My Favorite "Interesting" Chinese Ads. # 1 - 5

Ranked #14,079 in Entertainment, #172,367 overall

The Cream Of Chinese Advertising

While advertising has come a long way in the Orient since street advertising - with its garish colors and smiling faces - their TV ads. still have a unique flavor - that makes them quite distinctive from other Asian markets such as Thailand or Japan.

Unfortunately, I have to plead ignorance as to their exact place of origin, as I really can't be sure whether these ads. are from Singapore, Taiwan, Hong Kong or even mainland China - I don't have the language skills - so, if anyone does, please feel free to drop me a line or visit the guest book and I'll update the videos [I also peruse the Youtube's comments for hints about the place of origin].

Nevertheless, whatever country they're from, these commercials provide a wonderful insight into that part of the world, including a bawdiness that I didn't expect. I hope you enjoy them.

#1: Up Up Bras

despite the nomenclature, this bra commercial isn't "Jap"

This bra commercial is so cute and coy, it's almost ridiculous!

Up! Up!

"The business people speak Japanese but the main part of the commercial is in Chinese." Youtube member frechieguy

I've also included a second bra ad, which is somehow cute, romantic and suggestive, all at the same time. I don't know where it originates from but I suspect that it's Hong Kong:

La Brassiere

a huge success in Hong Kong

La Brassiere is a Hong Kong English language, romantic comedy (with a French title) about the Asian undergarment industry.

Bizarre!

It stars Lau Ching-Wan Winner, who won Best Actor, 8th Annual Hong Kong Film Critics Society Awards for his performance in the movie.

"La Brassiere is a romantic comedy made in Hong Kong. It was so popular after the release that it went on to become a franchised series including Mighty Baby & Driving Miss Wealthy." Top 500 reviewer Tsuyoshi

"It's about a bra company that decides to hire a couple of men to gain a new perspective over an all-female work force. The men are fish out of water and it's just a cute comedy. It's worth watching." Amazon reviewer M. Armstrong

# 2: Rejoice Shampoo

from Taiwan, I'm led to believe

This commercial started off so romantically that my Danger! Chick-flick meter was looking like it would disintegrate from the tension. Luckily, the punchline saved me from a cruel fate - which is that the girl's hair is now so smooth that the guy's hands slipped onto her boobs.

Great excuse, I'll have to remember that one!

Hairspray: The Broadway Musical - Now A Movie

Shampoo - Hairspray. Get the connection?

It's 1962, and change is in the air in Baltimore. Tracy Turnblad, a big girl with big hair and an even bigger heart, has only one passion - to dance. She wins a spot on the local TV dance program, "The Corny Collins Show" and is transformed overnight from outsider to irrepressible teen celebrity.

But can the trendsetting Tracy win the heart of teen-dream Link Larkin and stand up for what she believes in, despite the program's scheming stage manager? All she needs is her best friend Penny, a toe- tappin' beat - and a little HAIRSPRAY!

"If you like Grease, you'll like this, guaranteed. The songs are every bit as catchy, and were written specifically for this show - I dare you not to be humming at least one of them for a week." Amazon customer K. Laurey

"The real kicker here though are the performances of John Travolta (yes, that John Travolta) as the over-sized mother, Edna, who can still dance up a storm...Christopher Walken as the supportive and skinny dad, Wilbur, and...[the]always femme fatale Michelle Pfeiffer..." Amazon customer Alfred Johnson

"I saw this film at the theater the night it opened. I had never seen the Broadway show, nor had I ever heard the soundtrack. The movie was sold out, and at the exact second the closing credits hit the screen the crowd broke out in a thundering applause. I don't remember the last time that happened at a movie theater" Amazon customer Matt P. Swintek

# 3: Gatsby Hair Gel

you've gotta keep watching until the end!

Gatsby Hair Products are sold throughout the East and this commercial (I believe it's from Hong Kong) stars Masahiro Motoki a former member of Japanese boy band Shibugaki Tai and now a Japanese Academy Award-winning actor.

"I'm not good at English but I'll try to translate:

'Let's go through life styling hair
LA-LA-LA it's a wonderful life!
Gatsby, Gatsby, Gatsby, Gatsby
Let's go through life styling hair
Enjoy your life as much as you can, then
Good-bye World!
Gatsby, Gatsby, Gatsby, Gatsby...
...Like this?'"
Youtube member endlag3

"Is it wrong if I randomly break out in dance and sing the song? LOL " Youtube member yumigoto

"My friend just mailed me a canister of Gatsby Mat Type Styling Wax. Honestly, it is hands down the BEST hair product for styling straight hair. The stuff is great." Youtube member moyang13

# 4: Yellow Pages

from Hong Kong

Yes, this Yellow pages does seem a little scatological - but it is quite funny. It certainly wouldn't be out of place in many a U.S. teen movie.

As a bonus, I've provided another video which is - I think - not a commercial, at all, but a comedy sketch "advertisement" for a board game called "Kill Your Family".

# 5: Green Plum Tea (I think)

from Taiwan

This commercial, tarring Taiwanese pop star, Rainie Yang is a little strange, almost surreal. Researching Rainie, I discovered a blogger who was at the shoot, who wrote:

"The day before yesterday, Rainie Yang was in Neihu filming for a plum green tea commercial. For 50 million NT [New Taiwan Dollars - so, by my reckoning, Ms. Yang earned U.S. $1.5 million], she sat on a 12 stories high water tower without any safety measures, giving it all she's got in acting, hugging and kissing a big plum prop. She wasn't afraid of the height, only afraid that she will become human jerky under the scorching sun."

"She got high on that drink -making her see apples - I want some of that..."
Youtube member katanaiko

"They're not apples - [they're] these weird plum things. I'm not really a fan of 'em but a lot of people in Taiwan are." Youtube member MoleSnyper

"I have that tea at my house. It's not very good but the commercial makes me wanna drink it. LOL" Youtube member renabanena

"The best Kung Fu cooking comedy ever made!"
Amazon reviewer Brian Bowhay

"The Chinese Feast is like a 12-course banquet dinner which serves up a little something for every taste. Director Tsui Hark, best known for crafting elaborate wire-fu epics throughout the 1990's, blends together slapstick comedy, martial arts, sports flick conventions and even the Iron Chef TV series into one tasty fusion cuisine."
Amazon reviewer Sur-reel Life

"The movie really is a great deal of fun..[but] the English subtitles were written by someone who may not have had the greatest command of the English language."

"[The Joys Of Engrish] has the funniest, cutest and most bizarre examples of poorly chosen or poorly translated English phrases that work their way onto shirts, bags, hats and jackets in eastern Asia (particularly Japan)."
Amazon reviewer Kathryn B.

"You cannot help but "awwww" at some of the cuter phrases and signs and be shocked at the allusions of some of the faux pas phrases that have obviously gone undetected by the English censors.
Amazon reviewer Like Sloane

"Humor occurs - Engrish is catchy and thoughtful. Buy the book: you always happy when Engrish is."
Amazon reviewer John L. Russell

"Kung Fu Hustle is a film of martial arts mastery, high energy comedy, the twists of the human condition and certainly a statement of the Haves and Have-nots. Just a wild ride, Escapism in its truest form."
Amazon reviewer Cathe Jones

"Make no mistake about it the movie is absolute perfection. Humor, action, Kung Fu, even a little drama thrown in - this movie is incredible."
Amazon reviewer Jack
