Installing an invisible, electric, in-ground dog/pet fence
This is my boy Ralph, and I have installed an invisible, electric, in-ground dog/pet fence to keep him safe from harm and I will help you do so as well. There are a lot of myths about these invisible fences and I want to put your mind at ease. Installation is fairly easy and soon both you and your pet will enjoy the benefits of a new invisible, electric dog fence. Imagine the freedom that both of you shall share. Your pet will be able to spend hours outside and unattended, enjoying your yard and more importantly your pet will not need to be chained or left in some unsightly pen. I also want to mention that these fences, additionally, will work with cats and even farm animals! How do I know? I've installed, trained and serviced invisible, electric, in-ground, dog/pet fences as an occupation and had tremendous success.
The Myths About Electric Pet Fences
Let's sort out some facts.
Myth #1: I need a professional to install my in-ground pet fence.Fact: You simply need the materials, a shovel (or spade), a drill, and some very basic know-how.
Myth #2: It will hurt my dog/pet.
Fact: If you properly train your pet, any if not all pain can be minimized or eliminated.
--Also, consider the alternative: hit by a car, running away, stolen, or getting picked up by the folks with animal control.
Myth #3: The systems are too expensive.
Fact: Although they are not cheap, you can have your pet contained with an electric, in-ground, invisible dog fence for less than $300.00, in some cases much less.
Myth #4: My dog is too stubborn, it won't work with him/her.
Fact: Again, I've personally trained all breeds and temperaments of pets, even a goat...it worked for them all! It will work, if you put in the effort to follow the training steps and spend a fair amount of time with your pet for the first 2-4 weeks. Note: if your dog is overly aggressive and has had a history of attacking-or bitting other pets or people, then you may want to use this as a back up, along with a traditional fence. **You just don't want to take the chance**
Myth #5: My pet or I will get shocked if it rains.
Fact: This is not true, first the current output is incredibly minimal and secondly, it doesn't send electricity through the air, it sends a signal. The collar/receiver delivers the correction, not the wire itself.
Myth #6: If I have, or someone that I know has a pacemaker, it will interfere with it.
Fact: Some units may cause complications, so be sure to contact the manufacturer directly if this may be a concern. I know from experience that there are models that are 100% safe.
Myth #7: It's inhumane to use an electric collar.
Fact: The correction can be uncomfortable, this is true, but when properly trained your pet will only experience the correction a couple of times and in some cases-not at all. Consider how inhumane it is to leave your pet inside all day, or to let it out on a chain, because your afraid that she'll run off, or be hit by a car. Your pet will learn to understand and respect its boundaries very quickly.
Important!
You Can Do It!
You can install your own invisible, electric, in-ground dog/pet fence and you can train your pet to use it properly!
Installing your electric, in-ground, invisible fence
Let's get started!
To begin, I want to mention that it is not necessary to purchase the most expensive unit on the shelf. While it is true that some have extra bells and whistles that can be convenient; most of them will produce good results with proper training. With hundreds of different makes and models available check my list of links for my top choices. Additionally, I have another Squidoo page that outlines the training process, Training your dog/pet to use an invisible, electric, in-ground fence.
The first thing that you will want to do, is draw a rough sketch of your yard and the area that you wish to utilize as a boundary for your pet fence. Note: you should allow for a 3-5 foot field on the inside of where your wire will be laid. If you have a very small containment area, don't despair, you will just need to do a little extra training.
Next, you have a couple of options for wire placement. You can either bury it at 2-4 inches below the surface, by opening a small crease along the boundary area with a shovel. Or, if you already have an existing fence and you are reinforcing it with the electric fence you can staple it to wood, or weave it through chain-link. Just be sure to keep it near ground level and be sure that the wire is UV resistant, so that the sun doesn't deteriorate the protective shielding after a couple of years. **Important** You will need to use either a tone generator to check for the location of your telephone and cable lines, or dig very carefully in the suspected areas. Check out this lens:Maintaining your invisible, electric, in-ground dog/pet fence.
Once the outer perimeter is laid, you will need to twist two wires together (this negates the field, note: some systems come with twisted wire included.)
Your dog/pet will be able to cross over the twisted wire without being corrected. Your twisted wire will go from the outer parameter, into wherever it is that you decide to house the system. This can be in a garage, in the house, in the basement, or if you have an outdoor, protected outlet--you can install it there. It will be necessary to make some splices in the wire, so you will need wire nuts that are water-weather resistant, again you will find these in my links. When ordering the wire nuts, you will want to purchase a couple extra, because over time, you will invariably have some wire breaks. Check maintaining your fence.
Keeping your pet from going into a flower garden, bird bath, or hedges is a fairly simple task as well. You will only need lay a perimeter wire around the object or objects that you wish to protect and then connect this new loop to the main perimeter loop with a twisted wire.
Hooking up the system is fairly straight forward and detailed in the manual that you will receive with your system as are some of the other processes involved. One other thing to note: lightning can damage your system, so I would suggest either connecting your ground to your home's grounding rod, adding and additional rod at least 3-4 feet deep, or at least purchasing a lightning protection device that plugs into the wall outlet--which the transmitter will then plug into. You will find this item in the link list as well.
I realize that this may sound like a very involved process, but rest assured, the most difficult process is simply putting the line in the ground. If you are not afraid to get your hands dirty and if you are willing to put in a little time, your system should be installed within 1-2 days--I can install a system in 3-4 hours. Once the system is wired in, you will be ready to train your dog/pet.

Isn't your pet's freedom worth it?
Obedience Issues?
If you are having obedience problems with your dog, for example: they leave you dirty little presents around the house, they don't come, will not stay off of the counters, intimidate the neighbors, or just give you that eye at dinner time, then I would highly suggest that you take a look at Sit Stay Fetch.
If you are having similar problems with your cat, my suggestion would be to check out Complete Cat Training.
Both of these books are excellent resources and both come heavily recommended as you will see when you click on them.
