There will definitely be pride in being able to help other people achieve their desired level of fitness. You are not only making them look physically beautiful. You are also helping them achieve a healthier disposition.
This, however, can get demanding, as there will be many skills and knowledge that have to be developed. You must know the nutrient contents of various foods so that you can properly incorporate this to the required diet of your client.
It is also a must to know the right workouts and physical trainings that will help the condition of your client.
It may even be more productive to know the latest trends in workouts and diet plans so you can properly apprise your client on what kind of scheme they should stick to.
This is also more than just a delivery of technical knowledge. Being a fitness trainer will also entail constant communication with clients. You must be able to influence and encourage them to further improve their condition.
You also need to make sure you or your clients have appropriate workout areas set up ready for your routines.

Requirements For Fitness Trainer Certification

- most organizations will set the age limit for their certified trainers at around 18 or 21, and will require, at the least, a high school degree.
Not every group requires college degrees, though some of the stricter ones require college degrees in sports sciences even for basic fitness trainer positions. If you're applying for advanced trainer courses though, such college degrees are a hard prerequisite.
First Aid Training, Especially CPR
- knowledge of first aid is a must, and the minimum requirement you can expect to see in most organizations is a certification from taking at least CPR course.
These certificates must be at least 1 year up to date, and old or expired certificates are not accepted. Some certification courses require full first aid training, right down to splinting broken bones and dealing with shock and trauma.
This is more commonly needed in fitness trainers for sports therapy related fields. We will be discussing first aid in depth in an upcoming chapter.
Basic Knowledge of Anatomy
- a basic knowledge of the parts of the human body is a must. The tests for fitness trainer certification don't simply deal with muscle groups, but also include knowledge of the cardiovascular, respiratory, and nervous systems, as these are all integral to fitness and health training.
Basic Knowledge of Cardiovascular Exercise
- one of the basics of fitness training is cardiovascular work. The certification tests will determine if you have the necessary knowledge of the drills and exercises required to bring overweight and out-of-shape people back up to speed in terms of their endurance and wind.
Having some basic training in jogging/running and aerobics will usually be enough to fill this bill.
Basic Knowledge of Resistance Training
- this is another field of study that's basic knowledge for any fitness trainer. Working with weights and isometric machines is a necessary part of any fitness trainer's regimen.
You need to know not only how to pump iron, but how to do so safely, including knowledge of how to work solo, with a spotter, using free weights, resistance machines, and the like.
Basic Knowledge in Nutrition and Sports Nutrition
- these two areas of knowledge are important in fitness and health. You have to be able to determine the dietary habits of your clients and recommend necessary changes to keep them fit.
Some organizations require that you know only one of the two, but the stricter ones require that you know both the dietary requirements for basic fitness as well as the ones for higher end dedicated athletes.
Basic Certification (for advanced courses)
- advanced trainer courses will require that you already have passed the basic fitness trainer requirements above, and have a certificate for them. Advanced courses will often have their own fields of specialty, kind of like the difference between a heart or brain surgeon as opposed to a general medical practitioner, and they will train you in those specialized fields, like certification as a yoga instructor or children's sports and fitness instructors.
Specialized Knowledge (for advanced courses)
- as stated above, advanced courses usually focus on a specialized field of study. While they often teach most of the necessary skills during the certification course, some fields will actually require that you have at least a passing knowledge of other areas of study related to the chosen course. For example, an advanced fitness trainer in basketball sports science must, of course, already know the nuances of the game intimately.
Prior Work Experience (for advanced courses)
- lastly, advanced fitness trainer course certification requires at least 1 year's experience working as a certified basic fitness instructor. Some organizations actually require 2 or even 3 years experience first, depending on the estimated complexity and difficulty level of the advanced course you're applying for.
How To Market Your Personal Fitness Trainer Business
Given the big role that a fitness trainer plays in reviving a good and healthy body in their clients, the fitness business will definitely be a productive venture.Here are some points to take into account to best market the fitness business.
1. Know Your Target Market
As a fitness trainer, you must know your target market. This market would necessarily include the athletes, young professionals and people who need to get in shape.
There is also a demand among patients who have been advised by physicians to get into a good shape, particularly people with diabetes and high blood pressure problems.
Knowing the target market will save you a lot of time and energy in searching for your regular clients.
2. Set Up a Web Site
Coming up with your own web site can very well provide sufficient presence for you for clients who rely to online options. It is good if they find you when they do a search.
This is also a good venue for you to do an online business. You can be an online fitness trainer and even come up with this as your home-based business.
3. Local Health Centers
It will be helpful to coordinate with the local fitness centers and health clubs. You can ask them to post your contact information for possible interested clients.

