This lens is dedicated to inspirational and motivational messages, stories, and designs.

We all know words have great power. They can lift us up when we're feeling down and give us hope when we're overcome with despair. They can make us think and make us feel. They can encourage us when we're feeling doubt and give us strength when we need it most. Whether they make us smile or make us cry, we love to share them, and we love to read them over and over again.

Over the years, I've collected some of the stories and poems that have inspired me, and I've shared a few here. Usually they come in an e-mail, so I don't know who wrote them, but if anyone out there does know who deserves credit, please let me know.

I hope you find something here to inspire you. And I hope you share with us what has inspired you. We can always use a little inspiration.

Obstacles 

In ancient times, a king had a boulder placed on a roadway. Then he hid himself and watched to see if anyone would remove the huge rock.

Some of the king's wealthiest merchants and courtiers came by and simply walked around it. Many loudly blamed the king for not keeping the roads clear, but none did anything about getting the stone out of the way.

Then a peasant came along carrying a load of vegetables. Upon approaching the boulder, the peasant laid down his burden and tried to move the stone to the side of the road. After much pushing and straining, he finally succeeded.

After the peasant picked up his load of vegetables, he noticed a purse lying in the road where the boulder had been. The purse contained many gold coins and a note from the king indicating that the gold was for the person who removed the boulder from the roadway.

The peasant learned what many of us never understand. Every obstacle presents an opportunity to improve our condition.

I Am Thankful For... 

- the mess to clean after a party because it means I have been surrounded by friends.
- the taxes I pay because it means that I'm employed.
- the clothes that fit a little too snug because it means I have enough to eat.
- my shadow who watches me work because it means I am out in the sunshine.
- a lawn that needs mowing, windows that need cleaning and gutters that need fixing because it means I have a home.
- all the complaining I hear about our government because it means we have freedom of speech.
- the spot I find at the far end of the parking lot because it means I am capable of walking.
- my huge heating bill because it means I am warm.
- the lady behind me in church who sings off key because it means that I can hear.
- the piles of laundry and ironing because it means my loved ones are nearby.
- weariness and aching muscles at the end of the day because it means I have been productive.
- the alarm that goes off in the early morning hours because it means that I'm alive.

Words of Inspiration 

Maybe God wants us to meet a few wrong people before meeting the right one so that when we finally meet the right person, we will know how to be grateful for that gift.

When the door of happiness closes, another opens, but often times we look so long at the closed door that we don't see the one which has been opened for us.

The best kind of friend is the kind you can sit on a porch and swing with, never say a word, and then walk away feeling like it was the best conversation you've every had.

It's true that we don't know what we've got until we lose it, but it's also true that we don't know what we've been missing until it arrives.

Giving someone all your love is never an assurance that they'll love you back! Don't expect love in return; just wait for it to grow in their heart but if it doesn't, be content it grew in yours.

It takes only a minute to get a crush on someone, an hour to like someone, and a day to love someone, but it takes a lifetime to forget someone.

Don't go for looks; they can deceive. Don't go for wealth; even that fades away. Go for someone who makes you smile because it takes only a smile to make a dark day seem bright. Find the one that makes your heart smile.

There are moments in life when you miss someone so much that you just want to pick them from your dreams and hug them for real!

Dream what you want to dream; go where you want to go; be what you want to be, because you have only one life and one chance to do all the things you want to do.

May you have enough happiness to make you sweet, enough trials to make you strong, enough sorrow to keep you human, enough hope to make you happy.

Always put yourself in others' shoes. If you feel that it hurts you, it probably hurts the other person, too.

The happiest of people don't necessarily have the best of everything; they just make the most of everything that comes along their way.

Happiness lies for those who cry, those who hurt, those who have searched, and those who have tried, for only they can appreciate the importance of people who have touched their lives.

Love begins with a smile, grows with a kiss and ends with a tear. The brightest future will always be based on a forgotten past, you can't go on well in life until you let go of your past failures and heartaches.

When you were born, you were crying and everyone around you was smiling. Live your life so that when you die, you're the one who is smiling and everyone around you is crying.

The Dash 

I read of a man who stood to speak
At the funeral of a friend
He referred to the dates on her tombstone
From the beginning...to the end.
He noted that first came her date of birth
And spoke the following date with tears,
But he said what mattered most of all
Was the dash between those years.

For that dash represents all the time
That she spent alive on earth...
And now only those who loved her
Know what that little line is worth.
For it matters not, how much we own;
The cars...the house...the cash,
What matters is how we live and love
And how we spend our dash.

So think about this long and hard...
Are there things you'd like to change?
For you never know how much time is left,
That can still be rearranged.

If we could just slow down enough
To consider what's true and real,
And always try to understand
The way other people feel.
And be less quick to anger,
And show appreciation more
And love the people in our lives
Like we've never loved before.
If we treat each other with respect,
And more often wear a smile..
Remembering that this special dash
May last only a little while.

So, when your eulogy's being read
With your life's actions to rehash...
Would you be proud of the things they say
About how you spent your dash?

Creative Marketing 

A fellow who just had opened a restaurant in Chicago wanted to make sure people knew about his restaurant to be able to get referrals. What to do with a very small marketing budget?

He decided to take a cab ride each day. Yes, he hailed a cab outside his restaurant and went around the block, talking to the cabby about his place the whole time! At the end of the trip he gave him a $5 tip and said if he was ever in the area, to come in and have lunch on him. He did this for 12 months, by which time the cabs were parked three deep in front of his place. All the cabbies in Chicago knew about his place and they were recommending it to all the customers who asked "Where is a good place to eat around here"?

What this fellow did was targeted one-on-one marketing. He had someone's undivided attention and pitched him and left him wanting to try the place. Once these people came in, bingo, the ball started rolling. It is a very creative gutsy solution. We all need to come up with our own creative piece that we feel comfortable doing.
