Getting Started

Just reading this means that you are off to a good start. Here are some items to consider before you actually begin to decorate with wall hangings.

1 - Getting to know the customers' needs
2 - Decide on which areas to decorate
3 - Start new or upgrade
4 - Choose a theme for the entire house
5 - Choose a sub theme for each room
6 - Do it yourself or contract

1) Not only getting to know the people that will reside in the decorated area, but to a lesser extent, those who will frequent the area is of extreme importance. Make an attempt not to offend those who will be viewing your creation, but yet, it must remain appealing to you. If you are decorating the area yourself, you already know what your likes and dislikes are. If you are contracting out to a professional, it is important to let the agent know what kind, in general, of themes would appeal to you. Most reputable agents will have a catalog for you to browse through.

2) Are you going to decorate one room, i.e. living room, or the whole house? Maybe you just want to hang a single picture on a blank wall. Size up the job that needs to be done. In each area, measure the maximum and minimum sizes that will accommodate the space. Use cardboard cutouts to visualize the effect. Keep in mind that the best viewing for most hangings is to center it at eye level. There are many exceptions to this, especially when surroundings would make it difficult or awkward.

3) If you are only hanging a single item, then you are upgrading. When hanging multiple items or even a whole room, it may be best to renew the theme for the room or entire house.

4) When choosing themes for an entire house, think broadly. For instance, if you want a seashore theme; take that theme and break it down into its individual components. A way to break down seashore would be to have sub components such as, fish, shells, boating, fishing piers and docks, beaches and coasts, you get the idea. Each one of the sub components could be used in a different room. All rooms would be different, yet have a connection to each other.

5) When choosing a theme for an individual room, most components must somehow relate to that theme. In other words, you don't want a seashell theme with a picture of cowboy boots. That is unless you are weird. The room itself may or may not relate to the rest of the house. A private or semi-private room can easily accommodate its own theme. Else wise, a foyer with a large entrance way into the living room should each fall into the same broad theme.

6) Deciding to use your own decorating ideas or hire a decorating consultant depends upon your creative talents and your budget. If you choose to hire a consultant, be sure to give the agent as many of your ideas as you can and then discuss with them what alternatives there are.

One final note, it is becoming more popular to decorate with themes that follow the seasons and holidays. With the changing seasons and/or holidays, the wall hangings are changed to accommodate these calendar changes. Doing so keeps a room or entire house looking new and fresh with each change.