Another way to attract people is to prove your credential through valid certifications.
There are reputable associations that will strengthen your claim to being a capable fitness trainer like the NSCA or National Strength and Conditioning Association or the ACSM or American College of Sports Medicine.
5. Give Your Exercise Philosophy
It also helps to be able to show your training philosophy to your market. This does not need to be a comprehensive explanation. All you need is to give the clients a general overview of your plans and what you can do for a particular condition.
You can provide a sample fitness program and meal plans to give a clearer illustration of your philosophy. Be open also to the questions of your clients.

You also need to have a workout studio area that your clients can use, or your clients can set up their own home gym with your help.

Inexpensive ways to set up and equip your workout Studio

Now, who says exercise equipment is only available at the gym?
Begin with whatever you have on hand. Make an inventory of the things that you have at home that could pass as exercise equipment? A bag of potatoes maybe? How about your dining chairs? Believe me, you can trim down using those!
Let's begin with that bag (or sack!) of potatoes. Carrying them from one part of your home to another would mean calories burned. A bag of sugar would do the same miracle. Who says you will ever need 'weights' again? 'Funny you never thought of those 5-10 pound bags before, huh?
Now we go to that dining chair. Take two chairs and have them face each other. They will do as equipment for the 'chair dips'. They should be at least 3 feet apart. Sit on one of the chairs with your palms turned downwards.
Tightly hold the chair as you place your heels on the other chair. Then, slowly do a forward slide and keep that position (making sure that the triceps are the ones working). Do some reps.
How about the ever-reliable desk? You can use this to aid your exercise by moving it away from the wall. At about 5 to 6 feet away from the wall, lean the back of your feet against the wall and do a push-up like exercise. Do as many as you can.
What about the wall? Your walls can do miracles for you, too. With your back against it (making sure that you are about 2 feet away from it), slowly slide downwards until a 90-degree angle is formed with your knees. Hold that position for as long as you can. Skiers would definitely benefit from this easy exercise.
If you are just on a tight budget but would want more than a bag of potatoes, then wrist and ankle weights could be used at home (or while grocery shopping), too.
The theory on these types of exercise accessories is that, the more weight you add for your muscles to work on, the more your muscles becomes stronger. Averaging just a kilo each, these are perfect to use at home while doing household chores.
What about exercise balls? This is an inexpensive exercise gear. There can be many purposes for the exercise ball. It can be used as a chair at home (this is a good way to align the spine as compared to a regular chair). Begin exercising use the ball by simply sitting 30 minutes straight.
Beyond that, you can increase the time to lengthen the spine exercise. After achieving the seated exercise, you can begin adding movements such as bouncing while seated.
The good news? The exercise ball is good for pregnant women, too! They can use it as a chair while doing rhythmic bouncing during labor.
Hand weights can be made from filling empty drink bottles with water or sand. You can adjust the weight of each one simply by topping up the bottles.
Another way to straighten that back is to use a mat in sitting instead of a bench where there is a ready back support. Sitting on a mat while exercising would make sitting straight a habit for you. So forget the bench and start going down on the floor!
If you would really like to have the 'real thing' at home yet are on a constricted budget, then garage sales for old or used gym equipment is the option for you.
There are several websites that offer second-hand apparatus (treadmills, stationary bikes, step machines, cross country ski machines, resistance equipment, name it and they've got it!).
One such website is MySimon.com. Buying is not the only thing you can do in a website such as this. You can also sell your bulky equipment when you're fed up with using it. You can also trade your old and unwanted (or overly bulky) exercise equipment.
