Instant Mobile Sites

Ranked #4,829 in Internet, #255,575 overall

Why does my business need a mobile site?

Most websites look terrible on mobile devices such as smart phones, which is bad for businesses that must appeal to customers who are on the move and looking for local restaurants, small retailers, car dealers and beauty salons.

Really mobile customers typically want something right now and need to quickly find out more about a local company's products or services, current special offers, opening times or exact address. The problem is that regular websites are not designed for small screens, navigation without a mouse, or loading quickly on a wireless network. This means that a regular website will not help these customers get the information they need easily, forcing them to search where they'll potentially find competitors websites first.

Interesting Mobile Marketing Stats

According to Mobile Marketer Daily
  • Google owns 97% of searches performed on mobile devices (Mobile Marketer Daily)
  • In the last year (to early 2011), "Searches on smartphones and tablets have increased by four times in the last year alone" (Google)
  • When marketers run mobile specific ad campaigns they experience an increase in click through rates of 11.5% (Google)
  • 79 percent of Google's large advertisers don't have mobile-optimized landing pages (Google)
  • Advertisers need to consider a different approach with mobile search, as consumers tend to act immediately and impulsively while on the go. (Microsoft)

The Two Big Rules for better mobile websites

Make your content useful - avoid the marketing fluffThere are only two big rules you need to follow to publish a better smartphone-friendly website and that customers and visitors actually want to use.

  1. deliver pages that are easy to use on a small screen

  2. provide the information visitors actually need

Most people forget one of these rules. And admittedly, there are many smaller 'guidelines' it is useful to follow as well. But it always helps to start small!

To learn more about the two big rules, read the free eBook (and receive the other eBooks in the series for free too), which expands on these rules so you can understand how they work for mobile visitors who reach your mobile site from a search, from pay-per-click advertising, or while they are browsing (yes, bored people sit and play with their iPhone's too!).

There are obviously many reasons why, and many ways how to publish a great mobile website. Its my belief that technology should not be a barrier to doing so.

Don't lose customers

Are you worried that potential customers are going to competitors because they can't find your business when they are on the move? When you get your own mobile website you can stop worrying as they can find you right now.

Most regular websites just don't work

Many people believe that a regular website is sufficient for smartphones such as iPhone, Android and Blackberry. True, but only if you want your customers to zoom and squint to find the information they need.

Mobile Sites don't just look different, they are different

Clear and simple. How it should be.Some companies believe that you can just take your current website and reorganize the pages a little for a mobile device. There are online services that offer to convert your website automatically. They take all the menus, boxes and text, and organize them as a vertical stack of blocks. In our own tests we were initially quite impressed. But when we actually tried to find the useful information on the pages, it was hidden in a mass of unnecessary icons and unusable menus.

Observing the way smartphone users work with websites, we have learned that in great mobile websites:

Important information must appear first
People use mobile devices when they are on the go. They need information, not marketing fluff.

No Flash banners
They just don't work.

Split it up into microsites
Break your site up. Nobody is going to browse it all, so make the navigation easier to use.

Use QR Codes
If you want visitors to get more value from printed advertising, don't make them type the URL.

A call to action your visitors can act on
Marketing 101 maybe, but it is even more important for mobile websites.

Follow these guidelines and visitors will be drawn in to the simple to use pages, and find the information they need easily.

Review of Consected Instant Mobile Sites

Consected Instant Mobile Sites

It is incredibly easy to produce a mobile website. There are many services advertised on the Internet to help companies convert regular websites to 'mobilized' versions. The problem is that these conversion services miss the mark. They reorganize all the regular blocks on the page to a version that smartphone users can see and click, but they don't help actually make the website useful or provide the information the visitor needs. A mobile visitor in a hurry will soon just quit looking at the automatically mobilized website and go back to the Google search results. This is an expensive waste of pay-per-click advertising and search engine optimization (SEO), just to send mobile users to a site that is hard to use. It is far better to spend a few minutes more making your web pages useful for end users.
