The Effects Of Insomnia

Insomnia is quite a serious disorder because it changes moods, makes people drowsy during the day leading to decreased productivity, and it can cause accidents as people lose concentration driving or operating machineries. If you are suffering from insomnia don't get frustrated, depressed or desperate. You can do something to help you bring back real sleep and rest in your life.

Practical Insomnia Tips

The following is a list of practical insomnia tips you can do to help yourself.

1. Set a fixed pattern for your sleeping and waking up hours. This means going to bed and getting up at the same time each day including weekends.

2. Create a good sleeping environment. Reduce light as much as possible in your bedroom. Reduce noise or have it lessened as much as possible. The room temperature should not be too hot nor too cold. Room temperature should be moderate.

3. Make a regular bedtime ritual. This is to make an association in the brain and body to sleeping time. These ritual can be as simple as brushing your teeth, checking door locks or turning the all the lights off.

4. Do an activity that will make your body more relaxed before going to bed. Taking a warm bath, having a massage or doing breathing exercises will do.

5. Don't try to sleep or force yourself to sleep. Wait for sleep to come and in the meantime read a book or watch TV until sleep comes.

6. Avoid caffeine, alcohol and smoking. These interfere with sleep. Smoking and caffeine keeps the brain very active because they are stimulants while alcohol will put you to sleep but not the restive sleep you need. You will feel worse when you wake up with alcohol.

7. Listen to slow, soft music. Instrumental music is recommended.

8. Eat dinner at least 4 hours before bedtime and don't eat a heavy meal. Having a light snack before bedtime is known to aid in falling asleep.

9. If you do a lot of physical activities during the day make it a point to slow down towards the end of the day to have your body and mind slow down as well.

10. Schedule a time with your doctor for a general check up to make sure you are not suffering from other health problems.

The above are insomnia tips you can do to help yourself practically to have the sleep and rest you need. Unless you are suffering from other physical ailments these tips can be very helpful. Most insomniacs just need a little adjustment in lifestyle and know how to manage stress.
