Thank you Rebecca for this great resource. I'm a Dad and I'm currently helping my two young daughters with their maths homework. You would have thought I'd be an old hand at this having already seen my son through senior school and the fact that I'm an accountant! But the truth is that at times I find it difficult to explain the concepts in a way that they would understand.

All the basic principles should be made understood to the students. They can get their complete support from the online tutors in order to become experts in their subjects.

    Hi,

I thought you may be interested in a product I created. It's a simple ruler, called the ZeroSum ruler, that helps kids add integers of different signs.

I teach 11th grade Advanced Algebra and the #1 problem my kids still have is with this concept of adding integers of opposite signs. I will get "-27" as often as I get the correct answer to "-22 + 5". The problem only gets worse when students are asked to solve for x in "x + 22 = 5" or for y in "y + 22x = 5x + 7".

I developed the ZeroSum ruler after thinking about the way we add integers of opposite signs versus the way we are taught them in school. If we owed someone $10 and paid $7 back, we'd cout up from 7 to get to 10. In school, kids are told to find -10 and count "-9, -8, -7..." to see what number they land on. There's a discrepancy here that I want to close.

I have a blog at http://zerosumruler.wordpress.com/ that I hoped you might check out!

Great stuff. I think Capt'n Smite might have used some of this information when composing the clues to his treasure map. http://www.squidoo.com/Pirate-Treasure

I've always known you were uber-smart and utterly dedicated to your profession and your students, but I don't think I ever understood HOW much so you are until you created this lens and the supporting YouTube videos. I just love that you took action to create the tools you wanted for your students.
