Have you ever wondered what it would be like to have an interior design career? The design industry is rapidly growing and is looking for new, innovative talent. Harrington College of Design in Chicago offers an Associate of Applied Science and a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Interior Design degrees. Are you curious as to what a designer's daily responsibilities entail?

Here is a typical day in the life of a commercial interior designer:

  • 8:28 a.m. Arrive at the office. Check email and phone messages.
  • 9:30 a.m. Attend construction meeting for a current project -- redesigning the offices of an important downtown law firm. Consult with architects and other team members and answer design questions. Listen to progress report of building.
  • 12:17 p.m. Grab a quick bite at the corner deli, then head back to check emails and phone messages left during meeting. Return calls regarding orders and requests for meetings. Send message to carpet supplier, checking on delivery date of order. The installation date is only a month away and the carpet still hasn't been shipped from overseas - very nerve-wracking!
  • 1:58 p.m. Spend time in the sample library, pulling together finish samples and product ideas for a new project - a doctor's office in Evanston. Keep in mind that all the finishes and fabrics must be able to withstand wear and tear. Colors should be neutral and soothing.
  • 4:00 p.m. Gather team members who will be working on the new project to discuss responsibilities and deadlines.
  • 5:30 p.m. Technically, time to go home, but there is still a stack of orders to be reviewed and emails to return.
  • 6:59 p.m. Emails returned, orders processed, time to head home!

The typical day in the life of a commercial interior designer looks really appealing to me. I would consider to go for this career, especially that you deal with new things every day / project.
