The Inspirational Power of Children

Following five great business years (property development and real estate) our local market took a significant nosedive and is still struggling to this day. Many of our friends and colleagues have had no alternative but to give up.

We have struggled on for the last three years and I have to admit that there have been times when I have had to fight back the tears wondering why our life had become so difficult and would we ever get our normal life back.

In this despair, what I was failing to recognize and appreciate was the "priceless" value of the love, strength and inspiration that was and is my family

Our daughter Alexandra has just started University in Scotland. Financially, it was tough to make it happen but we managed with some help. To say I (we) miss her terribly would be an understatement.

Christmas update - Alex is home with us for Christmas and New Year and it's a joy to have her home.

The best way I can explain why and how Alexandra is an inspiration to us and to others is by sharing with you a short piece my husband wrote a while back for the Warrior Forum.

The Inspirational Power Of Children

"Stay with me for a minute while I take you on a journey of hope, courage and determination.

Imagine you are standing in an intensive care unit looking down at a 6 month old baby girl who has bacterial meningitis.

As this little girl's temperature continues to spike, all around her fear for her life.

After 21 very long days and very long nights, the little girl has fought back and through her courage has survived her huge ordeal.

Now imagine a very happy, laughing six foot six hospital consultant sitting on the floor with this little girl who has made a full recovery. Or has she?

Her parents were delighted that not only had she survived, there were no apparent mental or physical side effects which, sadly, all too often accompany meningitis.

Everything was great. The lovely little girl grew, began walking, began talking then at 3 years old the little girl's parents were stunned with the news that she was partially deaf. Her speech was perfect, she understood everything that was being said to her. So How?

She had been lip reading without her parents realizing it.

Fast forward 7 years and the girl finds herself going to school in a foreign country with no knowledge of the language, trying to learn subjects taught in that language.

With her parents help, she works hard spending 3 to 4 hours every night doing homework and studying until she is totally fluent in this new language.

The not so little girl now transfers to an international college and spends 5 years studying, passing her exams and preparing to gain entrance to university majoring in Sports and English.

Remember that frail little six month old baby left partially deaf as a result of meningitis.

She is now 17 years old, a beautiful young lady and has had 5 university offers out of six.

This young lady inspires me every day and I am her very proud father."

Lewis, our 15 year old son, does not share the same academic enthusiasm as his sister. I can tell you, however, this is more than compensated by his powerful can do attitude and his self belief. He continues to astound us with his guitar and saxophone playing (self taught) and his prowess on the golf course (just don't remind his dad).

Christmas update - Lewis started to get some guitar lessons from his "Maths" teacher focusing on Spanish and Flamenco styles. The great news is that he will be accompanying his teacher at the next school concert.

Even just writing this now, helps me to appreciate the gifts we have been given.

Andrew, my husband, has been a personal and business coach for a number of years.

To Andrew, family is everything. There are, however, three things he is passionate about - helping people, Health and Fitness and the Internet.

This has led him to writing and publishing a number of personal development and self improvement websites, blogs, ebooks and ecourses.

Maybe it's because we were both too close to "the struggle" but as hard as he tried, he couldn't get me to think more positively, get me to take action until...

I don't care if you call it "The Secret", "Law Of Attraction" or good old common sense (which is very rare!). To quote from Andrew's book...

Real success is not always about being able to reach your goal, or winning that gigantic trophy; rather, it's more of standing up after every fall and never losing hope to finish what you once started.

Really, there's no harm in trying.

The real harm is not believing in yourself - making you worthless and insignificant!

I read the ebook (see below) he published and that's when I begun to realize not just that I am blessed with my family but I too have a significant contribution to make!

The basic principle of knowing yourself is that every individual is responsible, in control and generate their own life encounters.

This is an extremely complex process that may be severely obstructed when one is unconscious of how one functions, or if one has a misunderstanding of themselves.

You therefore need to discover and improve your true person and not what others perceive you to be, and also not who you believe you must be, but the person that you truly are. How you manage your life, guide others, take charge, perform and behave in relationships really depends on how effectively you use your strengths and identify your weaknesses that you will discover when you truly know your "self".

Success is creating what you want the way you want it to be.

It is, in fact, a journey. And, like all journeys, your ship will sail through calm waters and buck in storms. If you stay on course, continually upgrading your navigational instruments and adjusting to feedback, you will reach your port of dreams.

Another name for success is mastery.

When you attain mastery over something you know what to do to get the results that you want. And you can repeat this method over and over again to ensure a stream of rewards.

Mastery is persistence over time. Those who profit from persistence appreciate ongoing self improvement and motivation. In fact, intrinsic motivation will allow you to do anything, overcome any obstacle, and surmount any hesitation. Furthermore, the more intense your motivation, the better your chances of success when you embark on any new enterprise.

Success, ultimately, is about being fully YOU!
