What is an Ultrabook?

2012 Ultrabook Features and Specifications

Intel UltrabooksAn ultrabook is a smaller-sized and slimmer laptop computer which weighs less, yet has fast processing speeds, longer battery life, uses less power, and is ultraportable, compared to a traditional laptop.

In 2010 and 2011, we saw the rise and popularity of tablet computers because of their overall functionality and portability. However, tablets don't replace laptops, at least at the present time, and traditional laptops though portable, are still on the bulkier side.

In 2008, Apple introduced the MacBook Air which has been very popular with Mac fans and has produced an appetite for slimmer and more portable laptops, for Windows PC fans. At the CES 2012, many PC makers introduced their ultrabooks some of which are already available and many newer models are set to be launched later in 2012.

Most of the current ultrabooks have screen sizes between 11 to 13 inches, weigh around 3 pounds, and are about 17 mm thin. Battery life for most ultrabooks is around 5 to 7 hours, though some models can last longer. These new ultrabooks are powered by second generation Intel Core i5 and i7 processors.

In terms of memory storage, most of the ultrabooks use SSD (Solid State Drives) or hybrids (i.e. combination of HDD and SSD) for faster start-up and processing speeds. And in terms of RAM, most base ultrabooks come with 4 GB DDR3 RAM.

Let's take a closer look at the top ultrabooks available in 2012. The ultrabooks covered below are mostly base models, however, each PC maker has various other higher end models which have more enhanced features, specifications, and cost more. Watch the short video below to take a peek at the key features of ultrabooks.

Acer Ultrabooks 2012

Acer Aspire Ultrabook

The Acer Aspire S3 Ultrabook is comparable to the MacBook Air when comparing specifications like the Core i5 Intel processor, 4GB RAM, HD webcam, wireless connectivity, size and weight. However, the Acer Aspire S3 falls a little short in terms of screen resolution when compared to the MacBook Air, though both have a 13.3 inch LED backlit screen. The Aspire S3 does not have a backlit keyboard, and the battery life is less than that of the MacBook Air, as you can see from the above chart.

On the other hand, the base model of the Aspire S3 has a hybrid hard drive which comprises of a standard 320 GB HDD and 20 GB SSD for fast start-up as compared to the 128 GB flash memory of the MacBook Air. Also, the Aspire S3 has two USB 2.0 and one HDMI port, as opposed to the one USB 2.0 port of the MacBook Air.

Finally, in terms of price, you can get an Acer Aspire S3 for $800 as compared to $1,300 for a similar MacBook Air. Acer is scheduled to release higher-end models of Aspire ultrabooks later in 2012 with the new Intel Ivy Bridge processors, higher RAM, full SSD storage drives, and improved battery life.

Toshiba Ultrabooks 2012

Toshiba Portege Z835 Ultrabook

Toshiba introduced the Protégé Z835 Ultrabook in November 2011 with some of the key specifications as shown in the above chart. When compared to the MacBook Air some of the features of the Protégé Z835 Ultrabook are comparable like the Core i5 Intel processor, 128 GB SSD storage, HD webcam, full-sized backlit keyboard, and the availability of the full-sized SD card reader slot.

Some features in the Toshiba ultrabook that outdo the MacBook Air are 6 GB of DDR3 RAM (expandable to 8 GB), the USB 3.0 and HDMI ports, 8 hour battery life, and the overall dimensions and weight of the ultrabook. The only advantage of the MacBook Air that I could find over the Protégé Z835 Ultrabook featured above, is the resolution of the 13.3 inch LED-backlit display (1366 x 768 vs 1440 x 900). Having said so, aesthetically speaking, the Toshiba ultrabook is not comparable to the sleek-looking and well-designed MacBook Air.

Toshiba has another variation of the Protégé Z835 (see Amazon section below) with an Core i3 processor and 4 GB of DDR3 RAM (expandable to 6 GB) costing around $900. The short video below provides more details on this Toshiba ultrabook model.
