleep leads to that tired feeling and our stress levels increase making us irritable and snappy.

3) Sleep helps the memory. During sleep our minds organise and compound our memories.

4) REM and sleep. A vital part of sleep is the REM or Rapid Eye Movement phase. Deprivation of this phase for extended periods of time can lead to mental instability.

5) Metabolism and sleep. Sleep helps metabolism. Insomnia affects the release of hormones which in turn alters our appetite.

As sleep is so vital, it is important to act on any early signs that sleep problems are turning into insomnia. The sooner you do something about sleep disturbance the more likely you are to resolve it.

Why Do We Need Sleep?

What happens when we sleep?

Sleep is not an optional part of a lifestyle. Sleep is a necessity. Sleeping is vital for our physical and mental abilities.

Most adults need 8 hours sleep to feel like they have benefitted. This is an average figure and some people need more and some less. Generally as you get older the less sleep you are likely to need if you are an active person.

Intereestingly, sleeping for too long can lead to a feeling of lethargy. So there is a balance between too much and not enough sleep.

There is also a connection between depression and insomnia.

Insomnia Wikipedia

Insomnia is a symptom of a sleeping disorder characterized by persistent difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep despite the opportunity. Insomnia is a symptom, not a stand-alone diagnosis or a disease. By definition, insomnia is "difficulty initiating or maintaining sleep, or both" and it may be due to inadequate quality or quantity of sleep. It is typically followed by functional impairment while awake. Both organic and non-organic insomnia constitute a sleep disorder.

According to the United States Department of Health and Human Services in the year 2007, approximately 64 million Americans regularly suffer from insomnia each year. Insomnia is 1.4 times more common in women than in men.
