An interactive notebook is similar to a lapbook, but it is ongoing like a notebook. Basically an interactive notebook is a lapbook in a binder! An interactive notebook can be used for science, history, State Studies, Country Studies, Picture Books, People in History or whatever you can think of!

Dinah Zike Books

Books by Dinah Zike are awesome to use for interactive notebooking. Click the picture if you want to learn more about the book or if you want to by it.

Materials you'll need for an interactive notebook-

books about subject
3- ring binder (or a thick weight wire bound artist sketchbook)
card stock (skip this if you use the sketchbook)
(a lined theme book or composition book can be used also)
3- hole puncher
lapbook templates and booklets
glue
pencil
coloring supplies (crayons, color pencils, markers)
embellishments (colored paper, patterned paper, stickers, die cut, magazine pictures)

Step 1 of the interactive notebook:

Take several (about 15- 30) sheets of card stock (I usually use white but you can use colored) and 3- hole punch them on the left side. Put the card stock in the binder. (Start here if you are using the sketchbook, theme book or composition book) Decorate the first page of card stock (only the top) to reflect the theme of the notebook whether it is for science, history, picture books or whatever.

Step 2 of the interactive notebook:

Now you're ready for your study. As your studying each subject do enough lapbook type booklets or templates to fill up a two page spread. In other words, when the interactive notebook is open to the page both the left side and right side of the open area will have the same sub category, then when you turn the page it will be about another subcategory. Example: If you are doing a science notebook the first 2 page spread many be over the solar system. It might have a booklet attached about the Sun, then one about the planets, one about Comets and a booklet about asteroids. Then the next two page spread may be about volcanoes. One that page you may have a map of the ring of fire, booklet on the types of volcanoes and a booklet about pumice stone. Make sure you wait until you are done with a study, before you glue down the booklets. You can store the booklets in a freezer bag until they are ready to attach to the page. Remember each 2 page spread of the interactive notebook reflects a study.

Step 3 of the interactive notebook:

After you put the have arranged the booklets in the interactive notebook, you can add embellishments to make certain things stand out. Pictures are good illustrators. Just remember this is an on going project that will take weeks or months as you study more subjects.

Lynn, thanks for this! As I mentioned on your blog, I've started using these more with the 1st grader, but it's always great to be reminded of the many creative ways to learn, and your lens is very straightforward.
