A Step-By-Step Instructions To Build a Bed Platform

First of all, decide on the features of a bed platform you desire to build. You need to include the following factors before you start building it:

- Are you going to attach a headboard and/or footboard?
- Are you going to install a rim around the edge to keep the mattress from sliding?
- Are you going to need a more flexible bed or a very firm bed which capable of supporting more weight?

It is important to consider all those factors before you even begin to consider to start. Sketch your design carefully. As you sketch, you'll find your end goal of how does the bed platform is going to look like. In this stage, you can choose to plan on your own or purchase your own plan. It is recommended to get a professional woodworking to do so. You can get a cheap professional plan here.

After you have determine the size of your bed platform, measure the length and width of the mattress you want to use. Add 4 more inches to the length. As for the width, it will depend on whether you are using rim or not. If you do, add the width of the rim to the width of the mattress.

In your plan you will already have decided the finished height of the bed including mattress. If you subtract the thickness of the mattress against the finished height, the measurement is the height of the platform. Don't forget to consider your headboard and foot-board too.

Also inside your plan you must already decide what kind of material that you will need. A plywood will be a good option because it is cost effective and provides more flexibility. IF you decided to use particleboard, also can be consider as a good value but it is stiffer. If you are confused or not sure, consult your purchased plan for the suggested materials.

Have your materials cut and ready. The length of the side supports equals the measurement for the length of the platform bed.

After you have already build a platform bed frame, sand the wood by using sandpaper coarse first and the using the fine one. If possible, to sand the wood in the direction of the grain. Make sure you stain or seal the wood before you assemble those wood. After the platform bed you build is put together, you can go over any raw wood with a cloth coated with stain or sealant.

And finally, assemble your platform bed where you want it to be located. You will be building a box to support the mattress. Remember to attach your headboard and/or foot-board. It is advisable to use 2 sets of L-brackets at each attachment to avoid shifting which could damage your headboard or foot-board.
